60 mins of various tunes, played by Ian Clare on the Blackpool Tower Wurlitzer.
This is only the second time I've played a theatre organ, the last time was back in 1984.
Huge thanks to my friends and family who got me this unforgettable experience for my 60th birthday present.
Enjoy
Ian

So talented, you are. I don't know why, but your playing brings tears to my eyes. I listened all the way through to the end. Thank you for sharing this experience. You're very fortunate to play so well. I wish I could play like you. ~James

Many thanks for your kind comments. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this, and sadly I'm a long way off being a pro. I've been playing electronic organs since I was 13, primarily for my own amusement, though for a little while I did have a residency in a social club whilst I was a student.

A very happy belated 60th birthday, Ian!! I'm sure you had a fabulous time playing one of the most iconic Wurlitzer organs. On a tangent, it's lovely to hear the pistons' pneumatic 'phut' - that by itself is music to this old codger's ears!! Well played, young man (and at 69 I can say that in total honesty!!). Kindest regards, Peter A :) :) :)

Thank you for your kind words, I thought it was going to be harder to play than it was. I was expecting more of a delay from playing the notes to actually hearing them.
@OrganMusicYT
@OrganMusicYT 8 ай бұрын
@@ianclare5721 There is zero perceptible delay in the mechanism of a pipe organ with an electronic, or electro-pneumatic action. Any delay from the organist's perspective is acoustic - the time it takes from the sound to get from the pipes to you. That only happens when you are positioned a LONG way from the console. Luckily, the pipes in the Tower Ballroom are right over your head so the sound is instantaneous. Over at the Winter Gardens when playing the Opera House Wurlitzer, you hear it several times - the sound bypasses you at the console, travels 130ft and slaps back off the rear walls of the stalls, circle, and Balcony at slightly different times and travels another 130ft back to you at the console (roughly 1/4 of a second delay per wall). Again, with the Wurlitzer in the Empress Ballroom, you hear "mush" as the sound rolls around the room and works its way to you, eventually. In the room though, both sound perfectly fine.

Happy birthday from afar. What a great gesture from family and friends (did the camera ever pan to show them?). Across my many technical hobbies, it is becoming more common for the middle generation to club together to shout something special for a significant birthday for the older generation: a tandem skydive, a scenic flight over Antarctica, driving a steam loco. This one was different, and needed practice and skill. I could recognise most of the stage-musical tunes, and loved the Orpheus medley. Then the fitting finale: a great thanks gesture for the hosts, in keeping with this organ's legacy. I await your 65th or 70th.

Thank you for your kind comments, I had a week from receiving my gift to actually sitting at the console and playing the Wurlitzer for an hour. I have never practiced so much as I did during that week, and my performance was far from perfect, but it will always be something to treasure.

In the comments it was said £275 for an hour was high but really you are on a three phase electrical supply and im sure nobody needs reminding how the price of electricity is these days ? Plus an organist is there on hand to assist with the presets! To give the chance to sample this iconic theatre organ is commendable!

I just listened again and the tune at 55 mins (can't remember the title, is it the lonely shepherd or something.? ) it sent shivers down my spine ! ! ! ! !
@ianclare5721
@ianclare5721 Жыл бұрын
It is indeed The Lonely Shepherd or its correct title is Einsamer Hirte. It was written by James Last. There is a story behind this, I can only play from reading the music or from memorising the music, I can't play by ear. This piece of music wasn't sold in England back in the 80s (not sure if its still the case), a friend wrote to James Last to explain and he sent a photocopy of the music for me to play.
