Good info the greatest info that ive ever had was by following the Parrot ploy plan (just google it) - I found it the no.1 treatment i've followed.

My first piece of advice to new bird owners is to understand that birds are little and don't need as much food as you think they do! When I first brought my blue front home, I got so scared that she wasn't eating enough, when in reality she was eating plenty for her size. Because of this, I was giving her extra treats in order to make sure she was eating enough, but all this did was make her not want to eat her healthy food. Now that I've quit doing that, she eats all of her breakfast and dinner and is maintaining her weight perfectly fine. It is also important to remember that not everything is going to go perfectly; you are going to get bit, you are going to form a bad habit or two, and you are going to make mistakes. That's okay! What's important is that you know how to fix those things. I've made countless errors in the year that I've owned a large parrot, and they were all fixable with a little bit of training. Don't give up as soon as you run into a problem!

It's funny you mentioned the food thing! We did the same thing! I occassionally over-do it once in awhile. Our avian vet told us that when you give like 4 or 5 walnuts to your bird for a treat, it is like them eating a box of twinkies: it's over-feeding on the junk and it is soooooo not good! I stick by that thought process in order to make sure I don't over feed anymore! You learn as you go, right?

0:50. Yes very important. I know a heartbreaking story of a macaw that was clipped and trained to be outside. But the owner didn't had him on a leash or anything, because clipped birds can't flight? The owner was wrong and 1 week after the bird turned 1 year old, it flew away because it got scared, and it was windy, so he did a long flight. The owner found him later, the bird had blood on his head, a broken wing and one of his feet cut of. They thing it collided with a train because they found him at a train track. They could not do anything for the bird anymore and had to put him down. So please, pay attention to your birds and remember that even if clipped, they can fly!

Congrats! I Me too, I’m getting a cockatiel and a Sun Conure. I’m excited and nervous. I have to get ANOTHER cage...lol. I’m moving them to a larger room. I will have 4 birds, two budgies, sun conure and a cockatiel. Scary times.

I am a biology student and one of the things I took away is that almost everything alive has a basic what’s in it for me mentality even plants simbiosis for example isn’t charity or friendship its a business transaction

If you get a carpeted house, replace the carpet and make sure it doesn't have Teflon in the new carpet.

We are 6 days into our very first bird. We rescued a 23 yr old African Grey named Echo. We did a lot of binge watching BirdTricks, research before getting her. We started her on the seasonal diet and pellet from a black sunflower seed only diet. And have already seen a change in her behavior for the better. She is accepting of the clicker training but she does still seem to do alot of "bite" behavior. Very different from just investigating with her beak. Trying to break that habit. She doesn't seem to be overwhelmed when she does it but we are still learning each other.

I am always the one saying”turn the tv down the birds are sleeping”. Or “take it to your room the birds need sleep”. I can’t tell you how many times I have nagged about the birds needed quiet time for quality sleep. Thank you for talking about this!

My advice for new parronts Always learn! Keep learning! Learn both sides of the argument so you can make an informed decision. For example, I feed pellets and a chop (the season feeding system in fact!) for my Meyer's parrot, but I add seed in for my genetic mess of a cockatiel. Some people say Birds eat seeds in the wild, so I feed seed! Which is true, birds would eat seeds in the wild! My thinking on the topic is that we don't live in the wild, and many birds don't need seeds included as a regular part of the diet. Seed mixes are also "dead" seeds, meaning they have been stored and aren't ready to propagate, unlike seeds in the wild which quickly start the process of becoming a new plant. Always keep learning ❤️

Hey!! I got a new bird, a cockatiel, from a rescue situation. He wasn’t ever tamed. My current goal is to be able to pet him- after roughly 9 days he started to learn “step up!” I thought it’d take a month or something for that, and I’m very happy with it. This channel along with many others I’ve been following for a long while, and this video could not have come to my notifications at a more perfect time. I wanted to comment and say thank you! You’re really cool :D!

That's quick progress. I got an untamed three-year-old cockatiel and it took over a month for it to want to perch on my finger. It will still only step up if there's a treat involved. I guess it probably takes a lot of training for them to want to do it without one.

I've had bird for years since I was a kid, and I've been have a bay couple of days with one of my babies. As soon as you said its complete normal to feel overwhelmed and confused I just felt so relieved all of a sudden. Its so nice to have people tell you its okay sometimes 😌.

Thank you so much for this video. Although I got my first bird over 2 years ago(now I have 3) I feel like I'm just begining to 'get it' on some things. And yes , I've had some bad advice. The bird store where I bought my "hand raised" parakeet told me "to hold it until it surrendered." I did this for a week, even though it felt wrong. It has now taken almost a year for him to even start to trust me. He also hassles my other parakeet and I believe his attitude changed after the 'holding sessions.' Also the 60/40 rule. My husband wasn't really into the birds. They were "my thing", so when I got my conure he really hardly said "Hi" to him. Now my Conure actually flys at and bites my him and of course my husband now has no desire to spend time around him. At this point, I keep them separated by using my bird room, but I know it's going to take a concerted effort to repair the relationship and I wish I had started differently. Also, I enjoy having your birds candidly in your videos. It helps me to see normal interactions between a knowledgeable person and her birds. Thank you! I'm learning so much from Bird Tricks!!

Next month im getting a blue and gold macaw she’s beautiful and really healthy now I’m just waiting till she’s ready. I’m so nervous! I’ve worked with plenty of different birds at conservation parks and zoo and I study zoology so I’ve got the study and second hand experience down but I know having your own is going to be completely different. This video and all your videos are really beneficial for those who do not have the experience or knowledge prior to getting their bird

Wow! When you first started talking, everything you said also pertains to having a baby! I’m a retired lactation consultant/La Leche League Leader and used to do a lot of parenting education. We talked about all the confusing information out there & trusting your mothering instincts-if it feels wrong, it probably is. Your video is full of great information. And I’m really jealous of your gorgeous weather. I’m in Houston & it is a swamp after all the rain from hurricane beta.

My daughter is on her way to Houston as I type this. She is flying to Richmond, VA to see if she and my 2 granddaughters would be happy living there. She hates Louisiana. My wife and I are beginner learners - with both an Alexandrian and Indian ring neck - both 17 weeks old. Amazingly intelligent companions - They're learning and we're learning together. I cannot get over just how many 'tells' they have with behavior. Your tip about self serving creatures - very valuable - avoiding pain or seeking pleasure! much like humans! My wife is a psychologist and I an emergency nurse - they are really bringing light into our sometimes dark lives :) much love from Down under!

I have been struggling to get my young lovebird to transition to eating vegetables and pellets. The best tip I got today was that it takes time and I got some good ideas how to serve it. Has a new bird owner I don't know what to expect and necessarily when to expect it. These videos really help!

I'm a huge Lovebird fan! What species do you have? Be patient; it took me over a month to get my peach face to even touch a pellet. They're hard-headed little rascals!

@@jamssnana4084 oh boy are they stubborn and hard-headed! He is a peach face but he is yellow and periwinkle, almost 4 months old. He shows no interest in fresh fruits and vegetables, but I did get him to start eating pellets mixed with his seeds. The trick was to get a very small pellet. His name is Tiki!

I was ignorant and thought my new, four month old Congo African Grey was safe outside because he was clipped. I didn't realize how much he had grown out and what he was capable of. He got startled and took off. It took four days to get him back and I was fortunate. He is now 24 years old. He remains fully fighter within the home but think I need to train for flight return just in case he should get out again. You can treat older birds new tricks. Thank you so much.

I love seeing your birds free flying around your yard, they look so happy and healthy getting exercise! I want to recall train mine but I would still be so scared to take them outside in fear they wouldn’t listen to me and never come back! Another tip I liked from your video was letting birdie join you when you’re eating healthy snacks.

I adopted a 19 year old male senegal. Quite challenging but I love him. I feel badly for re homing poor baby. Imagine how they feel. He is stick trained so very great. I’m glad I got him

I've had my new Green Cheek Conure (I've never owned a bird in my life!!😵💫 )almost 2 months ago and I can tell he was mainly seed fed. He will barely eat anything else and I have tried everything. But I have also been making chop with different fruits and vegetables and not focusing on one veggie/fruit goal at a time. I'm really excited to do the "30 days to eat a carrot" approach. I really feel this will really help me focus on what veggies and fruits my Conure really favors so he can live his best life. Thank you for your advice!!❤

I got my bird to eat carrots after she saw my rats eating them. She got really jealous that I was sharing with the rats and now she loves to show us how she’s eating her carrots

I have a 16 year old Sun Conure who would fly to follow me through the open gates of hell. He comes with me literally everywhere; to music festivals, bars, mountain biking, backcountry snowboarding, the grocery store, Bed, shower, hikes, road trips. In 16 years he has gotten lost only once. On a very windy day he flew up above the treeline and was swiftly carried away by strong wind currents. Lost my voice out calling for him with all my neighbors and didn't find him until the following afternoon. He was enthralling a group of college kids on a picnic blanket and clowning for laughs when I found him. he was acting like everything was great. Check the wind before you walk outside with birds, I was lucky I got him back safely. She didn't exaggerate about strong Wind. Sunny was swept over a mile away from the house. Bird people remark how strong of a flyer he is too. ndoor birds don't have the muscles or experience to fight a sustained wind.

Is the head bobbing a conure thing? My pineapple cheek's mannerisms are the same way. Always has the same mischievous look and also velcroed to me too. Lol Also I know all Birdtricks fans like myself watched this and felt better when she said "or as a refresher" because we were going to watch it anyway, even though many of us are not new bird owners 😂 love you Birdtricks! 🤘❤

Absolutely with the food!! I’m a fur baby mom of dogs, and they get NO table scraps. Ever. Because I LOVE them, and people food isn’t dog food! Or Bird food.

I agree that avian forums are so judgmental. I used to go on forums alot then I realized how toxic the environment is. There are always a few people on there who are so judgmental and they make it seem like they are always right. Anytime there is a newcomer who asks questions they just start to grill him/her. Its more of a place where these people feel good about themselves than a place where people actually talk about birds.

I have found a couple of FB groups that are private where you are not allowed to be mean, judgy, or just an all-around-jerk to those who are looking for advice or want to share something that they found interesting or the found out to work or be a mistake. Maureen McCohen has a parrot page that has wonderful people on there that are so helpful!

I really love seeing the birds in your videos it’s so cool seeing them interact with humans over an extended timeframe other than just showing the animal I’ve just recently started being intrigued by birds and the possibility of having 1 as a pet.seeing the behavior is definitely great so I can see more of what I would be getting into seeing as they’re very complex animals, I love your channel.

Jill Weiss we inherited a Galah and cockatoo ( 35 years then were kept in small cages with only sunflower seed :(( ..After two months they are now eating apple and carrot 😁

My advice for new owners of birds - don't be afraid of your bird. And for birds with a new human - give them a break, they're only human. Your sun conures are sooo pretty.

I am going to be a new bird owner and I have relied on your channel and I am so glad I found you and right now to train I am practicing on my grandmas bird when I change her water and clean the bottom where her poop is catched and she is a African grey and sometimes I am scared to change her water because I think she is going to bite me but I have learned to read her body language and realized she is just watching and being aware of what is going in in her cage and that I have watched your videos all the time I now know the most important things to do to take care of a bird and I am so thankful

My advice is not to buy the first bird you see, but to go out with the intention that you will find the right bird for you. I can not say how you will know because it is a special moment and will be unique. Wow, your mom's garden looks like it has filled out so much! I always enjoy seeing it, it's absolutely beautiful. Such a great place to have the birds, looks so peaceful. And ohhhhhh, the girls acting like babies was quite possibly the most adorable thing! I just wanted to squish them ❤️😍❤️😍❤️😍 next to Bondi walking on the ground and exploring, not sure why, but I think it's so cute when birds walk on the ground hahaha.

Jamieleigh, you and your flock crack me up! I have been watching your videos, started to introduce pellets to my 37 year old Amazon (he's been with me for a month), but you're right, it is SO overwhelming and I really don't know where to begin. Diet? Sleep? Hand taming? He's not overly fond of the touch training and its very "bite-y". Wish I had ALL of your knowledge and time to watch ALL the videos!

Thank you for mentioning that getting frustrated is normal and it is going to happen. I have a 3 month conure, I have no idea what I am doing, but the first thing I did is looking for was to change the diet. Just like any other animal the commercialized diets are never good. Thank you for your website, I am learning a lot, I have bought your cookbook and so much more. You are awesome and glad I found you.

DUDE. I mean, Jamie... I got cockatiels a few months ago. We took them too this self proclaimed "bird trainer" just to have their beaks trimmed and nails trimmed. I am so glad I just do my own research because he straight up said to grab the bird and hold it to your chest so he can hear your heartbeat and know you aren't a predator. I'm so hoping to come to one of your training groups in the future.

I got an Indian Ringneck 11 days ago. I was told he is 8 months old and hasn’t been handled much. He will now come out when I open his cage and let’s me put him back in by stepping up on a perch. He is taking treats from me but still moves away quickly. I’m happy with his progress so far. I decided it was a good idea to get him comfortable taking treats from me before I start target training. Slow and steady for my blue baby 💙

Always had small sized parrots but 2 years ago Igot an amazon parrot. We're best friends and now I want to welcome a macaw in the family. Double cages, of course. But what about jealousy? And what if they won't get along together?

You are simply amazing. We have a 3mth old ringneck which we've handreared. We will certainly follow your advice on introducing veggies. Please do a video on how to get your bird to fly freely without flying away. She flies freely around the house but to venture outdoors would be too risky. Love your videos.

I have a 4 month old green cheeked conure. We started with target training and he loves and responds well to it. Next we're doing step up. He loves my hand so that way we're in a good place. I rarely put him on my shoulder. Usually if I'm walking around the house or doing laundry I'll put him on my shoulder. I hope to some day soon have a fantastic relationship like you do with your flock. We work on ours every day. I'm wishing that the time will come when I contact you about free flight. I so long for my boy to fly outside. He gets outside time in his big condo we have outside on the back patio for him. Looking forward to much more tips and tricks. I have several bird species but just picked a white eyed conure he was terrified of me at the parrot store but I felt after hours working with him I took him home and he is the most loving parrot I’ve ever owned. Need little training
