I do not ship them. But I do understand where this is coming from, and maybe more people saw it this way, no judgement. It is even known that Watanabe, the Bird, would beat the prisoners for hours and then he would be nice to them and even hug them (information confirmed by others japanese camp accountants), and he would even cry. He was a sexual sadist. He himself admitted to getting sexual satisfaction by beating and torturing the prisoners, especially Louis in this case. It was obvious to catch this fact from the movie as it was portrayed very well his sick mind and feelings towards Louis. I felt the tension and the weird ‘special’ relationship they had, or mostly The Bird had with the prisoner. He saw the braveness and courage in him from the first time they saw each other, he saw himself in him, ,,you are strong, like me”, Watanabe said as he felt comforted as there was another person ‘like him’ making him not feeling as lonely as he was his whole life, which is shown in the movie. Having a harsh life since childhood and a bad relationship with his dad, that later developed into his psychopathic character, most likely didn’t feel affection his whole life, and therefore couldn’t tell feelings apart or having to control and manifest them into a correct manner. He was comforted by Louis’s presence and obedience, he expressed his frustration (*for being rejected as an officer) and jealousy through a passive aggressive behaviour towards prisoner Louis, letting his personal feelings act the way he did, (which was later in his first interview confirmed by him). That’s why he didn’t even want to meet him in 1998 when Louis was in Japan for The Olympics, not only I think he felt ashamed for expressing his feelings the way he did to Louis, but the pride and guilt couldn’t let Louis see him ever again.

The very memory of my face will cause a manifestation of my being in the future. You will be asleep in bed. I will be there, and watch over you. When you wake, you will not be able to move any part of you. When the doctors eventually find you, they will not see me, but you will, and I'll see you too. Forever, I'll see you.

I think if they didn’t met like the way they did, they probably should have bin friends. It’s hard to see how they *both* are struggling with what they gone through, but come on. I’ve seriously respect for Watanabe. I guess he hadn’t a very nice childhood and you really see how decisive that can be for you when you grow older. That guy really needs a hug, man.

Having a bad childhood isn't an excuse to abuse someone, give them PTSD and become a war criminal. How can you say you "respect" Watanabe after what he did? You're delusional if you think a simple "hug" would've prevented the atrocities Watanabe committed. Go read the book "Unbroken" and we'll see if you still justify the actions Watanabe had commit.
