I'm finally in Indonesia! Batam Island first impressions!
Previous video from Sentosa Island, Singapore ➡️ • I Can't Believe THIS I...
Join me on the journey from Singapore to Batam Island, Indonesia. Just a short ferry ride away, there is an island in front of Singapore that belongs to Indonesia. Batam Island is also a popular holiday destination for people from Singapore as prices there are way lower. I am keen to explore Batam city and then continue my journey into Indonesia from there on. Indonesia is probably the most requested country on my channel, so I am very happy and super excited to finally start an Indonesia series! Have you been to Indonesia yet? Let me know in the comments.

Wow, what an amazing start to your Indonesia series. Nice ferry ride and yeah, you can always use your Bahasa Melayu skill there. Both the languages are quite similar. Wonderful to see you interacting with the locals there...very friendly and warm indeed. How easy it's to go around with a bike taxi and that pakcik (uncle) is so helpful to offer his hand, showing you the ferry office, Kampung Bule and trying bakso, lndonesia's signature dish. Well, exploring local cuisine/food/drinks is always essential to any travel experience. Love this great episode with interesting content. Thank you very much for sharing. Looking forward to seeing your next adventure. All the best and safe travels, Ken.

At last, finally, you made it to Indonesia... Wow, been a long time since i was in Batam... Apparently from Johor Bahru , we can also take a ferry to Batam as well..... The Malay & Indonesia language is mutually intelligible .. Pretty sure ,you can make good use of your Bahasa Melayu there. From what i noticed as well, Batam seems to have changed a lot as well..... let alone COVID that as changed the landscape of many places..... Still hope you have a good time....Looking forward , take care out there...Cheers mate!

Hi Ken..if you want to take a Grab upon reaching the Batam seaport, i would suggest to walk over to the nearby Mega Mall opposite the seaport and take a Grab there..that is what i usually do when i reached Batam. Some of the non metered taxi drivers are ruffians so u gotta be more careful. But overall Batam is great.

I think what she meant unlimited data plan is because you can still use it after 32gb but the speed will drop/slower because of fair usage, not exactly unlimited. Indonesian language is basically modified malay language, combined with other native language, Indonesian can understand 70 to 80% malay language. Have a nice stay in Indonesia 🙂

expect higher prices than normal at ferry/airport terminals. Taxi mafia controls these high traffic places, walk out alittle more outside. But if they catch the grab driver, they might beat up the driver or trash the vehicle. Do be careful if the locals start asking too many specific questions or offer to help with services, may be a nice gesture but need to be wary.

I still remember words from a tour guide telling us not to give donation to street beggars or performers because you give 1, the next comes and so on. Just stay safe & be careful. I saw your previous videos that you speak Malay to locals. Anyways, enjoy the trip here. One seafood restaurant is recommended. It is love seafood. The fried crabs with bihun is a must try !

The Indonesian people are very friendly. Nice to see. Why would they tell you at the taxi stand that Grab is illegal? They went the wrong way to make themselves extra money from you. They see a foreign person and try to take advantage of you, you are too wise from so much travel , so standing up to them was great. Enjoy your stay.

Online taxis aren't allowed in many parts of Indonesia even on Bali. Welcome to Sumatra Batam islands next door to Singapore is Singapore's favoriete escape destination Where my beloved Maternal Grandma's grave is located. Passed away in 2011 at one of her houses there not long after my last phone call with her during my 3 years Bali right after my 7-8 years Europe/NL and surrounding, and so on. Btw, Bahasa Melayu came from Sumatra not Malaysia, fun facts: Men on Malaysian Ringgit and Singaporean Dollar notes were from Minangkabau Sumatra so with Singapore's National Anthem writer and composer came from Minangkabau Sumatra as well. Mindanao and Manila were founded by my forefathers as well kings of Minangkabau Sumatra before Spaniards came. (The 32gb data unlimited means the 32gb has maximum speed if it's finished you still have unlimited data but the speed lowered)

Ken in Batam you can still take Grab there. But discreetly they will fetch you a distance away from the taxi stand/taxi pick-up area because the taxi drivers see Grab as stealing their business.

Ken if you wish to travel around Indonesia especially in Batam tried avoiding those non meter taxi at counter they will usually charge higher price then normal I would recommend you taking Grab as far as possible but if there isn’t any grab you could use Bluebird taxi or any of Bluebird subsidiary as they are well trusted and their meter are not rigged but if you do see if there are rigged you can report it immediately to the customer service department

tips eating meatballs in indonesia. Put extra tomato sauce lot of it, a bit of kecap (sweet soy sauce) and the most important if you see sambal (chili sauce) dont add it too much because its so spicy, just tiny pinch of it, think of it as wasabi. I see a lot of foreigners add so much sambal for their first try, they straight regret it but pretend that was good 🤣🤣🤣

You may try travel through Sumatra or catch a ferry to Pontianak then to Jakarta. Each ferry takes less than 3 or 4 days journey

it's not that grab is illegal, but the taxi company is being destroyed by grab since they are cheaper. a few years back, there is a riot between the taxi company employees and grab employees, so they regulated it banning grab in some areas, but when you go out of the area then you can get grab or gocar

Hello Ken, I really appreciate this most interesting KZfaq. Batam is so close to S'pore ... yet so different. By the way when you reach Jakarta you will have the opportunity to try the HS rail line to Bandung which officially opened today. I believe the HS train drivers are initially from mainland China.

Im Singaporean. Usually when Im at Indonesia, to neutralise my way of converting SGD to IND Ruppiah is by always SGD$10 = INDR100,000. Thats a very rough conversion. But to be exact it is around INDR100,000-110,000. But yeah, most of the times it is hard to change the mind to use high number currency.

Taxi companies will always not favour Grab or other ride hailing platforms because it disrupts their "business", it’s good they exist so that tourists know the true prices of what a typical ride would cost.
