Here is an overview of my old 5 x 10 foot HO scale layout that used to reside in our upstairs game room and has since been torn down.

The track is all Peco code 83 (both turnouts and flex track), and the layout is wired for DCC.

This gentleman knows what he is doing. The traditional 4x8 layout never should have been a suggested layout size. It is of course understandable that since plywood & homasote came in 4x8 sheets that it became the standard small layout size many years ago. With only 4' you can't really run larger locos like Alco's or larger steam loco's without some significant binding in the turns. By expanding to 5x10 these problems are alleviated and allow for more scenery options as well. Very nice small layout!

+drewzdrew27 Thanks, I appreciate the comment. While I like the layout, I'll probably scrap the layout for parts at some point this year as I work on some new layout projects since I've had this one for around 10 years now. The best way to get better is to keep building new layouts, or keep redoing sections of existing ones as you learn how to do different things. You can read a lot or watch a lot of videos, but the best way to get better at doing different things is to actually try them a few times. The first attempt at anything usually isn't great. Every layout I build gets better, of course that by itself is a never ending circle. As you get better, various aspects of a layout that seemed good at first start to bug you when you realize you can do them better now.

It looks very much like "The Ute Short line" a track plan in the Atlas book in the 70s. The large industry in the foreground, the town in the background and the foliated hill. Even the yards. I always thought that was the BEST plan for5x10 HO. You've done an excellent job of very attractive and convincing scene vignettes. Great job. I have a big 30x30 multilevel with the dog bone coming out into the middle. It is sceniced and operating for decades, but I could never really finish it to my satisfaction. I regret going too big in my heady 20s youth. If I start again in a new house it will be this plan. When I'm happy with that, maybe a portable 2x8 module or two I can hang off either side for more switching.
@StevesTrains
@StevesTrains 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I don’t know if I ever saw that plan or not. I know a lot of times you see things and forget about them and then subconsciously it impacts your decisions and designs years later. So who knows, maybe that is why I came up with the plan I did. For me, a 5x10 is even too big for me to start with. Free time is even less and that layout would take me many years to finish if starting today.

I've had it for quite a while and we are getting to where we need more of the space in that room for other things. I plan to build a couple small switching layouts and then probably a modular N scale layout I can easily take apart and store (something like a layout made of T-Trak modules: www.t-trak.org, just not necessarily to T-Trak standards).

Really really nice work! I'm about to start an 8x5 and love the design of the hill used in the middle. It looks like in the video you built up a hill and then placed trees on top to create the divide? Also are the buildings on the right of the layout raised at all or just flat? Really nice layout!!
@StevesTrains
@StevesTrains 7 жыл бұрын
The central hill is all foam with some plaster gauze on top. The trees are a combination of super-trees and puff balls. Some of the buildings (the little town area) on the back right side are raised up about 2", everything else is flat. Still plan on taking this layout apart this summer, saving most of the trees, the buildings, detail parts, etc. and using them again on other projects. The room is mostly used as a play room now, and I need to create some additional space.

I set my about 8" below the bottom of the sloped ceiling part which is also a little less than four feet. I had an earlier layout that I set right at three feet and operated that sitting down. I raised this one a little higher so I would have more storage room underneath.

@StevesTrains
@StevesTrains 5 жыл бұрын
Dust and cobwebs were never really much of a problem, it didn’t get too dusty in our game room, not nearly as much as downstairs. I would use our handheld dyson vacuum on it every couple months to keep things clean. Everything was glued down so the vacuum wasn’t a problem. I would use the attachment for dusting that has the long bristles on it so it wouldn’t damage anything. Of course the layout was taken down last year, so not a problem anymore!

I do work on projects for clients but have taken a couple of months off and will be working on a switching layout for myself here in the short term before starting the next client project. I have a waiting list of over a dozen people who have requested projects and it will easily take me a few years to get through that since I can only work on them a couple of hours per week.

Beautiful but boring.

I disagree with the “boring” comment. This is a fantastic little layout and would be perfect for many people.
