Hi Blackie... yep, I have the bug too... Grandpa bought me my first barlow when I was 4yo. I don't know who made it but it cost 25 cents and was in a gallon jar at the hardware store. I was always borrowing his or dad's to whittle so he got me my own. I carried it for years - used to take it to elementary school with me. Every boy had one and some of the girls. LOL Starting in 3rd grade I took my 410/22 gun to school to go hunting after school. (Our school bus had a gun rack behind the driver.) How things have changed. ... The most trouble a kid got into was carving in the desk top. I would not say I am a collector - more of a pocket knife horder - but I do give away cheap barlows. I recently bought a dozen white bone handled Roughrider barlows for 6.95 each (on sale). I have given all but two of them to friends, grandkids, etc. The barlow is an overlooked knife and I am trying to educate people to the value of a small pocket knife. Everyone seems to want a $300 folding kinfe made of super steel. If I had one I would never carry it or use it. If I lost it I would cry for a month... lol In fact one of my son-in-laws did loose a $200 Benchmade just two weeks after my daughter gave it to him... After that she told him he could replace it with a knife from the Dollar Store. LOL Ì too have a bag of pocket knives... I have never counted them but it is quite heavy. Every once in a while I that them out to clean, sharpen and oil them. I almost always use one of my barlows for whittling. My Roughrider is my favorite, but I also like my Schrade. My every day carry has been a Swiss Army Knife (Hiker) since 1978 when I first found it in a little shop in Wiesbaden Germany. That knife will just not wear out. I have bought all of the men and boys in my family one and my daughters. 😊 Well, enough rambeling... time for church... Later.....

My first knife was a Kamp King "boy scout" knife. Later, on our last family vacation before leaving home we took a trip to Yellowstone. My Dad bought me a victonox explorer. I still have and carry it. I also carry other knives - a buck or leatherman on my belt. I also collect old "Frontier" folders - a Imperial brand. Along with Case and others. Your philosophy of using cheaper knives is in line with mine. I love the Rough Rider/Marbles lines that SMKWs puts out. Good video!

...........Great story, Blackie......For years in my life I thought I might have some kind of syndromism..if that is a word.....as to the number of knives I just couldn't live without at one time or another. My collection is varied, just like yours. Most are inexpensive but all have a special meaning or memory attached. A good way to get over feeling guilty when I feed my knife addiction is to buy another for my kids and grandkids......Thank you for showing me I am not the only one who has bunches of favorite knives......I usually carry at least three at the time. A favorite is a Rough Rider two blade folding hunter.......a gift from a friend......ATB....

Great story. My EDC is a SAK also but I do have a Sodbuster for food prep when it's just a picknick or so. I also have the Opinel and the Svord (peasant knives). These single blade knives are often easier to clean after food prep. Just for the looks I like the Wrangler model with the clip, sheepfoot and spey blade. One of the guys that made bushcraft big was Les Hiddins (Bush Tucker Man) and he alsmost always just used his Wrangler for the small tasks.

I had a friend that worked at UPS in the shop. They use to trade pocket knives by reaching in their pocket, hold out both hands, then drop the pocket knife from your right hand into his left hand. The person you traded with would do the same thing. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but it was all done in good faith. People nowadays in this "dog eat dog" world would bring junk to trade, trying to get over on someone. And they would never try and fix something themselves. Your preaching to the choir my friend, dam shame if you ask me. Helping others helps you, but we are talking ancient history. I had a collection of pocket knives, about 20 of them just because you use to come across a good deal so often. Garage sales, auctions, or just seeing one in a store when you had a pocket full of money... lol Thanks Blackie for bringing back some good memories

Hi Blackie, I remember being a young boy on the farm and seeing others knives. I became interested in knives and saved up to buy a Camillus #4 lockback knife with leather pouch from our local small-town hardware store. It took a long time to save up the 20 some-odd dollars for it and I remember asking the store owner not to sell them all until I could pay for one. He laughed and said he would keep one for me. I have been addicted to knives ever since. I'd love to be able to buy one now but I settle for my Buck 110's. Thanks for this video!

I have to get my wife to watch this she thinks I'm the only one in the world who has a pocket knife collection! Like so many of you my dad gave me my first one only mine came from Pep Boys. Same deal on cardboard next to the cash register. Some kind of fake mother of pearl 2 blade pocket knife. Got a cub scout knife when I was in Cubs and a Kamp King when I was a scout. I'm originally from Philadelphia and we carried pocket knives to high school through the 60s. Not unusual back then even for an eastern city. About a 1970 I bought myself one of those Imperial Barlow's and I still have it. Been collecting ever since with dry spells depending on how bad employment was. Those days it was Bucks and Pumas where what I craved. My latest kick before I retired was Case Knives and all the different styles and handle materials. I guess it gets to be an obsession when you have more knives than you could ever possibly use in some reasonable pocket rotation. Thanks Blackie, made my day.

When I was young 1950's and early 60's I didn't think any knife was throwaway! Your point is well taken. Picked up a few Ulster Camp knives for my sons in their late 20's. I kept the Camillus Cutlery, Camillus, NY bone handled knife for myself. Must be from the late 40's -early 50's. I remember the older style can-opener, similar to your Rough Rider with the std, but no stud, a separate action of the blade runs parallel to the spear and has a foot on it about 3/8" inch from the end of the spade. Shown it to many people my age and they say that, they never seen that type. Often these old knives are sloppy and need a little tightening, I've taken to giving the pin through the bolster a good wack or two. When the blade wobbles laterally you need a knife smith to fix it. I'm not set up to fix that.

When I was fresh out of college I lived for short time in WV and farm communities. Those folks when purchasing a new knife would wrap up the handle and stick the blade in the dirt for an overnight for a day and claimed that it helped the steel. does anyone know any metalergical reason if it works. Victorinox does not make a Wood Carving knife that has two carving blades, a saw, and a large roughing blade. Blades that have 58 or better Rockwell hardness or 440 or better stainless steel. Just three slots (not sure what they are called) handles. that are rounded for comfort, with locking blades. Folded no more than 3 1/2 inches long. If all the carvers out there will unite and keep bugging Vicky about it, I am sure they will listen.

the U.S. pocket knife often called the demo knife was issued to all the services..at some times marines had them marked like your knife...as did a few other services..usually those were sold thru the px..the issue knife just said U.S...they are simply a version of the old camp knife (boyscout pocket) knife..since so many in the army came up as scouts the knife was adopted in the all steel version for troops

It baffles me that now they are pushing to ban knives as well, is this still America, land of the free, home of the brave?
