Күн бұрын

In the last few days of June and the first few days of July 2024, Lithuania experienced its 100th Song celebration - known as Dainų šventė.
I’ve had a few requests to make a video about it but there’s so much history behind it - 100 years to be precise - that I don’t feel like I can do a good job discussing the whole thing as a sort of mini-documentary.
But what I can do is share my personal experience of it this year - my first ever Dainu Šventė.

I participated in the dance day (July 5th) and it has been the greatest honor and privilege to be part of something so grandiose and beautiful! Dancers and Singers from all around the world coming together for the preservation of a beautiful culture is something to be remembered! Dainu Svente is something you have to live!

As an American living in paradise my favorite music is the Lithuanian anthem. It sends chills everytime I’m at an event where it is played.

I have participated in Dainu Svente twice or 3 times as a singer years ago. We sang on the last day event. There's something special being a part of such an event. The atmosphere, the feeling of unity. I loved it, and if I had a chance, would participate again.

I came from London with our Lithuanian folk dance group Versme. It was great to be a part of a wonderful dance day event. Lithuanians from all over the world came, danced and sang. It's unbelievable❤

Almost all tickets were sold on the first day of sale. Only Vario Audra tickets was left until concert day. But it was about 10 perfomances for free. And another Dainų šventė will be after 4 years :)

We do the same in Latvia, I perticipated as a dancer when I was a kid, and later as part of a choir. Amazing experience (especially for singers). Since I live in LT, I went to Vilnius to see the concert, and I was dissapointed by the crowd. Most seemed to have gone there just to chat with other people. So much yapping in the crowd, felt like most people there werent even listening to the concert or the performance, just talking or browsing their phones... Sad, especially, when I know how much effort it takes for the performers to even get to the concert...

I feel you. I guess you were in tbe final event, Song day, in Vingis park, right? I am Lithuanian, I was in many events this year, and the crowd on the Song day also dissapointed me a lot. Really not much care about the event. I was angry, but then I thought that even if they were listening with "one ear", then still they will feel and remember at least something. I have to say that the public was much more attentive in all other events. I also know that in Latvia Dainu diena is really magnificant, and that many many latvians are singing in various chorus and takes part in Dainu diena! Greetings, brali !

Well, yes. And I was a bit dissappointed by the concert itself. It coud have had less of speaking, more of singing or more poethic parts, like the Folk Day concert had. And the songs seemed either sad or complicated and quite boring, low energy. There could have been more joyful and energetic songs, more so gs that singers and people would have sung together or wanted to repeat. There had been other Dainų Šventės like that before this one. This Dainų diena seemed like kinda lazy and tired event.

I suppose that your comment is exaggerated and not close to the truth. The songs are not meant to be performed at family parties, therefore they were vocally different and some of them demanding. If you are a true Lithuanian you could have sung along with a lot of songs. I found the announcements of the two Lithuanian TV-reporters very subtle, pleasant to the ears and far from boring.

Estonians were first to start their song festival in 1869, then Latvians followed. We were bit slow to jump on the train, but here it lives still :)

@@eruno_ through Germans the song tradition first is recognized as happened in EE. Then Latvia followed. There was a Song tradition in Lithuania Minor within Prussia in th19th century as well, but chronologically EE and LV had their first festivals before Lithuanians

Lithuania took over this tradition from Latvia in 1924 (where there were song festivals for 50 years), we know that, and we mentioned it during the opening celebration in Kaunas.🙂 We, all three Baltic countries, take from each other what is beautiful. Song and music only bring us closer.🕊️🫶🇱🇹🇱🇻🇪🇪

In Baltic States yes. First ever Song Festival was held in Switzerland in 1843. Then in Germany in 1845.

What is the reason that all television footage look like it was took with potato? 240p?.. Anyways. I was watching most of them live on TV, attended a few concerts as well. What can I say, last day concert is like a better version of Eurovision, if it is even comparable. Such a joy to such huge crowd singing. And this year event in quality and funding was the biggest so far. Just from curiousity I looked for footage from 2009, 2018 years. Sound quality wasnt there. We were very lucky this year to have really decent recordings of last concert. Cheers!

@@LithuaniaExplainedVlog The Dainų Šventė in Vilnius is only once every 4 years. There is an annual Dainų Šventė in Klaipėda, the Lithuanias baltic port. It's in the Vasaros Estrada. You can see it for free! And I think It's only one day, or I don't know. Because I've been a participant in the Klaipėda Dainų Šventė for about 3 years. And this year I was in the CENTURY Dainų šventė, and the Klaipėda Dainų Šventė. In the one day when choirs gather, there are dance groups too. So I wish you could see the annual Dainų Šventė in Klaipėda next year! Good luck and bye!:)

I agree with your critique of the website. The hottest ticket was Ensambliu Vakaras at Hill stadium (behind the Three Crosses). This seemed to sell out instantaneously.

Thousands of Lithuanians (the Vingio parko arena chorus was made of 11 000 of the best singers) every week spend few hours singing traditional songs instead of getting an extra job and buying a more posh car... What does it mean? Is Lithuania a rich country or poor?
@S4z000
@S4z000 Ай бұрын
From the video clips you have used, and the story you are telling, it seems you have completely missed "Ansamblių vakaras" which was the first of the major events on July the 3-rd. That's the one where they almost instantly sold out not only the tickets to the main event but also to the dress rehearsal a day before. Make sure to watch a recording, as it is arguably the most atmospheric and picturesque event. I don't think either Estonians or Latvians have that kind of event in their celebrations, so it is also kind of unique.
