Hi! A tip for cleaning silicone baking mats without a dishwasher- I use a cup of water and enough baking soda mixed together to make a paste. I apply the paste to the mat and leave for 20 minutes. After that, I go back and scrub/rinse it off.

I am by no means zero waste but I’ve been making more of an effort to be more zero waste. I love using bar shampoos and soaps and I use coconut oil as make up remover. I am a minimalist, so in following that I have reduced my waste by not buying as much! This was really helpful in giving me ideas on how to further reduce my waste!
@michy343
@michy343 Жыл бұрын
I suspect it's not an issue for you, which tends to be the case for dry skin that doesn't break out easily, but just a quick note that coconut oil is comedogenic and is capable of blocking pores, so oily and acne-prone skin types need to give it a pass. I know a lot of folks have had a disaster situation and decided they can't do cleansing oil, but it just have to be the right match. Oily and blemish-prone skin needs to choose a high linoleic acid oil and low stearic oil. For dry-hormonal types, oleic acid-heavy oils, like olive oil, tend to be okay, but it's not always the case. For folks who are just having zero luck with oil cleansing because the skin can't handle residual moisture, there's too options--using a non-oil cleanser for a second wash, or perhaps better still, taking a look at zero-waste commercial oil cleansers with microplastic-free emulsifiers (Etsy also has handmade ones for extra sustainable points). I highly recommend hemp seed oil and vegetable squalane as oil cleansers for blemished skins. For folks on a budget or with limited retail facilities, sunflower seed oil is a decent choice and available at many zero-waste shops or in big glass bottles online or at the supermarket.

I'd love shampoo bar recs, though. I'm struggling to find something that has cleansing power or natural surfactants, since I wash my hair very irregularly and need a deeper clean. I was given one to try that was pure beeswax and oils, but it required me to rinse and tone with apple cider vinegar.

I have been trying to live more sustainable for years, so that has meant little changes here and there. One I was hesitant to try was the shampoo bar. I have really thick curly hair. I finally switched at the beginning of the year and though it was a transition , I do love it. I also begin using cloth pads and period underwear. I have been for years using reusable grocery bags and I always have canvas bags with me as well as my cup, bottle and straw. We recycle even though it's a lot of work in my rural town to do so. We also try never to waste and always be as earth friendly as we can. I figure every little thing makes a difference. We have a favorite local Mexican restraunt and they think I am hilarious because everytime we come to eat I bring a canvas bag with bowels for left overs because I don't want the horrifying Styrofoam.

This list is soooo good. So many of my personal favourites, and Gitte's hair is looking beautiful. :) For period underwear, I would like to suggest Modibodi for people who need very heavy absorption. Their underwear absorbs a lot more than Thinx, and the latest release absorbs up to 8 tampons worth. I love it, I need it. Also, if you find regular menstrual cups too wide and difficult to put in, or if you have a long cervix, Intimina Lily cups fold smaller than a regular tampon and have a long shape as opposed to a wide berth. Great for teenagers. They also offer a cup that you can wear during sex, and a 'disc' cup (Ziggy), which many folks also find easier than traditional cups.
@TheCaitling
@TheCaitling 2 жыл бұрын
The ziggy is a disc shaped cup that gets folded and inserted, like the nixit cup which I have and love. I found it to be much easier than the diva / lily style cups!

I know that due to my health problems and allergies (many food allergies that are mainly plant based like soy) that I'll never be able to go even low waste/vegetarian but I do what I can. I reuse plastic bags for when I go shopping and I have several quite decent plastic gallon sized bottles that I refill at a water dispenser as my house water quality is quite bad (well water that has quite alot of sulfur so I don't drink it). I do reuse the 20oz Gatorade bottles to make my own Gatorade with Gatorade powder (gives me control over how strong it is) as I need to drink Gatorade to help with my dysautonomia. I just wish that medical waste didn't come with so much plastic waste but it is what it is. And it totally disappoints me that none of it can be recycled as it is either a blood product (IVIG for the CIDP that I have) or it has come into contact with blood (I have to run IV fluids for my dysautonomia, and I have to check my sugar and inject insulin multiple times a day as I'm an insulin dependent diabetic). As for food I rely on consuming animal products as it is rely my only safe type of food (food that I don't have allergic reactions to) but I make sure to only eat when I'm hungry which may be once a day or four times a day (depends on my hunger level and abdominal pain (can't eat if I have too much pain). I do wish that my pharmacy could reuse my medication bottles (use the same bottle for the same medication for me) to cut down on how much plastic that can't be recycled as there are only so many things that I can repurpose empty bottles for.

@Briar Rose I find it to be very effective if your body is already used to natural deodorant that is. You buy it once and can reuse it provided you don't break it. You need to use it straight after a shower on clean, shaven skin, wet it and apply 3-4 times in circular movements.

Very interesting video, good to keep in mind :) Wish I could be able to keep using my reusable mask, but in Romania they have just banned it. Like, WHYY, I swear I see a lot of people wearing the same disposable mask for longer than A WEEK (ew) - at least I could wash and boil mine if needed, this one I can't and I have to keep throwing them away/buying new ones. Ugh.

I put this answer in another comment but it can interest you : I also have to use disposable masks at work so I kept every single one I wore and now that I have enough I'm washing them at 60°C before use. (I put them in a washing net with my white towels). They can be washed 4 to 10 times !

It's not that hard, even when you're young :). Buy the least things you can, advertisement make you think you need things while you don't. If you postpone your purchases you give you time to really think about your needs and don't buy compulsively. When you really need or want something, try to buy the one with the lowest impact : made localy, with sustainable materials, or buy second hand ! I'm pretty sure you hear this everywhere since more and more people wants to be careful, but I hope it can help ;)

they come both with or without fluoride, many dentists recommend only using fluoride products for cleaning and prevention. My dentist told me that as long as they have fluoride they are okay 👏

@ktm9292 2 жыл бұрын
I've been using tooth tabs with fluoride for nearly a year and had a check up with my dentist just a month ago. He said my teeth were fine and had no concerns as long as they contain fluoride. Tip: for my tooth tabs they recommend you not rinse your mouth after brushing your teeth and leave the residue in your mouth after you spit to let the fluoride do its thing. Not sure if it really makes a difference but I have been doing this.

@TheCaitling
@TheCaitling 2 жыл бұрын
Safety razor blades are changed out more often however they are DIRT CHEAP 😀
@ktm9292
@ktm9292 2 жыл бұрын
For legs and armpits I change them once every 2 months. This is based on a shaving frequency of 1-2 times per week. I also make sure to rinse and dry after each use and leave somewhere out of the shower. If there are any signs of rust, you should definitely change it. For more delicate, private areas I always use a fresh blade. In Australia, I was able to order 100 blades for 17AUD and I imagine they're similarly cheap elsewhere. Also, because I have the twig razor that is single sided that 100 is actually 200 blades. Side note, if you haven't bought the razor yet and plan to shave the downstairs region, I'd recommend single sided to reduce the risk of little cuts from the other side.
