Today I’m sharing with you my art journal from 2020. It’s full of lots of drawing that - at the time - I thought were riddled with tons of mistakes. After a lot of personal growth since then, though, I now have to see those “mistakes” as much more than that. Join me during this flip-through so we can discuss the importance of making mistakes as well as the value in the practice of letting go.

I only recently discovered your channel and have been binge watching your past videos. I have to say, you have a wonderful, calm, excellent voice for video - I could listen to you all day. Thanks so much for this peek into your journal life. I appreciate your continued sharing, gentle opinions and inspirational drawing ideas. I've recently retired and am striving to get back to a regular art practice. I've attempted art journaling before but never lasted very long - this journal inspires me to try again in the new year with a new focus on a "just do it" attitude and have one place to experiment and practice my various interests. Thanks again for all your work in sharing your ideas, skills, and projects. It's much appreciated.

That's wonderful! Journaling can be daunting at first. It can feel like a lot of work, a lot of expectations. But if you approach it with a healthy mindset, it can be so fun.

Stop doubting yourself. You are a wonderful artist. I am so excited for your next live. I find myself seeking out your videos for inspiration and ideas. I love the pages that have blank spots. Sometimes it is about what you dont say.......keep up the wonderful videos.

I’m glad you find inspiration in my videos! I try to share the negative emotions because I want other artists to see that they aren’t ones who feel like their work isn’t good enough. 💜

I really needed to hear this! A lot if times, when I make a mistake, I call it happy accident, because when I try to fix the mistake, it usually ends up better than what I originally intended. But there are other times where I just really messed up and berate myself. I do need to learn to just let it go and move on. Thank you!

I have a whole DRAWER full of drawings and doodles that I shoved aside because they weren't 'perfect' or finished or good enough at the time. I recently rediscovered them when I cleaned out that old dresser. And I thought, WOW, those are actually GOOD! And I couldn't even see the faults or the flaws or why I thought I should hide them. Self-doubt and self-criticism whack us over the head telling us that only perfect is good enough. NO! Any try, no matter how amateur or imperfect, is good enough!

the past 2.5 years being sequestered, mentored, unsubscribing from innumerable perceptions ii was coached to let go of, has been/ is a subtle-to-major fine tunement. Repurposing mis-takes artwise while not recycling mindsets that no longer serve any purpose, has a freefall quality w/o a net(work). Some transformational discernments replaced erroneous-believed-as-true ideas. a burn pile helped at one point significantly to forge ahead & not turn into a pillar of salt by looking back. music, movement, art, writing...are not crutches...but tools in mastering principles many of which are not taught but caught. your shares reach all of us beyond teaching to the heart...ty.

Beautiful journal! And wise words. If I made a mistake or didn’t like what I was doing I felt I’d failed, hid it away and stopped trying that particular thing. Then I’d find it sometime and feel like a failure all over again. And I have so many unfinished things! (ADHD doesn’t help with that) What you said really hit home, made me rethink a lot of things…thank you ❤

I draw, and paint in old books, over the text. I feel like there is less pressure. It’s easy to keep them with me to practice while I am on. A break, or waiting. I adore this video. Here’s to the strange little journals we create is all sorts of ways. I declare today Strange Journal Day! I am celebrating by picking up where I left off from the last time I used a journal, and making some kind of journal to keep with me - so I can always capture an idea, or write about what matters in the moment. What inspiration you have gifted me! Sending brave, creative, risk free, joyful thoughts to you and all your followers. We can do hard things- learning IS hard, but always emotionally profitable.

Thank you for sharing a bit of yourself during the craziness of the early covid years. I started doing watercolors at that time. I think it was a period of stay home and escape. The unknown was so palatable. I love journal flip throughs. Your was done at a perfect pace and even though you talked about mistakes you never once pointed one out. LoL, I appreciated that as I was just enjoying and getting ideas.

Betsi, we are ALL our own worst critics, but when I look at your art journal, all I can think is "how BEAUTIFUL!" I have watched a couple dozen of your videos so far, and I am learning so much. You have a wonderful, soothing voice, and immense talent. Your work is inspiring to me, and I am drawing like crazy! My reasons? Mental health? Yes. Improving my drawing? Yes. Desire to earn from drawing? Yes. THANK YOU so much for sharing your talents with us. All the best for the year ahead. 🥳🎉

I used to feel this way more while working in a journal as I experiment a lot so often feel uncertain, but after some time from it I look back and like much of what I've created or at least I've learned some important lessons from my experiments. I now try hard not to judge so much as I'm creating. I am easily bored so I have sort of a "what would happen if I did this?" approach which of course leads to many mistakes by also some pretty cool stuff. I have to think of it as Art play- how can one make mistakes while playing? Thanks so much for sharing. I love your channel.

This is very interesting. The problem of perfectionism is so bad.. I've decided that there is no such thing as a wrong line. Even if I messed up and the lines aren't "exactly" like I want them to be (and they mostly aren't). My goal is to relax. Just zen-out and just let it flow. Hopefully, with more practice there will be less mistakes, but that is in the future :)

Hi Betsy your drawings are absolutely beautiful! I try to draw every day and still haven’t finished one as I always start in pencil. I’m happy to hear that it takes time. Cuz my husband commented the other day…..Are you ever going to finish one? I don’t have a lot of time to draw each day. I get up at 4am just so I have my drawing and KZfaq time. Thank you. I love listening and watching your videos. ❤

It's such a privilege to peek at someone else's creative journey. Thanks for sharing! Very inspiring. Btw, where did you get those gorgeous tapes with geometric designs? Did you draw on the tape yourself? They are lovely, such a respectful way to add things to a journal. Not that plain adhesive is "bad"; just that I like the added celebration of the beautiful tape. Take care and keep well.
@betsi_jae

Thank you! I don't really remember where I found the tape, but I'm pretty sure I must have gotten them on Amazon. If you would like to find some, I suggest searching for fun geometric pattern washi tape rolls. There are tons and tons of sellers offering them on Amazon and elsewhere. They're fairly affordable and fun to use.

Let's face it. Doodling is NOT an exact art, if there even is such a thing. In my opinion you can't make a mistake drawing with doodles and shapes. Sometimes when I'm doing a Zentangle if I draw a line totally out of place in a particular tangle, I just use my white Gelly Roll to fix it and I keep going. By the time the rest of the drawing is done and shaded the mistakes and flaws become invisible.

I don't think even art is an exact art. Even science isn't an exact art 😊.

Good point- science evolves as more information is discovered. The art comes from within- the passion, curiosity, joy, pain, despair, elation, love- Yes learn from it and let what doesn’t work go. But looking back is also enlightening.
