Hi Meiling, I really enjoyed this video. I am a Canadian who has been teaching English in Taiwan for the past 21 years. My Chinese is bu hao 😒unfortunately. I certainly experienced culture shock here. To a Canadian it seems very odd that a group a people who are quite open about asking your age and salary within a few minutes of meeting you, are so reticent about telling you other (more interesting) things about themselves. I think you can be very proud of the personal growth you've obviously experienced while in Canada as you have adapted so successfully to a completely different culture. Take care! Patricia

Thank you Patricia! Wow you have so much experience teaching and immersing in a different culture from your own. I have to say asking about age and salary is like a common topic in Chinese culture, especially older generations like to ask 😂 I see how that gave you culture shock considering it’s different in Canadian culture.

Thank you, Meiling, for this very interesting video. As someone who has lived in China for many years, I have had countless questions about the conditions of living abroad. But comparing aspects of different countries, particularly salaries, is like comparing apples and oranges. The cost of living, food, transportation, various services, real estate rentals, taxes, and other expenses, can vary significantly from one country to another, potentially leading to inaccurate perceptions of living standards. For me, living abroad and immersing myself in another culture has been an immensely enriching experience that has even allowed me to better understand my own country/culture. What about you, Meiling? Thank you again for sharing your valuable insights on this fascinating topic! 👍🌷☀ Patrick

Thanks for sharing your experience Patrick! I resonate with your point of the differences from one country to another. It’s really hard to compare. I also started appreciating my own culture more after moving to Canada. I love immersing myself in diverse cultures in Canada and making friends from all over the world.
