I recently restored my 93' LE Miata's seats, so I made a video of the process. I hope this video can help anyone who may be considering such an endeavor but is weary of upholstery type projects. I had zero prior experience with this kind of stuff but I'm very satisfied with my outcome! Don't be scared to try something you've never done. And I did it all for under $300! That's less than the cost of most cheap eBay racing seats, and way cooler! If you have any questions or need any help with a seat restoration project of your own feel free to comment or message me. Thank you for watching and have a great day.
www.interior-innovations.com
I got my new (faux leather) seat skins from these guys for $225 usd shipped! Add in the price of a few materials and tools I purchased for this project and I'm still well under $300.
Here's my price breakdown:
Replacement seat skins $200
Shipping cost on seat skins $25
2 yards 1/2" poly foam $25
Spray adhesive $8
Metal snips $5
Revolving leather punch $5
Eyelet pliers with 100 eyelets $5
Large container of zipties $5
1 yard nylon mesh fabric $2
Super glue $3
Large embroidery needle $1
3 gallons distilled white vinegar $6
Change found under seats/carpet -$2.46
Total cost: $279.54
I had all of the other tools/materials on hand, but they are all pretty common items
I'm now on Instagram! Add me @crogdogsgarage

They came out amazing! I just ordered the same seat cover replacements but in black. I saw another video where the guy gave up because they were too loose and wrinkly and I started to think about adding in foam to make it more fitted and for more comfort. I'm really glad I ran across your video because I'm now confident it can be done with materials I already have. Your instructions are WAY more clear than the ones given by the supplier. I hope you won't mind if I post your tutorial on the miata forums I frequent, you've got my sub and you'll be getting MANY more. You deserve it! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for all the details best video by far. I just stripped the seats in my 1993 Miata. Tomorrow will be installing the new skins, your video gave me the confidence I needed just when I was considering taking them to an auto reupholster shop. I'm 62 original owner rehabbing the entire entire and new paint job, saving it for my 1 year old granddaughters 17th birthday. Thanks to your video I'm motivated.

Really nice job. They turned out great - I looked on the Interior Innovations web site and your finished seats look nicer than the example photo they show there; I think topping up the foam was definitely a good idea to fill-out the covers making them look smooth. Thanks for posting.

Dude! Thanks soooo much for the video. I just finished installing interior-innovations skins on my '95 Miata. Your video was of tremendous help. I tried plumping up the foam with a garment steamer (as recommended by others) but it had little effect. Your use of 1/2" poly foam is what was needed to make up for 23 years of age and butt pressure. Thanks again!

This is THE BEST video I've ever seen on Miata seats!!! I have wanted a Miata since I was a kid, and I always watch videos on parts that I know I will need to work on when I finally achieve my dream. But when I look up videos on seats it's always bucket seats or racing seats or stuff like that. This was literally smarter than me I didn't even know you could buy replacement leather and just have basically OEM seats!!!!! For the record 16:30 THAT BOOTY!

Finally some kind soul gives me a step by step primer in how to rebuild my 90 seats, ( in the only year of red, of course), new driver side seats are impossible to find, and covers don’t solve the basic problem of people not knowing how to get in and out of sportscar seats. Thank you so much for a class video on how to do it ALL, ( I hate the old foam on the carpet, will do the same fix. First video I’ve seen on how to REBUILD old seats, driver side ALL have the same broken-down feel. Now I have a project. Thanks.

Hey man, you did a fantastic job for having no experience and for the price! I've done this job before with more expensive kits, so for the extra money you get the holes already punched out and located where they need to be...but for a little bit of work, you did it yourself and saved a ton of money! I'm seriously going to look into this website you linked. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the interior.

Thanks for posting this! I just finished redoing my seats in my 95 and this was very helpful. The addition of the rivets is CRUCIAL imo to reinforce the attachment points underneath. Without them the vinyl will rip. I was also worried the zip ties wouldn't be strong enough but they seem good and allow for cinching unlike the hog ring tool. I doubled up on spots I thought would see a lot of tension. I also added a lot of foam to my bolsters but not the bottom since I'm 6"4". My seat covers were only $100 for the pair and look good but with that low price, you end up spending more time to get them on right, adding rivets etc. It took me about 16-18hrs in total from start to finish. I also added heating pads to the back and butt of both seats ($35/seat ebay kit)

Wow your video and the steps you included were so good! Would definately be worth paying something for! I could not have done this without your video and/or it would not have turned out so good. About the only step I didn't do was the covering of the bottom of the seat; other than that I did everything just as you outlined. As one or two other people mentoned, I do wonder what the life expectancy will be of the plastic wire ties but also can not image trying to get hog rings down into some of the places; I think would be really really hard to do. If they would fail; I would just redo that part and I think I would still use wire ties to bring the points together; that might make hog rings possible. Thanks again!!!

@CrogDogsGarage
@CrogDogsGarage 5 жыл бұрын
I actually did do the upper bolsters too, but I don't think it's apparent in the video. You can see where I did the upper center piece and the headrest piece, but I had some lost video footage of putting the foam on the upper bolsters. I put a single layer on the front of the bolsters but it wasn't wrapped around the sides or back. Basically from the inside of the bolster to where the first edge seam is

Great job, but I think the zip ties will break with time. Hog rings are what they use in car seats because there metal and they will last. They might even be stainless steal or something. One time I bought some large zip ties from home depot and they were brittle right when I opened them up, they broke right away as I tried to use them the whole batch was the same, I dont know if they were old sitting on the shelf forever or just bad plastic to begin with.

The hog rings (or zip ties in my case) on the inner bolsters need something to grab onto, if your factory wire that's molded into the foam is missing though I don't see any reason why using a second wire on the top wouldn't work!

Thanks man! Jeez that sounds like one beast of a Miata, any videos of it here on KZfaq? And to answer your question; yes, I think the factory seats were a bit brighter of a red, and after 25 years the leather gets kind of a glossy look. I haven't been able to compare them to any other LE seats unfortunately. I think the color they listed for my seats was burgundy, but if I recall they did have a brighter red available too

So how have these held up ? I am thinking of ordering leather ones for my 300zx
@CrogDogsGarage
@CrogDogsGarage 6 жыл бұрын
Right on! They've held up really well, it's been a little over a year since I finished them, they still look virtually the same as the day I installed them. No fading, stretching, etc. My dog's always getting into the car with mud/dirt/who know's what on her and the seats always clean up easy and look good. I'm definitely glad I redid them

That is good to hear thank you for getting back to me . The one thing that is confusing me is interior-innovations has the same photos as ridies.com but is less expensive .

Hmm, yeah that is kinda weird. I had a positive experience buying from them but it was over a year ago now. I think one person here in the comments may have bought a set of seat covers from Interior-innovations but I think he found out they had been purchased by another company, and the price had gone up since I had bought mine

CrogDog's Garage....my only fear is zip ties failing over time.....but definitely easier than hog rings

They're the same company. Ridies bought out interior innovations a couple years ago, but haven't merged. Probably because interior innovations has a great reputation in the miata and corvette world.

Can I turn my material seats into leather ones??

Maybe the foam is in too good a condition on my seats but there is no way I can get a zip tie to push down and pop the end on the other side of the wire, there is to much foam injected all around that wire. I worked at it for 30 minutes with a couple different sizes, no go. I guess I'm off to get hog rings and pliers for doing it the old fashioned way.

Just curious, why add all the foam? Being I’m 6’4”, I wouldn’t fit after this. Nice thorough job tho I will give you that
@CrogDogsGarage

I mainly did it to account for shrinkage in the factory foam. Over the years it had shrunken down a bit and the replacement skins didn't have a nice tight fit at first

Did the seats come perforated for the speakers or is that the $100 "genuine leather perforation option"?
@CrogDogsGarage
@CrogDogsGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, my skins had the headrest perforated for the speakers, but I definitely didn't pay a $100 charge for it. It was a few years ago now that I ordered mine, I think I remember choosing an option to have them perforated but if I recall correctly it was free, since my skins were $225 shipped
