Something that has helped me in the classroom with hearing each other is I put the online students through the classroom speakers so when they talk, it’s through the whole classroom, and when in person talk, I have a microphone that I give to them, I do have to wipe it down after each use but it’s so hard to hear in person kids when they talk with their masks on too.

I have a dry erase mat that is binder clipped (what ever the o rings are called) to a sheet protector so that my kids can have 4 different organizers that they regularly use. I include fraction bars, a place value chart, a long division organizer (when they first start to learn long division), grid paper and a vertical place value chart for lining up numbers when completing computations.

Thankfully, our schools provided Owl cameras, so both my virtual and in-class kids can hear and see each other. I also show my virtual kids on my smartboard. I love using Flocabulary for my lessons and the kids love it too. I use a lot of Kahoot and Quizziz games too. I started teaching hybrid last October and it's definitely been challenging but I feel more comfortable now.

Just wanted to co-sign on the Name Wheel (I use it for every subject!) and those black masks. I got a box for $6.99 on Amazon. If you want a comparable cloth mask I recommend Land's End. They are comfortable enough to double mask as well. As for the the cart, it comes with a topper that often goes on sale at Michael's. I would recommend adding velcro or something sticky on the bottom to keep the laptop from toppling over. I have littles and they love to bounce around.

This video is soooo helpful! I teach in Southern California, and we’ll be starting hybrid concurrently 4 days a week in my district in mid-April. I’m so anxious! 😱🤯😢 But I love the tip to plan for digital lessons first, then adapt. You’re right: we should NOT be planning for two separate lessons! (Unless my district wants to give me double the prep time with pay, amiright? 😅) I needed to hear that piece of advice and encouragement. I definitely plan to keep it simple as much as possible until we get to a well-deserved summer break in June! 😎🌻⛱ Thank you for your videos: they have been a lifesaver! 👏

Hybrid(hyflex/concurrent teaching) is insane. You have got really good tips. Name your cart Googly in honor of the googly eyes! You have learned being you is the smartest option! I’m learning that everyday about myself! Making the lesson digital first is one easy and two it can easily be adjusted without making major changes! One tip I’m thinking is potentially filling you cart with incentives for in person learners so you aren’t going back and forth from your desk! The virtual learners can leave their screens to get the same incentive like a piece of candy (something small and then building the reward as it goes because these kids have been through the wringer)

My struggle is...we teach like you, in person and virtual students simultaneously, but...I have to teach math to three different groups and we teachers are the ones who change classes! I have to use a cart for this. The hardest part is getting my new class on the desk top computer/smart board and switching groups. I use a laptop to keep the Zoom connection. It has gotten better with practice but still time consuming. It takes to reconfigure the cameras, sound, bringing up websites, my Canvas module, and the document camera. It literally is like a juggling act! And don´t get me started with the small groups expectation my district has!

It's funny but I haven't struggled with hybrid teaching. I guess its because I teach graphic design classes so every student is supposed to be on a computer whether they are at home or just a few feet away. I also teach high school, so I can hold those students accountable if they never log in to our meeting platform or follow along to the lessons.

Same here in FL. Engagement for sure has been a struggle. I would suggest putting even more effort into building that sense of community amongst the online students with kids in the classroom. Allow them time to interact and connect with the in-person kids just for fun and to chat. Any downtime we have, I allow them to play on math sites where the kids can compete and message one another. You'd be surprised how isolated some of the online students feel :(
