You have to muzzle certain dogs if they've already learned to use their teeth to get what they want. This is a no-no in our world and muzzles are designed to take their teeth away which makes everyone much less nervous and gives you the chance to correct your dog without worrying about being bitten. If you have multiple dogs, make sure you are the leader and don't let anyone of them show aggression towards each other, ever. The real issue here is that as a dog trainer, when I bring up the word "muzzle", most people hate it. They hate the idea of a muzzle more than the idea of a dog attack. Society is doomed and I can't fix it.

So happy to see a person, in the world of dog's, agree that aggression is only managed and not eradicated. And it's only managed by someone the dog respects. And that person has to be 100% on their game with eyes in the back of their head.

I have come across generic pitbull types in public places that stared my dog very intently (tail whips back and forth--a heightened state of arousal) but when they look at me, their entire posture changes to one of absolute friendliness.....there was no mistaking this complete change in demeanor. Another interesting factoid, the owners in both cases, were completely oblivious to their dogs' attitudes--absolutely clueless. By this point though, we are walking away as quickly as possible.

@@melblacke5726, yes. It’s “odd” in that we as humans think “aggression is aggression”. But think of it as “interest” and then we see bird dogs interested in birds. Cattle dogs typically interested in cattle and fighting dogs their own kind. This is what I think about raising a Pit Bull. It must be lovingly cared for in a close to a zero stress environment. There must be an outlet for its natural aggression: tug of war, spring pole, flirt pole, etc. There must be play and exercise to match its drive. Never encourage the pup to go after a human (don’t allow people to tease the dog). If those things cannot be effectively addressed there’s likely to be some trouble - especially the first and last item. The lack of an avenue to expend its natural aggression will also cause issues if the dog isn’t naturally calm. Mine, even as an adult, would come up to me, put one paw on my leg and lean into me for affection. The first three nights. S every Friday I would spend a few hours cuddling him and sleeping with the pup on a beanbag chair. When I got him outside I’d sprint away from him laughing. He’d run and try to catch up. Id get on the ground at his level and play with him - roll him over and scratch his belly, nibble on his ears. The goal was to show him that I was always in his life in a positive manner: a source of food, fun and consistent firm but loving discipline. He’d not hurt a human unless you went after someone in the house and only if the dog interpreted your intent as a serious intent to do harm. But he was ALWAYS dog aggressive. We had a poodle that he was fine with. As a puppy he always grabbed the poodle’s collar so we removed the collar. It was the Bulldog’s instinct to fight and wrestle and the poodle could not take that so I wrestled and played tug of war, etc with him and the rough play with the poodle stopped. I never did anything to make the Bulldog jealous. I would pick up the poodle and would step across the Bulldog and run his sides so he thought early that this was how to receive affection. When I’d take them to the vet the Bulldog was eventually unmanageable. We’d call ahead and the vet would bring us thru the side door straight into a room. As soon as Dr. Peter’s and his assistant would come into the room he’d whine and carry on with them for about five minutes. When he’d hear a dog bark he’d stiffen up like a statue. Staring intently in the direction he heard the bark. No dog could even approach the poodle. So, it CAN be done but it’s as much as the dog as it is the trainer. When people say “Pit Bulls are just like any other dog” they are either (a) ignorant, (b) not been around a working strain variant or (c) disingenuous. There’s nothing wrong with the first two… Also, every owner of an intense dog should have a break stick to pry them off. If you see a Pit Bull or any catchdog breed (to include a Malinois or Dutch Shepherd) with its owner and they have no means to pry the dog off go elsewhere. Mistakes happen and you don’t need to be part of that mistake. God bless.

@@WDLC1911 this is simply not true. Dogs who are showing aggression to other dogs are practicing over threshold behavior. They are practicing expressing their frustration with aggressive acts. They are at very high risk of expressing frustration at humans with aggressive acts. They are at very high risk of displacing their dog aggression onto a human. This goes the other direction too.

In 2021 Pittbulls Accounted for 93% of All Family pets killed by dogs. And they are only 🥲6% of dogs.

Dachshund s. can also be very agressive, muxh like Terriers , were used to go underground after vermin, & kill.

Thats not aggression at all. Dachschunds were bred to catch small animals: rabbits, mice, moles etc... This is the dogs instinct, not aggression. Until somebody socializes & trains the dog they shouldnt be left alone outside especially if they have access to small animals in nature. Its sad to think that poor dog lost its life because the ignorant owner mistook his small prey drive for aggression🤦‍♀️ And all that was really necessary were some antecedents, like a better gate/barrier set up.

Sounds to me like another neighbor had feeling like yours and decided to handle the problem. If someone allowed their dog to harm my dog, who knows what might happen. I absolutely love animals. But what makes me the angriest is when people refuse to leash their dog, who's running at you. They yell from down the block, "Don't worry, he's friendly!" I have to yell back, "Mine is not!" People forget a leash law protects everyone's dogs. It's not fair to the dogs nor to the owner whose dog is properly leashed.

I agree, people who say that line are one of the people I hate the most. How they can actually believe a dog will behave itself in all scenarios is beyond me. I have childhood trauma from neighbors who kept dog packs. Dogs change when they have a pack, like Dr. Jackal and Mr. Hyde. I have seen a perfectly good behaving dog turn into something wicked when it gets caught up in the moment with a pack. For example, my sister's next door neighbor's dogs (had around six dogs) were pretty okay when they were ALONE, but when they roamed as a pack they killed my sister's cat and tried to kill my dog while we were walking on the road. We always had to drive quietly when approaching the house, look around carefully to see where the dogs were and make it to the house before they got close, just in case they were in an aggressive mood. They also ALWAYS chased the car when we left. Let me tell you, trying to drive with six dogs chasing your car is awful. When the neighbors down the road had a child, despite the pack owner being a cop, we called the cops and had the dogs removed as it was against the law to even have that many dogs without a kennel license, let alone allow them to roam loose. We only waited that long because of the fact that the owner was a cop and all the shelters around at the time were kill shelters. Once a young child was involved any sympathy or fear of reprisal had to be thrown out the window. I am 40 years old now and am still traumatized from the things that pack did. Thanks to various incidents with aggressive dogs and their irresponsible owners when I was still young, I developed a fear of dogs that is still with me today. Even though I like dogs in general, I am always scared when seeing one approaching me until I know for sure that it is friendly. Even then I never fully trust them, and that is so so sad. I am missing out on all the good things that come with a close bond with a dog. Over all, people should never have more than two dogs unless they are a professional handler and follow kenneling practices, no matter how experienced they believe themselves to be.

Right - I agree completely! It was great when he pointed out that people shouldn't attach human emotions to these dogs. They're animals. Period. I feel very sorry for the poor Boxer. What a terrible way to go! The owners should be ashamed of themselves!

Since cities don't seem to enforce leash laws it's time to sue the Pitt owners. We have a leash law but from what I hear dogs get one "free bite" before it's enforced. There is an "irresponsible owner" who lets a Cane Corso roam loose. Think of a 110 pound Pitt that doesn't bother to growl first.

I own a Malinois as well, and I'm in a neighborhood with tons of pitbulls, my neighbors have 2, 1 which has killed a small dog. I don't trust bully's, and it's mostly because I don't trust owners of bully breeds. Most refuse to be knowledgeable of breed genetics and drives and excuse the behavior and say Bully's are gentle giants, nanny dogs etc.

Most pitbull owners live in their own delusional little world. Denying all facts, statistics until a attack actually happens to them.

People forget the actual “training your dog” part but even worse and possibly more tragic is they fail to get themselves trained. We are responsible for these creatures and we fail them when stuff like this happens.

You cannot single out Pits, there are many high prey drive and guard dogs being carelessly bred, carelessly managed and carelessly handled resulting in injuries to other animals and people, the Chihuahua is one of the worst biters of all the breeds the only thing that saves them from bad press is they are so small. A LOT of the Pits DO lead loving lives, this not a breed issue, it’s about the ignorant people who indiscriminately breed strong dogs for nefarious reasons and put them out into the world. The next big problems to come are all the carelessly bred Malinois, Cane Corsos, Boerboels etc at least here in Florida, that’s when people will see this is not a single breed problem. Imho, anyone who breeds dogs should be licensed and accountable for their breeding practices.

@@PARoth2011 I'm in Fla too , backyard breeding of pit types, is banned., & reputable breeders of purebreds as APBT, AmStaff , Staffies, allowed 2 litters a yr . there at counties, like Miami Dade, that bans, breeding, owning, selling any pit types. Tho some shelters still adopting out adult pits, can be risky, may been good with previous owner, but notcompatible with a new one. Many have owned for yrs. & then somethingcanset them off, . goes for any breed .. but majority are pit types .

Plenty of APBT people still do. This owner likely had mutts or other breeds she referred to as pits wrongly. Everyone with an actual APBT does not do this.

Only thing I can remember was gate in hallway got knocked down, and I believe all the dogs got bunched up at the sliding glass door trying to get into yard. That didn’t work obviously. So there was an altercation. I was just happy there were no serious injuries, and after that, everyone still got along and played like nothing had occurred.

Yrs ago when my oldest kids who are now in later 30's were young we had a couple of small house mutts from humane society. They were good dogs, playful n silly. When my kids would wrestle on the floor those two mutts would play attack the kid who was getting pummeled. The pack mentality it pretty easy to spot.

I have 2 pit/lab mix siblings male and female. My niece originally git them but was renting so couldn't keep them. The female minds really well but the male challenges me but I had German shepherds so am use to working with large dogs. I always put him in his kennel when I leave and my property is fenced and cross fenced to keep everyone safe. People need to be responsible with their pets...they are animals. On the other hand people also expect better behavior from an animal then people. I tried rehoming the dogs through a no kill shelter but they said they only place maybe 4% of pits and the rest? They get euthanized at a no kill shelter? So I took them home and 6 years so far all good.

People do not take the time to train their dogs and to work them in the area they’re bred to work. I work out my Mal 2-3 hours a day. We do PSA competition, I trained him for service and protection. He mingled with kids and is dog neutral. I found a place to train him. In he city off leash and it is a duck park so off leash dogs can’t go as they chase the ducks. My Mal leaves them alone. I can’t stand untrained dogs running onto our training sessions. The owners are Morons.

Mine would tag team other dogs, so boxers are no angels either. It is a pack mentality.

Better to never own pitbulls especially if you’re going to have them around other dogs.

Yes, I have only one dog and it’s a Rat Terrier who is spoiled rotten and loves to play but when I take her to the vet, I have to call ahead from my car to let them know my dog is here for her appointment. I tried one time taking her in with other dogs and she was starting all kinds of mess with pit bulls and every other dog. She does okay with small dogs but goes after big dogs. My dog goes on a walk every day with me holding tightly to her leash. Even thou I know my dog is very lovable, I take no chances for her own safety and others.

@@thepersonaljo unfortunately, in this particular case, there was severe animal cruelty and imho it was stupid, unfair and cruel to keep 4 in-house dogs outside alone for a weekend while the owners were gone. That gave a big clue about their dog management skills. It’s really easy to fall into complacency about multiple dogs being together (we have 6) though I agree with you these people ignored signs of potential danger. This story is so awful it’s easy for viewers to feel really riled up and make generalizations.

They are probably regretful of their actions but to say it was willful neglect is somewhat misleading. They did what at the time felt was right, even if they assumed wrong unfortunately it's not all black n white.

Owning this many potentially aggressive strong dogs is completely stupid on your part.

Having power breeds roaming around unattended is not a good idea. Pits usually wont start a fight, but they will finish it.

The one that changed everything I thought was one that was raised in a wonderful life and one day, a switch flipped and he attacked my Boston terrier. Nothing bad happened bc I was right there and was stupid enough to think he was provoked. It happened again, I put the dog down. I switched back to GSD’s and will always know in my heart how these dogs (Pits) can flip a switch, in the blink of an eye. I still have my beloved Boston, he will be 12 this year. My GSD treats him with the utmost respect. I’m 59 and have had a pack of dogs my whole life (live on 17 acres, home all day, great place for a dog) and until I saw it myself, with a pit I raised (have had several, btw) I would never have believed it. Very scary when it happens! 🥹 they are ALL pack animals! Some just more dangerous. 💜

@@LettiesLife Super annoys me when people say pits don't start fights. Or that they're a trainer and have trained aggressive pits, to no longer be aggressive. There's no such thing. All they do is manage the dog's aggression. But that will only work with someone the dog respects and even then, you turn your back on them and it's fight on. Are there pits who are not like this, yes of course, but they're in the minority.

Oh yes they can. I'm a dog trainer and I do it daily. I take a pack of dogs off-leash on a three-hour long hike with dogs, kids, bikers, joggers, puppies, dog haters, coyotes, deer, fisher cats, etc. I work with all types of breeds, sizes, and attitudes so I'm built for looking for any signs of challenging and I will pin any dog in an instant to avoid it. A real alpha is a parent and nothing more and they pin their pups even when they are fully grown if they dare challenge their parents. Study the wolves since dogs are domesticated wolves and still need a real leader in their life. Real parent wolves do not let their siblings challenge each other without being challenged by the alpha themselves. I've worked with very aggressive Pits, Dobies, Akitas, etc... they are all trainable and most people are not training their dogs properly. They even admitted here that they were "indoor dogs". No dog is an "indoor dog". Humans created this absolute mess, so humans must deal with it. Blaming the breed is an excuse for not taking responsibility for raising your dog properly, much like what we must do with our human children but who's gonna admit when they screwed up raising a kid? Not many! Therefore, most humans simply do not have any clue about dogs and suffer the consequences by having a domesticated wolf living in a DEN for most of its life, which is as unnatural is it gets. P.S. Wanna know the real truth? The real truth is that the smaller dogs are the absolute worst and most dangerous when they are bad because your wonderful humans let them get away with that behavior of attacking people or dogs because the dogs are so small. All it takes is one little dog to be an alpha and lead another few dogs around to start a fight and I've seen it many times. We can discuss this all day long as I'm packed with stories about how dumb humans are, how most aren't prepared to have a dog, and how most simply argue that a dog is not a domesticated wolf and is some other kind of creature "evolved" from wolves. If I could write a test that people would have to pass in order to get a dog or a have a kid, most people would fail.

@@asanseil5553 thats more managing than training..you are there to controll the situation. But even that can go wrong fast if a fight starts before you can adress it and others hey into it and you are alone. The fact that you haven't had any major incidents doesn't mean it can't happen. But the dogs will still have this in them and and can't be left alone together without someone there to supervise and control = they are not trained out of dog aggression.

@@asanseil5553 You can't train out genetics, and as a dog trainer, your methods are old school. The "Alpha" dog training method and pinning dogs is old school, and isn't necessary, also if you were to try and pin my male Belgian Malinois you'd get bit and it would be your own fault. Also Alpha male wolves drive off males that hit sexual maturity and don't allow them to stay in the pack. pit bulls were bred to be animal aggressive, with a high prey drive to be used for bull baiting, dog fighting and are still used for dog fighting and also boar hunting in the south. Most people don't buy bully breeds from reputable breeders, thus having unknown genetics bred constantly and sold for $200-500 online. If you think you can untrain a border collie to not herd, train a Belgian Malinois to not want to bite, or a pit bull breed to not be animal aggressive, then you need to go back and learn about breed genetics and drives.

Respectfully have to say False … I’ve had trained plenty of pitbulls to get there CGC’s , lived full life’s with kids and dogs , never one single bite or issue… I will give you that Once a dog has become a biter that yes you’ll always battle that underlying issue and hopefully with enough knowledge and skills you can manage it.. Pitbulls or any large breed is a risk my friend. Unfortunately people like feeling “protected” by there dog… so they go out get a dog with the biggest block head , and have zero experience or skills with dogs and think 2 meals and going in the backyard is enough.. I’ve been training dogs for years and I’ve been around some aggressive ass dogs , all shapes ages and sizes.. Pitbulls from a reputable breeder , are not born aggressive .. Pitbulls from breeders in or from the culture of dog fighting and protection , sure. **I say this because I do feel for people, these dogs can be SCARY! @@ShieldMaiden452 I don't care about breeds and never have. I never will. I see them all as wolves so I couldn't care what breed they are as the breed is only the specialty of the wolf. Whether it's fighting, herding, running fast, jumping high, chasing prey, etc, it doesn't matter to me. They are all fully capable of being trained if you're a real trainer and have a clue about what you're doing when they are puppies. If they are older or rescues who are aggressive, they get muzzled and I use a prong collar or e-collar. All of my puppies, adolescents, and adults get pinned when they show aggression or fight because I'm mimicking the behavior of their dog/wolf parents and nothing more. You can call it old school all you like since you love to keep listing to other lost humans about this topic, but try to tell that to a mother or father dog or wolf! I use the ways of the wolves to train them all and it never fails. I seek out aggressive behavior to nip it in the bud. I do this with every breed, every age, every situation. Sure, you have to be more sensitive than others due to some of their histories, but in the end, they ALL assimilate to the pack, regardless of breed, age, size, shape, history, and attitude. I've done it too many times to count. None of the dogs are mine and I take the rules of the wolves as serious as it gets. 99.9% of the time we are exploring off leash and everyone's been over-sensitized to every type of situation there is at a park/state park/conservation land. I train them to not chase deer, to not chase and kill, I've grabbed pit bulls by their heads when they catch prey and have made them drop it. I allow hunting in certain areas but not in others. Dogs are to be useful and when you're in a park like we hit daily, it is critical that none of them show aggression at all in any way whatsoever. I use e-collars, pinch collars, and prong collars when I need. Remember, parent wolves and dogs do not need any e-collar or any tool to train their pups, especially the more dominant ones who may have learned to be dominant at the nipple. I've seen too many times where someone's got a dominant dog and they're not correcting him/her. Because of my mighty wolf rules, we get to explore 99.9% of the time off-leash, they get almost complete freedom to be themselves, and you can bet if I needed to train them to hunt and kill larger game, I would in about a day. I pack them up so I can study them as domesticated wolves, not dog breeds. I'm a pack trainer and when you have so many dogs, breeds become moot as they all speak the same language. Dogs are serious business and most people simply have no clue. That's really not my problem or my job to fix this broken mess. Keep thinking a dog is a breed and you will fail every time. Is this why I'm always the 3rd or 4th trainer at someone's house? It's so sad I can't even make videos about it yet. And when it comes to wolves, watch any wolf documentary and you will see that many wolves stay in the pack for life and are happy to be subordinates. Not all of them are driven out by the "alpha". And remember the "alphas" are ALWAYS the parents! Are your children going to be the alphas in your family? NO. The parents are top dogs, and the grandparents are even higher. Grandparents do not take sh8t from grandchildren. This is nature. My oldest dogs have seniority over the younger ones due to experience. Many younger wolves can be more powerful than the alpha and up front on a hunt but they still have to wait for the older more experienced wolves to come from behind and make the death kill. This has been documented many times. Just because a younger wolf or dog is powerful does not immediately get him respect in the wild. People screw this up all day long in our world. Most humans get pits and other powerful breeds to show off or use as guard dogs so they are not training them as they should nor are they socializing them. And with the story above, you certainly don't keep four dogs in a house all day long no matter what breed! Trapping wolves is bad enough, no need to trap dogs in your house for life.

I truly believe genetics plays a role in aggression. I've seen pits raised in the same home, raised exactly the same, and one will be very sweet and the other aggressive. A person I knew had 4 3-month-old pit puppies left from a litter of 8. Three of the four ganged up on the 4th one and almost killed it. That is scary.

You are aware that when dog fights/matches happen there are three people in the ring with the dogs, right? The pit wall is 24” high. There are many spectators there. If the dog bites the handler, the opposing handler or the ref it’s disqualified. Manbiters are routinely culled.

@@WDLC1911 oh dear. I didn’t expect to get a reply from someone taking the comment literally. Even if fighting dogs was remotely legal. I would not only have no interest. I would be at the forefront of efforts to ban it. People intervening in domestic dog fights and in parks etc often get badly bitten. As very few would have any idea how to stop the incident quickly or successfully.

They will target any weakness in its pack. Unfortunately for the boxer, it was at the bottom. If either of the owners had been there, they would have ended up the same way as the boxer.

@@WDLC1911 Pits attack humans, the data doesn't lie. Data collected over the past 15 years, showed 346 out of 531 deaths, were from pit bull attacks. Jack Terriers are actually more aggressive, but the big big difference is, they're too small to inflict any real damage. Great Ted Talk. 👍

It sounds like the young pit has matured,he’s at the age where he’s feeling himself plus who’s to say the female wasn’t coming into heat? If both male dogs had their bits then this is the scenario you’d be left with unfortunately.

Stimulation, arousal, and rough play get them overly excited, and they get mouthy. The best thing is to avoid rough play, period.

Stop the rough play. Find another outlet to tire the dog like fetch or treadmill.

You need a good trainer to start with. Neutering is necessary. He ll be evaluated for behavior issues. A 7 month old Rottie who is not obedient is no joke. Dont think about foisting him off on someone else. Solve the problem and you ll have a wonderful dog.

My favorite breed. Your son is making a huge mistake playing rough with this breed. I am in my 60's now and have had them my whole life. My father trained them and dobermans for the military when I was a child. These are powerful dogs. What is cute in a small breed can become deadly in these giants. Never buy them toys that look like other small animals. Don't buy toys that squeak. Don't play tug of war with these dogs. These things can lead to encounters in which they will try to kill small animals. I like to use treat giving toys (such as Kongs) or puzzle solving toys. Obedience school is a must for this breed if the owner is inexperienced with these dogs. Getting him neutered and into classes could be the difference in a good family dog or another statistic. Even with all my experience, I have a trainer right now because I have a particularly stubborn one at the moment that will soon turn two. He is socialized and well behaved but as stubborn as a mule. Perhaps the most stubborn one I have ever seen. I have four very large dogs (two are Pitt Mixes, the one Rottweiler and one Rottie/Hound mix) and they each go into a their own separate kennel to eat, sleep and when I have to leave home. I never leave all four out together because I know a tragedy can happen.

Yes problem started in 80 s, mixing pits, with large breeds like mastiffs, & today what u got are not pure bred APBT, ( & that breed was made back in 1800s. from original Eng Pitb , bulldogs & Staffies) most these dogs that are called pitbulls are mixes APBT, AmStaff, Staffies, & who knows what . Fla has banned backyd breeding of these mixed mutts !!

The breed has been doing this since... the 1500's. What has changed? IGNORANT PEOPLE. Screw your call for a ban. Ban stupid people instead and the world will get more than a little bit nicer.
