On February 16 2022 had my left leg amputated below the knee due to a spider bite 6 days earlier. Talked to some social workers at the hospital (14 weeks in due to septicemia) all these people although well intentioned had 2 legs, I live in Broken Hill 1100ks west of Sydney not a lot of facilities here so I watch this channel regularly to get an insight to other people's problems and fixes. Dear One, Please read my comment above. I have been a nurse for many years. The primal part of your Brain doesn't know the difference between now and before the amputation. Your Brain is trying to alert you to send comfort to your feet. May I gently suggest that you get a towel and a soft blanket and heating pad or hot water bottle. First take a bath in warm water. Imagine how good that warm water will feel on your feet. Keep focusing on sensation of warmth on your lims and gradually imagine your feet warm. Reach down and pretend to massage your feet. Imagine massaging your feet and the pain or coldness leaving. Tell your Brain " Oh thank you for telling me my feet need a bath" . Sit or lay down and go through the motions of drying off your feet. Imaging drying of your feet with a warm towel from the dryer. Actually do this. Get a warm towel and wrap your limbs and dry your feet. Yes I know your feet are in Heaven. But your Brain needs you to do this. So by Faith continue to imagine your warm feet being warm and dried off by the towel. Touch the end of your existing limb and dry your feet off. This takes practice but if you imagine this soon your Brain will believe you. It takes practice. Then you wrap a heating pad, hot water bottle or heated blanket around your legs and your feet. Tell your Self how warm and comfy the warm blanket feels on your feet. Imagine your feet warm and comfy. Your feet are still spiritually with you. Your Brain is still sending you signals to help them. You can also pray and ask Jesus to touch you and Heal you. Look up Vagal nerve stimulation and Havening exercises on KZfaq. Read my above comments. I am praying for you. I am wishing you Clarity and Comfort and Peace and Joy on your Healing Journey. Hold the Lantern and Light The Way. I am sending Love and Hugs from Washington State USA, Jeanne of In Loving Hands Counseling

So.. i know that its not the same by any stretch of the imagination, but here's my story: I used to be paralyzed. This is back in 2011, 2012 and most of 2013 due to a spinal injury that still affects me to this day (although I'm able to walk again, i still get random shooting pains up and down my legs). It's weird but I used to get what i used to call "phantom limb pain" all the time. Like yes, my legs were physically there... But the damage to my spinal cord was so bad that the doctors said that i would never walk again. Every now and then (for absolutely no reason at all, i might add) i would get this god-awful feeling of EXTREME cold in my legs. This could happen even during the heat wave in the middle of July. And sometimes my legs would be on fire. It seriously felt like I had submerged my leg into liquid hot and magma or something like that. And there was absolutely zero escape from those weird sensations. It took me 2 years before my spinal cord was finally healed enough for me to gain some actual temperature sensation back... And an additional 18 months of daily physical therapy before I could move my legs enough to TRY to stand... And a year longer before I could walk a few steps without support again. I'm almost fully recovered but i still get those weird shooting temperature pains every ao often. Long story short: nerve pain is weird, and I'm sorry that you have to deal with it. Hopefully you are able to find a way to get through it ❤

I have spinal cord compression and am trying to get surgery before the damage leads to me losing the use of my legs. I have nerve damage too, and I also get freezing cold feelings in my legs, which has gotten especially worse recently in conjunction with my spine getting worse. I have compression from cysts both in my lumbar spine where my sciatic nerves are, and in my thoracic spine where nerves responsible for both my arms AND legs are, too. My upper back has been getting super bad and that's what I'm tackling with a neurosurgeon first. When listening to Jo describe her pain, it rang this same bell in my brain. I want to go to college to become a neuroscientist and am also considering medical school for neurology. I'm 25. I've had stuff wrong with my nervous system all my life. My theory here is that the issue being overlooked for Jo is some sort sort of residual affect the amputation or original injury had on the nerves higher up in her leg, or in her spine. It's like losing that limb has had a permanent affect on her spine or something, and that's causing this pain. I want to research the spine's relationship to the rest of the body and the central nervous system's awareness of the whole body and its ability to detect when something is amiss. I think it extends far past letting us know when we're sick or wounded. I think the nervous system, behind the brain, may be more complex than we realize and it processes a lot more information than we thought it did. I don't know if that makes any sense, I've never had to explain this before, but I hope it makes at least a little bit more sense. I don't know, I'm tired and going off on a tangent. I need to get some sleep.
@dnellbuck1896

@@NyoomMonstersounds logical to me, and interesting. I wonder if when a limb gets amputated if the nerves are left at a "dead end" and if there may be some way to complete the circuit. And that's why phantom pain exists is that our brain knows how long that nerve should be and now it's not so it is trying to figure that out.

I can sort of see how one's brain might interpret lack of signal as cold (given that you can go numb from cold, and so there's a correlation in your brain between the two events. Not sure how your other foot being cold makes the non-existent one feel warm though 🤷. Sorry you have to deal with this!

i once had half my tongue numbed from a dental procedure (because i was dumb and accidentally licked the area with anesthetic gel on it) and when i went to drink ice water later, the numb side felt warm. i can only assume the brain assumes it should feel things symmetrically, and when something goes against that expectation it overcompensates? @sheona7693 , Thank you so much for your kind words. I find that positive affirmation, prayer, and saying Bible verses out loud, if done with an open heart and with pure Love as the intention, are very Healing. What I mean by that is we can quietly pray to Jesus Christ of Nazerath in our Hearts and He will answer us. We can think thoughts and talk to Him aloud or in our minds and Jesus will respond. A gentle but firm positive affirmation of a scripture verse is very powerful. I do not mean preaching at or condemning people. The Holy Spirit can come and Heal even non Believers and lead them to Christ. A nurse or caregiver with a Loving soothing presence and a prayerful spirit can do wonders. When I went to Nursing School in the 1980s the Older Professors still taught this in a matter of fact way. No one doubted this. Go read the writings of Florence Nightinggale, the founder of modern Nursing. She taught that temperament, composure and Healing intention of the Nurse was essential to Healing. She interviewed prospective Nurses and chose them based on their character and their soothing healing presence. Sadly, Now days the focus of many who enter the profession is money making and they have a back biting gossipy nature , pulling down the people around them. We need to pay Nurses well and promote those who have a truly healing cooperative spirit. I had just stumbled upon this video and wanted to share my experiences with others who may need help and Healing. Jesus Loves you and He is waiting for you to ask Him to help. Whatever your situation , He cares. His Holy Spirit will give you Wisdom if you ask. I am thinking of you and praying for your healing of Body, Mind and Spirit. Hugs, Jeanne

Years ago I read an article by a nurse's who was explaining her experiences during the WWII era. I remember her talking about phantom pains that amputees experience. The thing that seemed to work was to respond to the area as though it was still really there. If it itches, scratch it. If it has a stiff muscle, rub it. So, if it is cold, put a heating pad on it. Treat the nonexistent foot as though it really exists. Answer the signal. Quit trying to be logical. Then, the phantom feelings just stop. The brain finally gets the message. Also check the air pressure where you are at. Nerve damage and storm fronts are never a good combination.

I know everyone is different, so trying to make direct comparison's case to case is wrong; that being said 36 years later I'm still catching myself trying to use it like it was there. And anyone who says nerve pain isn't real can kiss my ass. I wish I had an answer for you Jo, I really do; all I can do is WI-FI you a big hug of support.

I have not had a leg amputated but do have Restless Legs Syndrome (Ekbom Disease). In my extensive research of RLS have discovered that, since RLS is a neurological condition, if a person suffering from RLS has one or both legs amputated, not only do they suffer from Phantom Limb Pain, it is possible that they can also suffer from Phantom RLS! Yikes, the brain just doesn't give up, does it? Hope you find relief and that your Phantom Pain gradually fades, Jo.

I lost my legs 50+ yrs ago as a 8 yr old child, the Dr told me that the brain is the best computer in the world but it has a nerve system like a Victoria railway and if it hasn’t had a return message from leg track in a long time it sends a message down the wire asking ‘what’s going on’ & at the amputated end all the wires are just cut & short circuiting against each other 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧

I know how you feel, I'm 3 months from my AK amputation and I always have the sensation that my foot (that's gone doesn't exist) is asleep. I have the sensation of pins and needles stabbing my non-existent. I do the mirror therapy but it seems that it's not working. Carry on Jo

Hugs. I can sympathize. When I had Guillain-Barre, one of my first obvious symptoms (as my immune system started stripping myelin from my nerves) was my feet and hands feeling brutally cold. It stayed with me for a while, I eventually learned to sleep through it. (Memory is not that great on details once I was in the hospital, eventually I lost that sensation.) Well, I still had my feet and hands, but I still couldn’t do anything about it. Nerves just went crazy.

My lovely friend, I have numbness in my feet from neuropathy, and almost every night my toes feel like they are freezing, even in the summer. Weirdly, if I tuck my toes into the interior of my knees, it might go away. Totally a mind thing. The brain is a capricious thing that doesn't always work for our best interests.

I have a numb foot due to neuropathy and I know what you are talking about about. I can't feel anything else in that foot but it will feel like my toes are about to fall off. I use a heating pad, not necessarily on my foot, but just up on my ankle and calf where the feeling starts again. It usually helps. If that doesn't then I will wrap the heating pad around my foot and sit there looking at it. I can't feel the warmth, but I can see it and I can sometimes get my brain to realize my foot is not freezing. 🫤. Prayers to you and thank you for sharing your journey. 💓

I completely sympathize with you. I get sharp pain in my "nonexistent" left foot at random times also. It SUCKS soooo bad. nothing can help with it either. I'm told, "take Tylenol", or "elevate it", and even, "put an ice pack on it." You just have to bear through it. I find screaming......doesn't help either lol. But I get it and agree with you.

It's like when my nerves in a localized area decide "Oh my God, we're burning alive, it's burning it's burning it's burning, oh it hurts!" And there's nothing physically wrong that anyone can fine. I just got physically and/or emotionally stressed. Now it's ✨️Pain Time✨️

I’m sorry you have to deal with that. I feel your pain, literally. What gets me is how does my nonexistent right foot feel it when I accidentally step in a deep puddle of cold water? It’s moments like those when the cat has to give up my heating pad, so I can wrap it around my stump

BK amputee here. This hasn't happened in quite a few years but I used to get really sharp phantom pains in my leg that felt like I was being electrocuted. They'd last for several seconds then return randomly, maybe every five minutes. This would go on half the night. It was exhausting and not nearly as much fun as it sounds.

My dad suffered phantom pain in both legs. Both were amputated above the knee, but he would get shooting pains that felt like it was coming from his feet . That is why so many amputees do not believe that their limb is missing

Wow, that's incredible that you still have to deal w/ such powerful phantom symptoms. I'm really sorry you're so uncomfortable, I hope it goes away soon! Does phantom pain last forever, or does your brain eventually reset w/ the new nervous system wiring & stop making you so uncomfortable so often?? Thanks for sharing this, you're teaching ppl a lot!❤️👍🏻

See a therapist who uses Emotional Freedom Techniques. Every amputee who ever showed up in my office had an issue like this. I used the same treatment that I used for all PTSD variations, and it always worked. I know that it is hard to believe, but it is true.

My step father-in-law had one missing leg and those phantom feelings drove him wild. But a massage on the stump with Nivea cream helps two things. That set off cut off nerves that create displaced pain can also possibly be relaxed by exploring the pressure points on your thigh. (I’ve got massage therapy training.)
