I volunteered to get bumped from CHI to LAX and got $1,200 credit, which covered a trip to Europe. What I didn’t know… if they need multiple volunteers and they have to keep raising the incentive, all volunteers get the highest amount. Our flight started at $500, and kept going up. I had to stay overnight, so I also got a hotel room at a Hilton and food vouchers. It was great, but you have to be flexible.

I always bring an empty water bottle when I travel. Bottled water at the airport is so expensive. I’ve always been told that when researching flights, use an incognito browser. Lastly, if you’re not picky about the airline, sometimes flying with 2 different companies can save you $.

TSA precheck is so worth it even if you don't travel often. My last flight I traveled with just a carry on and you don't need to take out electronics or take your shoes off. So nice

I always wondered about the TSA precheck so maybe I'll give that a go! My favorite travel hacks are using the packing cubes AND the hand held weigher for your bag. I just stick the little hand held scale thing in the front of my bag and I always know that I'm good on weight when I check my bag. :)

Just remember when bringing your food onboard, try to not have it be "very loud smelling", and that's not a negative on it, but it your stuff's smells fills the plane once you open it....well that's not nice and also, if it has peanuts...well the flight crew might take it from you. Be ready for that. On the upgrades....make sure you're nice to the Gate Agent AND the Flight Crew. These people can upgrade you at their discretion. I was on a full flight from BOS to DFW....I hung around the gate area waiting to see what the Gate Agent would do, finally she called me over and said she didn't need my seat, but she did change my seat to First Class (well Business everywhere else).

Shelby, I appreciate your travel hacks video. I was wondering what you were saying about the overbooked flights scenario, and in that case what if you had a connecting flight? How do you? How would you deal with that? Are there generally other connecting flights, and similar times, or do you just have to have like an open window of when you arrive

Wear a hoodie with a front pouch. It works great to put stuff in while going through the airport or when your are on the plane. Also if you get cold on the plane, you can put the hood on.

The travel hack I use is booking through my company. If you work in corporate America you can probably do this too. I book my personal travel through my company's travel service (using my personal card) and the flight prices are often cheaper. There are other perks depending on the airline/hotel chain/rental car company. For Delta I get priority boarding, free priority seats, and higher chances of getting upgrades.

What is it with European train stations not having elevators? There's a shocking lack of accessibility. I may just take a backpack with wheels on my next trip since I will be in a bunch of different locations. I like rolling and compression bags more than vacuum bags where you have to carry a vacuum, but it totally makes sense for ski clothes.

I think Clear depends on what your home airport is. It has saved me a lot of time + it’s free if you have the Amex Platinum! Also if you’re getting TSA Pre, you might as well get Global Entry (because it includes it). The interview is hard to get, but you can do a quick one “on arrival” the next time you’re flying internationally.

If you don't have a window seat, you can use it as a back pillow (makes a massive difference on longer flights!). And if you forget a pillowcase, get a plastic bag from the airport and you can still use it as a back pillow or put it under the seat in front or in the overhead lockers (without getting it all dirty/subjecting it to potential bed bugs).

Wander looks amazing - will definitely check them out for future vacation house options. As far as travel hacks - if you are traveling with kids Southwest can be a great option once you get the companion pass (lots of travel hacking strategies out there to get it easily) which then lets you have a free companion for every flight you purchase for up to 2 years (depending on when you earn it). Plus you have all the points from getting the companion pass to use up… we are currently at 5 fully paid for flights for a family of 4 using this travel hacking strategy which has saved us thousands.

I LOVE precheck just for not having to take off my shoes or belt!! I've seen people go though security with their bare feet since they had to take their shoes off 🤢 One of my travel tips is to bring an empty reusable bottle, or at least an empty bottle through security. Most airports have water bottle fillers after security so you don't need to spend $5+ on a bottle of water!

This happened to me 1 time for the first time. Pre check did show up on the way back. From now on I’m going to check my boarding pass the night before and there is a number on the TSA website you can call or I’ve had people tell me they call the airline. On the TSA website it did say they don’t owe you precheck so I guess they technically don’t have to but I don’t know why they wouldn’t.
