Was very satisfied with my carving and separation on steeps within three weeks. Even had a crack at snowboarding. Absolutely stoked to get back into skiing. About to head off for another three weeks.

It's always a bit hard to interpret on video but you still seem a little unsure, I don't know how to articulate it ^^ Maybe show us some clean carving at the end where you really lean in (that's kind of what I meant, if you've been skiing for a long time you kind of trust the mountain and lean a bit forward, don't really actively break anymore, instead change the carving up a little bit.. increase the frequency instead of putting pressure on your knees to break.. it's hard to explain, maybe I'm just talking nonsense) But I gotta say that you did incredibly well for only 4 years of skiing, good job. I've been skiing for 14 years but I don't really enjoy terrain as much as you do. What you did there looked really good. Props!
@jacobovermyer7 ай бұрын
There are definitely some techniques that i am still working on! Forward pressure and clean carves on almost any groomer are very easy. Most of the year 3 video after Utah were runs that were very steep (35° - 40°). That is where I struggle to consistently keep my forward pressure. I do make that a focus. I plan to take a lesson this season to dial in those little nuances! Thanks for watching!

Very nice to see! I progressed to a similar level within my 3 seasons of skiing, I tried it once my senior year with a lesson, then my first season kicked off in college. Except I leased my gear then, which was really nice to be able to switch out skis as I wanted. through videos I self taught my way to intermediate, and plateaued until my second season last year. Where I got fitted boots, and 2 lessons fixed most of my problems and moved me into confidently calling myself a decent skier. I got my own Moment Wildcat 101’s between the lessons, and to be honest they let me get away with so much. Me and you have that “I discovered something I will live for” passion to skiing that you can only get when you try it when you’re older. Fun to see your progression rocket along right with me. Thanks!! I actually just upgraded (the last clip of the video) to the K2 mindbender boa 130. They're still technically a touring boot, but the boot fitter recommended them to me, knowing I was going to be resort riding. They're more of a resort boot that "can" walk. Rather than a touring boot that is good for downhill. I found myself overflexing my old boots recently. Maybe due to wear or progression, not sure. Do you think the boots were a good purchase?

As a lifelong snowboarder, I highly recommend you take it up as well, if only for how much more fun powder days are If you stance the bindings a bit back on the board, you'll "surf" the snow and basically be on top of it instead of navigating through it as you do with skis

I have something to aspire to. Question: what are the various skis you bought over the years? Do you prefer stiffer skis with lots of metal?

1. Dynafit beast 98 2. Rossignol Smash 7 3. Salamon QST 92 4. Nordica Enforcer 104 5. Moment Wildcat 108 I sold pairs 2 & 3, and will be regularly skiing 4& 5 this season. The Enforcers have a ton off metal and are super damp and can monster truck over basically any snow condition. The moments are stiffer with less metal but are a much better platform for landing airs and more playful. I definitely think a stiff ski is the way to go if you ski aggressively. I think it will limit you less. But that all depends on what terrain you like too. Hope this helps
@vladarino7 ай бұрын
@jacobovermyer Thanks for your response. What didn't you like about the Salomon QST 92? Too narrow? Do you prefer the 104/108 width underfoot as the sweet spot between stability and nimbleness? I am struggling a bit navigating mogul steeps with 100+ width skis. Probably bad technique.

It was kind of just trial and error. I got my 2nd pair because my first pair was for touring (I planned to get into backcountry skiing). I based my next purchase on things I didn't like about my 2nd ski and what I wanted to ski. Eventually, I settled on more of a big mountain oriented ski because that is the terrain that I enjoy. I really really really don't understand why people get touring equipment first thing when its the most expensive and technically specific type of gear and then they go off and use the equipment in ill suited situations and attempt to progress in every aspect of skiing from the start... Please hear this if you are beginning to learn how to ski! There should be a primary focus on forming a stable base of knowledge and experience around the simple turn. This is the single most important aspect of skiing. Unfortunately, it is often completely overlooked by beginner skiers these days. I encourage everyone to first purchase cheaper, simpler, basic skis and boots to use while practicing ideal carving form on low angle groomed runs. This should be practiced for at least long enough to develop a consistent form that does not falter. Only once one can execute a series of turns in perfect form on a variety of groomed runs should the skier venture out to all the many joyous aspects skiing has to offer. But please do not reach beyond your foundations before first ensuring you can make that fundamental basic turn in perfect form. (and don't buy silly expensive gear when you have no idea how or where to properly use it)

Each pair had its purpose. The first pair was a touring ski (thinking I would ski the backcountry, which I did not). The 2nd and 3rd pair were 92 underfoot for groomers. I decided I did not like that width and sold them both. The 4th and 5th pair are more big mountain oriented, which is what I like to ski. The 5th pair (moment wildcat 108) is a little wider than my 4th pair (Nordica Enforcer 104). So they will be for my softer snow days. For someone who's just looking to start snow skiing. Can you explain the reasons you bought the 4 different pair of skis and why you did? For each pair??
@jacobovermyer8 ай бұрын
Each ski has different characteristics and favors specific terrain. As I progressed, I started to need skis that were wider and stiffer because I liked off trail, steeper terrain. First pair is more for backcountry (I thought I would backcountry ski, but I ended up not) 2nd and 3rd pair were more groomed trail and hard snow specific. And my 4th and 5th pair are geared more towards bug mountain steep terrain with softer snow. The ski that's right for you will determine what terrain you want to ski. I found myself not getting enough out of my first fee pairs which is why I kept switching. The 2 that I have now (moment wildcat 108 and nordica enforcer 104) are pretty much all I need

I've got a real question. So when you're on icier terrain or when there are ice balls on the slope is it normal for your skis to look out of control and just wobble everywhere. Cause I always get scared when that happens. Like I just can't quite get to the point where I can slide on the ice. It's always bouncing around.
@jacobovermyer7 ай бұрын
If you're talking about refrozen snow that thawed the day prior, yes, that's normal. If it's true refrozen ice and roller balls, those are very hard to ski. Obviously, my suggestions are very uneducated. But I will try to help. I would definitely focus on keeping that outside boot pressure very strong, with your legs ready to absorb bumps. Also, if you're dealing with those conditions frequently like the East Coast, I would recommend getting some narrow skis with lots of metal to help cut through that stuff. I don't ski a lot of ice here in CO, so my knowledge is limited with that stuff. But i will always suggest lessons to anyone. Coaches will always be your best reference to learn. I hope this helps

Nice video but as European u don't have that much time a year to ski because its to flat in west-europe. So u need more "years" to get on the same level as u did. Anyways great progress u can be proud of it!

Thanks. Love it! I’m 48 and I’m on my journey now. Back to crested butte today. Broke my leg skiing badly in 1997, didn’t ski again til 2021. On a mission

@mpow7153 glad you're finally back skiing! I hope you make the progression you're wanting! Have a great season

So... actually it's your 5 year progression....
@jacobovermyer7 ай бұрын
I mean, I have 3 years' worth of footage.... this is a progression of 3 years of skiing..... no, it wasn't my first time skiing. But 3 days of skiing prior to this (2 in illinois) is pretty much irrelevant. Pretty clear in the video.....

It's actually impossible to see any progress here since there is nothing to look at other than ski tips, which look very unstable.. 🤔choosing steep and rocky slopes alone does not indicate any progress in skiing, any fool can do this.
@jacobovermyer7 ай бұрын
You are wrong in both aspects. There's clear progression here. Whether it's up to your standard or not. I am not anywhere near a perfect skiier, but if you see no progression, you are blind. Also, if I were to send my beginner wife down any of the slopes from season 3, it wouldn't go well. Verifying that "any fool" can not do this 🤦♂️ Thanks for a negative comment tho. Always one unhappy person on YT!
