I’ve always been a big fan of Rickenbackers thanks to guys like Paul McCartney, Geddy Lee, Cliff Burton, Lemmy and Chris Squire, so your ‘75 4001 looks awesome and the story was really cool as well

Great vid. Though I can’t play an instrument and have no technical knowledge, this still gets the geek in me fascinated about different tones and playing styles. I appreciated that it was presented in a way that I could understand too.

Nice collection. I'm an old bass freak and I'm somewhat ashamed to say I own 31 basses, can't help myself I just love basses.So cool you playing with B.O.C. Been a fan forever.I caught them about 2-3 years ago and Kasim was on bass and it was a treat to see him.They rocked!

Very cool Rich. When I was growing up in the sixties, the P Bass was the king of the road. Being a big Beatles fan myself, the Hofner was a very unique looking and sounding bass. But for me, being a huge Yes fan, the Rickenbacker is my favorite. You can't help but think of Chris when you hear one.

You're making my Bass Heart happies! BASS! Everything else is just a bass in a different format: Guitar --> High-pitch Bass with a couple extra high-pitch bass strings; piano/keyboard --> 88 Key Bass with lots of frequencies; Drums --> Rhythmic Bass with a loud clangy B(R)ASS thingy; Synthesizers --> Electronic BASS with lots of computer-y frequencies to formant the mess out of a bass in a very drone-y kind of way! BASSSSSSS! Absolutely killer collection too! Even when you're playing with a pick.....! We Bass Players forgive you for that pick and appreciate you and all you do!

Great video Richie. You’re one hell of a player. I too wax brought up listening to the late great Chris. And fish out of Water is still in my top ten albums. One of my greatest memories is seeing Yes with the launch of close to the edge, London’s Crystal Palace garden party. What a great concert that was. Thanks for posting your videos. Band Geeks quality and talent is amazing. And Ann Marie’s voice is wonderful.

Richie (if I may be so informal) you are a super, super talented musician. You’re lucky to be surrounded by other similarly talented and dedicated musicians. I adore everything you guys do. What was the noise at 19:43? I’m not criticizing - the opposite - I’m using it as a means of humanizing your immense skills! That and the ‘guitar-face’ you put on when you solo (and you’re really digging it) are the only way of bringing you down to my level. Stay super-human.

Nice! Are you changing anything in the signal chain other than the controls on the bass? Or is the compressor, etc roughly identical for each bass? I've been on P-bass kick lately, I have a 74 sunburst, but I want a 65 Placid blue like Nick Campbell plays and a 62 sunburst like is the classic Jamerson bass, I believe. I got a moollon 5 string J bass which is probably my best bass overall, and I have a 69 Jazz with a nitro refinish that is pretty nice. There is basically never enough basses. They each have different characteristics and it really impacts the vibe of a recording.

When you were looking for the BOC bass, was there any thought to what the original bass parts were played on, Joe's tone? Or were you just going for a tone you were happy with and able to cover a broad range of sounds? I always am curious when a different musician has to play parts originally done by someone else, how they approach it. Obviously you nail the Chris Squire stuff, not sure if it's nearly as important in BOC though.

I bought the Ignition series Hofner last year, and it is pretttty darn close to Paul McCartney's sound. I wouldn't mind one of the German made ones, but I spent enough money on guitars and basses, I'm not going to spend an additional $1500 over what the Ignition costs when what I have is close enough.

Maybe, somebody here can answer. Is there a reason guitarists change guitars? At a concert, I'll see them run over to the side of the stage and grab a different guitar before the next song. Is there a reason for this? Something to do with tuning or sound?
@RichieCastellano
@RichieCastellano 3 жыл бұрын
Yes to both. Tuning and sound.
@scottman68
@scottman68 3 жыл бұрын
If I can add some details here... there are a *lot* of variations in guitars. The most obvious difference is electric vs. acoustic. Then you have number of strings. Historically, most (non-bass) guitars came in 6 and 12 string varieties... but the in the last decade or so we are starting to see 7 and 8 string electrics become more common. There are also different tunings guitarists use (standard, drop-D, half step down, etc). Additionally, the pickup configuration for each guitar affects sound quite a bit. Usually, when a guitarist switches gear mid-set, it is because they are using an instrument that fits the next song they are going to play - either for an alternate tuning, number of strings or different tone. Of course they occasionally swap due to breaking a string too :)

Based (bassed?) on this, I now know my hands are somewhat larger than yours. My main bass is a Lakland five string. And I've been looking at adding a Stingray. But the necks on the ones at the store were all too skinny, because they are Sterlings. I just found the Ray34. I have to have it.
