I needed a cheap fence solution around our garden to prevent toddlers getting too close to the edge of a wall. This fence was put together using 12mm rebar and roof battens, and I'll show you how I made them and also cover the total cost breakdown in the video.

Great video! Actually, the best part of the build was when you realized the jig was "stuck," and instead of pissing and moaning, you laughed and found a quick solution. It is amazing what you can accomplish with salvaged timber, which is why I have so much (probably too much!).

Hey Keith, I got this again on autoplay and it occurred to me that the long lower batten might sag anyway, because the long rebar pieces go through that piece of wood. So that batten is unsupported, and it's even weighted by the other rebar pieces. To reduce this risk you could put some nails in the same hole where the rebar goes through the wood, so that the wood can grip on the rebar more. Like keys in a keyway, if that makes sense. Also congrats for the 250k subs. Been watching since shed number 1!

@@chrisb2443 @RagnBoneBrown sometimes it's easy to misinterpret people on the internet. Thats why I always add plenty of emojis 😛😛😛😛given how heavy the rebar is, I think the lower rail will start to sag pretty soon, and he'll realize the mistake then!

@RagnBoneBrown I built a rose arch entirely from rebar a few years ago. Coat of hammerite on it and it looked just as good as anything you'd buy in a harden centre, but for less than ¼ the price. Nice and easy to weld too, as there's no risk of blowing holes in it. Even with my poor welding 😆

That looks really good. A great result! I would say that moving the longer rebars to a more central position on the panel made little difference because they are only supporting the upper batten, whereas the weight of all the bars is on the lower batten. Doesn’t seem to have sagged either way.

@chrisb2443

@@RagnBoneBrown but have you fixed those longer rebars to the bottom rail (by adhesive or some mechanical fixing)? Or are they just going through holes? If the latter then it’s not supporting any of the bottom rail.

Brilliant, well done Keith, that looks great and on a budget too, that seems a good price for the Re-bar, last time I bought some (during Covid) it cost me a good deal more ! Roof battens, gravel boards, fence posts and CLS are my favourite starting point for a project as they're standardised and therefore competitively priced ! You've now only got to work out how to stop over-enthusiastic Dads, Uncles and Grandfathers from kicking footballs into it and going A over T onto the patio over it ! 😜

Good idea on cleaning the ReBar before applying the Red Oxide. Actually when it recommends the surface to be 'rust free' it really means no loose or pitted rust; a dry light surface rust is what is needed as gives a surface that the Red Oxide can grip into. The surface covering will last much longer and shouldn't peel off. Was hoping you may have found a 'Vibrating tool' (Ooo err, missus) to help compact the postcrete mix - something I've been looking for for many months.
