Happy Sunday and welcome aboard MV FREEDOM!
This year has been a whirlwind of checking off boxes of the places we've always wanted to see in the Pacific Northwest. So today, we're heading to a place we've talked about for 6 years but have yet to go...Coupeville on Whidbey Island! It's a great little town with bad cell service for us, so we only spent 24 hours enjoying what we could while we were there.
But don't fear, we saved the best for last...cruising by MEGA YACHT LONIAN and her SUPPORT VESSEL HODOR. Yes, you read that right, this 285 foot mega yacht has her very own 200 foot "support vessel" carrying more boats, toys, crew and more. She also leaves a nice wake behind for all to enjoy!

My husband’s family owned the yellow building with the red trim in the 1950’s. Their pharmacy was the ground floor and they lived above it. They sold it in 1960 and moved the pharmacy south to Main Street where they built a strip mall. We love taking our boat to the dock and going into town.

Awesome video as always, Sean you'll never have to join a gym the way you work on your boat, you seem like a dedicated hands on captain and your boat is small enough to do all the maintenance yourself. When a boat gets too big it becomes overwhelming.

I run my N47 from the flybridge during daylight hours nearly every day out. With the bimini top it's shaded and quite comfortable on sunny days, and the visibility it affords for close-quarters maneuvering can't be beat. We've done legs of 8-10 hours running the boat from the fly. We had the same thoughts as you about how and whether'd we use it, and heard all the same advice, but we now cannot imagine not having it. It's also important to have enough electronics up there so you don't feel disconnected from the boat's systems while you are up there for long stretches of time.
@donhappel9566

I've done coastal passages from both flybridge and pilothouse on various boats and find I generally prefer the pilothouse off-shore but almost inevitably switch to the flybrige when approaching a harbor or when cruising in-shore. As noted, visibility is almost universally better from a flybrige, but spending a full day off shore in the wind and weather wears on you.

Always good to know that we’re not the only ones who go thru the “anchor anxiety” dance - picking “just the right spot” even if it means moving 3 feet in one direction, then 3 feet in another, then . . . Finally, finally, dropping anchor!

I'm guessing the owner hasn't ever washed a deck - at least not on that vessel (maybe they started smaller, who knows). I look at something like THAT as "nice place to VaCa but I wouldn't want to live there, hAhA. Even with a Powerball win my sweet spot would likely be someplace between 70' and 90' - money being zero object...

Look forward to you videos every Sunday. Interesting comments about flybridges. My boat, 391 Meridian, only has a flybridge. I thought I'd like to have a lower helm, but they are rare in this boat and most people I spoke with here in Florida that have both lower and upper say they rarely use the lower. We don't do much foul weather boating here, so the upper works out great. Visibility for docking and traffic on the ICW up high is great. Much easier to see the dolphins!! Give Sully an ear scratch for me.
@donhappel9566
@donhappel9566 4 жыл бұрын
I'd agree that a flybridge is very location and boat-specific. I'm in northern California and a flybridge is definitely more useful and common than a lower helm only. But I'm not typically running true pilot-house boats. I find for off-shore cruising I tend to stick to a lower helm or pilothouse but for local bay and delta cruising I rarely use them due to limited visibility. However when cruising in the PNW I tend to favor a pilothouse as the weather is more often wet or cool. One of my favorite things in the PNW is waking up early and having a cup of coffee in the pilothouse while the fog burns off before getting under way. Whereas closer to home in the bay area I'm more likely to be sitting on the flybridge enjoying that coffee while idling through a no-wake zone before getting up to speed. Additionally I often boat in the CA delta and a flybridge lets you see more over the levies. For me at least, it all comes down to where I'll be using the boat which dictates the type of boat I'd want for that location which in turn informs the flybridge or not question.

Would like to know a little about the boat when you purchased it. Shawn does such a good job of keeping it so nice. What kind of shape was the boat in when you purchased it and what are some of the detail things you have done other than waxing the boat? We appreciate how it looks and how well it is taken care of. Your engine looks like it was new and many pictures of other Nordhavn engines show wear and rust in places. Did you touch it up? Bob

Probably gold! And although we haven’t seen the N41 up close we like it. It doesn’t seem like a good liveaboard boat given the space layout, but it’s fully capable of long range cruising like crossing oceans so compared to other new boats in that price range it’s a great boat!

Holding Tanks: I'm not sure if this topic has been discussed in the past much. Curious about the length of time that showers, dishwashing and facilities can be used without filling up the holding tanks during a long cruise to Alaska or Hawaii etc? This is a topic that few people I know or have noticed discuss, either regarding a marine vessel or a land based RV.

Another video watched on a Sunday, another Sunday ritual written off, and as always enjoyable. Whenever I look at the like and not like column there seems to be a persistent two who give you a thumbs down. I think you both need to tell your "ex's" to stop watching the videos.... lol. Flybridges is an interesting topic, almost as good as anchor talk. Boats are tools and as such some tools are better for a job than others. Open console, center console and bow rider boats are great for Florida and California but not as useful up here in God's country of PNW & coastal BC. Think rain, snow, wind and cold. After sailing for many years, in one torrential downpour while I was at the helm I asked myself - why am I doing this - thus the birth of a new power boater. A flybridge is really not much different than a sailboat cockpit, crewing in the open in great and not so great conditions. As alluded to in the video, a flybridge adds weight up high raising the center of gravity, in a blow and rougher water conditions - not so great. I've had friends in longer trawlers than Freedom afraid to go out into the Strait of Georgia because their boat was swinging from side to side so much. The second aspect of a flybridge is an increased beam wind footprint, more boat above means more sensitivity to the wind, again adding to the side to side motion - rolling - of a boat. So add increased weight and increased side wind profile and a boat that looks like it should have great sea legs doesn't always respond well in a bit of a blow & water chop. Thirdly, no flybridge increases territory for solar panels. Solar panels are definitely becoming more predominant for cruisers in our neck of the woods and many a trawler owner with a flybridge often has difficulty finding real estate for the panels.

RE: the TWO 👎 comment/EX's - LoL... I never even noticed, hAhA... I just know a lot of green eyed haters out there with nothing better to do than go around the internet complaining and trying to bring others down. 🙄
