Please continue doing these types of videos as long as you can 🫶🏼 help continue to share our Teochew culture and cherish these moments with him 🥹 My 94 year old Ama just passed away very recently, and I thankfully had a good amount of videos with her and so many memories with her. My best friend. I miss her dearly. Your Gong reminds me of my Gong, who passed in 2000. This is so beautiful. Sending love from SD, CA ❤

From your Gong's way of speaking, I guess he is from Chaoyang district of Shantou city, probably not far away from my home. Years ago, I was in Atlanta and had the pleasure to meet and chat with some teochew folks living in the south. Some of them know how to speak teochew well but never got the chance to visit teochew as they are the second-generation immigrants from VD or CBDA. I can tell that in their mind, DengSua(“塘山” Teochew) is always their hometown. Likewise, we always see you as one of us, Gaginang 家己人 :)

I'm from Germany and also have Teochew background - this video reminds me of the time spending with my grandparents, also speaking Teochew. There is almost no Teochew community in Germany - so happy to find this vlog! Your teochew dialect is exactly the same as we speak at home, so awkwardly familiar. Much love from Germany.

omg... As a Thai whose got grandpa and grandma as Teochew. It's really reminded me in the past when two of them speak together. Such a nostalgic trip down the memory lane. Where I'm in, probably the last gen of family to call all my relative in Teochew terms. All those lao gong, lao ma, aa gong, aa ma, aa jeck, aa pae, aa ee, aa guu, aa goo, smth like that. Down the line we just call them like that as a name. Call them the same as what my dad, mom call them. Not smth as grandpa, grandma, aunt, uncle, which are dynamically changing to each person relative to you anymore. And generation after mine are all calling their mom/dad/grandpa/grandma in all Thai terms. So in some day, all would be gone.

Thanks for sharing Katrina! My family in terms of ethnicity is much like yours. Same migrations as well, except of USA my family moved to Canada. Unfortunately my family is rather toxic and not healthily close. With the only exception being my Lao Ma. She was what developed the best of me. I appreciate you sharing this look into your family, as it shows a look into what a wholesome and healthy Teochew family looks like. Makes me think of my late Lao Ma, and gives me strength to continue striving for the best me I can be.

Wow so happy to see this video. My grandparents are also from 潮陽so i totally understood your gongs accent and I normally can’t understand Teochew because the pronunciation throws me off completely. I think there are videos on KZfaq to show how 潮陽 looks like today. From what I heard, the most popular TeoChew dishes today are beef balls and beef hotpot.

Hii it’s really cool to see you and your grandpa speak teochew. My grandparents from both sides are full teochew and I know that some of my grandparents siblings moved to the states and have children in New York (third cousins- Lam) and California. So I probably have distant relatives in the states 😂😂. I can only speak Cantonese and know some basic phrases like Le ho, gang hu de, chia meung Le Mia mit Gai. Just curious what’s your grandpas surname??

@@katrinastacie yes it was me!! ur stories and highlights gave me so much joy as I have never seen a family dynamic close to mine and also from the outside y’all seem quite close and supportive with each other, which is very adorable🥹 It has also inspired me to look for improvements in my own family dynamic as we are also close but sadly with a lot of disharmony as well, due to life circumstances and trauma. When I saw your family playing Jenga, I was so fascinated by your grandfather and the support of your family. Your Gong reminds me a lot of my father who’s quite old and physically not the fittest, so I’m now thinking about trying to play this game with him, as ur Gong did so well and seemed so happy 🥹 So thank you so much for sharing your family and teochew culture with the world.
