Just saw this video today on 1/1! This was excellent for me as I just received my sawstop which is kicking off the need to re-run electrical, finish the interior, put up cabinets, determine where the big stuff is going, etc. The way you have your "tool wall"/assembly/clamp wall mirrors the design I sort of already have (but need to massively upgrade) and reaffirmed my instincts on that area. So so relevant for me. Thank you!

The mini split is a great addition to a shop for winter and summer. I live in a cold winter climate so I plan to add hydronic floor heat in the concrete floor slab. My cousin in Alaska sold me on hydronic floor heat.

Thanks for the tour Jason. I built a new 30x40 shop this year, but lost 12x18 to my wife for her computer/media room and a 5x12 sauna room at my wife's urging, but I still have a lot of the space for my shop. I'm slowly piecing things together and your tour helped me think of a few things I want to incorporate. Hope your new year is prosperous and your woodworking time abounds!

Lovely shop, and I appreciate the thought you put into the layout. I loved the explanation of the tool island, and I basically have a tool island as well (table saw with extensions, and fold down outfit rollers, that also serves as the assembly table) but my shop is only 20 by 22' and at this point the shop is too crowded. Maybe someday I will get a bigger shop, but not soon. One thing I have is a two-car carport attached to the shop, and that greatly expands my usable space. I live near Denver and with the carport I don't need an inclosed garage to store the truck. So I have work benches with vices, grinders etc under the carport so I can cut metal, or large sheet goods, outside under cover most days of the year. I have space for temporally storing excess lumber there. I also use volatile liquids, torches, and my chainsaw outside under cover. I love that carport.

I think a carport could be very useful. Especially in a situation like yours where you use some things that aren’t well suited for enclosed areas. 👍

Drill a small hole through top bora bracket and bottom bora bracket, then attach small bungee cords securing the lumber in place as they vibrate to the edge over time with the opening/closing of the door. I suggest this so its easy to just unhook the lower connected bungee cords to get at any wood and they will just dangle until you secure them back in place.

Also being in a cold winter/hot summer environment, I wish I had had the foresight to insulate and instal a climate control system in my garage. Great shop tour Jason. Regarding the clamps... I made a drawer with low profile casters at all four corners and put my most used clamp in it and it slides under my workbench. So far it has worked out great. If need be I can wheel it out, tilt it up and lean it against one end of the workbench which keeps them out of the way until I need them.

Ditto on the mini-split. Love our Trane/Mitsubishi. For those that have min-splits, when cleaning don’t forget to check/clean the blower wheel. We added two layers of white foam (polyisocyanurate) to the garage door w industrial glue gun. Primed/painted exposed side w epoxy paint. Wasnt worried about the weight as I had two commercial springs installed and door balance shortly after adding. Went with a Direct Drive brand garage door opener (German) after old Genie screw drive died. Didn’t want chains in a dusty environment, plus the Direct Drive is fun to watch crawl along the rail. Plus side is the opener fit (circling clearance issue). Hadn’t seen too many side openers before. Installed weather seals around the gdoor. Put R45+ insulation in ceiling big help here in Dallas. If it’s 105 outside, and about 94 in the shop, takes about two-three hours to cool metal surfaces (eg mill table) down to 72. If we’re milling (metal) a lot, we just leave the mini split on 7/24. As part of the shop remodel, had all 220/110 plugs placed higher than worktops (also eliminates bending over). Installed removable chase panels for easy access so Sheetrock doesnt have to come down for future electric work. Covered all Sheetrock walls w 1/4” plywood painted w water based SWilliams epoxy paint for smooth washable surface (we do machining as well as woodwork). Slick surface doesn’t collect dust like previous room-textured Sheetrock did. Installed tall thick baseboards to act as bumpers to help protect the walls. Still need to plumb big aircompressor w copper lines through our two work rooms. Maybe this summer. Been approx. two+ years since remod started, liking all the changes so far. Would do an epoxy floor but have a few reservations about that to resolve in my head. As always, just sharing. Nothing more, nothing less.

@@bentswoodworking no doubt and most likely 👍. Would have to find a balance of sweepability and slip resistance. And the the thought of moving everything again, eeeessh, and having everything in the driveway for several days. Looked at Pods, those things are highway robbery, the scot blood comes out and cinches the purse strings tight. Would be great for cleanup and no staining (way oils and coolant), but would definitely go w a commercial install. About half of the (20’ish by 40’ish) shop is a separated room that we call the “model room” that has a solid oak floor over the cement. Very nice to walk/stand on vs the original concrete, self installed, 20+ years and no creaks. Even has a couple of “rocking chair memory” spots, eg my son was working on scratchbuild model parts and drilled into the floor when he was younger. Maybe next year after I’ve forgotten the pain of moving everything 😉🤙🤙 Keep up the vids! 👍👍👍👍 You’ve got a lot more patience for doing them than I do.

Nice shop. I have a L-shaped basement shop roughly 18'x24' on the long edges, losing a 6'x13' cutout for a laundry room, as well as a separate 12'x18' storage area for tools not used often, paint, large lumber, etc (also the furnace, H/W tank & sump pump). So, about 350 sq. ft. of workshop space or about 1/3'ish of my basement. The biggest space saver I have is my router table is an extension of my table saw wing. Well worth the $$$ for the cast table and it gives me a very large rip capacity, as well as ability to set the router fence well back. I can wrestle 4x8 plywood down the stairs, but prefer to pre-cut in the garage... about the worst thing with a basement shop.

The weight issue for garage doors is referring to the garage doors with glass panels integrated or fully across. Grossly (glass) adds a tremendous amount of weight. But a garage door technician will counter the weights with springs and the motor will still be fine. I’ve had these same motors on our multiple doors and no major issues. My doors are insulated by the manufacturer called unique garage door.
@arthurrice3915
@arthurrice3915 2 жыл бұрын
J B do you think adding 3 good size tracks to the door can be accommodated by adjusting most currently installed springs? Obviously, this is a taboo subject..but let's assume I'm referring to a qualified individual who has spring tension experience.
@JB-xx2hl
@JB-xx2hl 2 жыл бұрын
@@arthurrice3915 festool track rails, or any other brand being hung on a garage door aren’t a significant in weight to cause any issues or problems to a garage door motor (aluminum rails). The weight of a glass garage door is astronomical in the terms of weight due to the tempered glass. I’ve had my garage doors replaced and discussed this with my garage door guy. Just sharing the information. They make springs to accommodate the doors weight so it is using the principles of leverage to reduce the strain on the garage door motor. Regardless of the material with which your garage door was made, its thickness, its size (single or double) or if it has windows, it weighs at least 130 pounds (single door), and it can go up to 350 pounds or more (double door with windows). Contemporary doors (all glass, double door) can weigh over 400 pounds. Just disengage (the little cord hanging to disengage the mechanism or worm gear, belt) your garage door and you can see how the spring helps to reduce the weight of the door by pushing the door up. You’ll see the weight is drastically reduced. This is all the springs do. However over time, they will fail and this is normal life of garage door springs. But I recommend letting a technician that’s trained in this to do the work because the risk of injury is probable. If your home when a spring breaks I assure you’ll hear it as I’ve had one break on my old door it’s a very loud bang because it’s under spring tension and a good amount of force is being expelled. Nothing was damaged but the broken spring but it was very loud. I hope this helps answer your question. If you feel the door is more difficult with the rails being hung on them. Then simply hire a technician to make a spring adjustment to reduce the likeliness of stress placed on the motor. But this should honestly not be necessary in my opinion. I tried to see what a FESTOOL guide rail weight is and I’m not sure the information provided on Amazon is accurate but they aren’t that heavy but the information for a FS 1400/2 or 55” rails is stating it’s less than 6lbs at 5.73lbs according to Amazon. In the grand scheme it shouldn’t be a problem. An if your interested fastcap makes a mounting clips for track rails to be affixed. I hope this information helps you.

Insightful shop tour. Thank You. Also, can you follow up with a look at how you store all the stuff that otherwise would be found in a typical garage? Like vehicles, extra household storage, tarps, tents, sleeping bags, Christmas decorations, bins of stuff, etc. It can’t all fit in the Husky cabinet. We’re setting up a retirement woodshop in a two-car garage/man cave and right now, some of that extra stuff (even my lumber) have been temporarily moved to the dining room. It’s not a big deal during this transition, or with a global pandemic that seems here to stay, but it’s not all gonna’ fit back in. I have to find or build new storage space.😁

I actually installed a drop down attic ladder in the garage. I store decorations and a few other things there. Everything else is in the husky cabinets. I don’t have a lot of house hold items I need to store in there luckily. I actually totally meant to show the ladder and attic but realize I forgot.

After having my router lift mounted in my MFT for over 10 years, I can’t tell you how many times the router operations were in the way of something I wanted to cut real quick on the MFT. Drop the bit, remove the entire fence assembly, then try and get it back where it was. Using an Incra LS setup helps but I am so glad I built a separate router table this year. I keep an extra plate in the MFT to fill the hole, but my 2 cents would be to shove your router table into a corner and pull it out when needed. You did mention you rarely use it, why compromise your assembly table operations? Thanks for the awesome videos!
@bentswoodworking
@bentswoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Alan, I am still unsure if I want to put it in the assembly table. I just really like the idea of not having another machine taking up space. The way I plan on doing it, I am not as concerned with it being in the way of a cut. I only cut in 1 spot on the MFT so as long as the bit was dow, I wouldn’t have an issue I don’t think.

I'm working on converting my farm shop from a general purpose shop (uninsulated pole barn) to a wood working shop. Been insulating things and will be replacing my pellet stove with a mini-split before I get done. Still trying to sort out my layout. However, I'm curious about your decision to have the specific outfeed table vs making your assembly table the right height for an outfeed table like many seem to do. I was planning on building a nice assembly table/outfeed table vs a separate outfeed table so was curious why you went that route.

Jason, thank you for such a thorough tour of your shop. I'm in the process of re-configuring my own , which is in a two car garage. I'm curious: what do you build? Our shop layouts and tool selections are personal. They're extensions of us and what we create. I'm having trouble picturing what you enjoy building. Jason, I really appreciated this tour and sharing your thought process on setting up your shop. I realize a "working" shop is always going to be in some state of flux as workflow and needs change. I may be in jeopardy of losing my man card here, but I could really use some help in organizing my two-car garage that I still need to park one car in. Of all the things that I'm good at, organizing is not one of them and I don't have the luxury or patience of re-doing my garage/workshop until I get it where I like it. I need to nail it as much as possible on the first shot. Would you or anyone else out there know of anyone that offers such a service of planning or designing an existing garage into a workshop, and taking into consideration the equipment I currently have? Great content as always Jason, thanks, Chuck

Have you considered putting the router in the table saw extension. If you don't use it that often it might be more "out of the way" there instead of your main table. Also congrats on the new baby coming.

Thank you! And as for the router in the extension, I can’t do that based on the location of my jointer/planer cause I have it at the end of my table saw. I suppose I could do that and then just move the combo when needed but I really hate doing that. 🤣

Jason - awesome job putting together your shop. Your innovative mindset is truly motivating and inspiring to say the least. The closing of the 3rd stall is without a doubt the boldest move I have seen taken by homeowner / shop operator. Like I said, that I have seen personal. It definitely is an easy job at the value the shop brings to real estate. I have an extremely similar setup in my 3 car garage. While I personal would strongly consider this as an option; would you help my understanding a bit better of why the full blown removal is done? Was is required for the current set-up? I'm dealing with the same (I'm sure there are more of us) issue of....where do I hang up all these awesome expensive things that take up huge wall real-estate and are less than an inch in thickness - primarily : the green and red ones! I've been trying to design kind of a tandem cabinet system to where the front and end cap sides are used for this hanging solution. Instead of my woodpeckers taking up the size of a small car on my wall, I want my wall hanging item to hang on my cabinet faces. My FS300/2 & FS2700/2 are unique animals...whats awesome about a 10' track? It's 10 foot. What sucks about a 10 foot track? It's 10 foot! Mounting to the garage door I think I the best. Or...a long horizontal cabinet that would have gas strut assistance would be another solution. And enjoying the pretty red aluminums to not get "banged" around while opening and closing could be done with custom foam, perhaps..?? Also, clamps storage is another awesome / s***ity
@arthurrice3915
@arthurrice3915 2 жыл бұрын
...I was editing my post and it posted... appogies Regarding the clamps. Have you ever thought about incorporating clamps into the bottom of your assembly table, or in the toe kicks of cabinets? So the reason for removing everything for the door was to not have the rails and garage door opener hanging above me. Also, the rails needed to be removed to build the wall around the door. It’s all reversible if needed.

Very nice Bent. Just curious about your CNC setup, is it on the wheels? How often you have if any to lube the rails that are against the wall? My CNC support suggested that i cleanup my entire rail with digresser at least once a year and squeeze fresh grease into the ball bearing housing. I kind feel rails get sticky especially for someone like me who might not use it for a long period of time.

You might consider selling the three mft tops and just make a deep torsion top for your existing base. Now that there is a hinge for your crosscut rail that mounts to the dog holes of the top, adding rails to the sides should take care of all your other clamping needs.
