Rogan from the Auburn Bee Lab was kind enough to join mw and share the results of recent testing he performed on my bees. We also discussed different approaches to treating bees for Varroa Mites. Interesting stuff. They are doing good work and providing valuable feedback to beekeepers here in this area. I have heard for a while now that mites are becoming resistant to Amitraz. Watch the video to see if that holds true in my case.

Great video Bruce! As you well know I’m not an Auburn fan for sports but I’m a fan for any University that studies bees to help them survive and help the beekeepers be successful with their bees!

Yep it was good to see. A bit of a reality check. I hated to see that number of mites but glad the mites are not resistant to my favorite treatment of Apivar. Glad I had the heads up and was able to get treatments in most of my colonies.

I agree Bruce, I have seen more mites this year than any other year. I believe it is because of the warm winter, my colonies were bursting in March already. Beekeepers in the U.S are in for a rude awakening this coming winter if their mite counts are not taken care of.

I have mine treated. All except one yard that I have to finish getting treatments in. Hopefully everything will work out well.

Hopguard effective? First I've heard of that, interesting. Bruce did Rogan mention who the commercial beekeeper was he worked with (30,000 hives)? Thank you for posting the interview.

I have never used Hopguard. I think it is a little difficult to use properly. I am not sure which large operation he worked for but he definitely understands bees and knows how to efficiently handle them.

Hi, did someone make strips with vaselin and OA instead of glycerin and OA to kill varroa?

I don’t know about that. Seems like the bees would get caught on the strips.

How is the alcohol wash done? I guess it kills the bees.

Yes. Typically about 300 bees. But if you can get good data from 300 bees that can save a colony of 40,000+ bees then it is worth it to me.

Yes, an alcohol wash kills the bees instantly. A sugar shake/roll does not kill the bees instantly, but studies have shown that over %90 of the bees in a sugar shake die within 3 days, as the powder sugar clogs the spiracles of the bees and they slowly suffocate and die. What do you think is better michelemoneywell8765?

Bruce, have these bees been introduced to amatraz or appear products prior to this tasting? (Edit) min 6:45 i see the answer. Maybe try doing a natural supersiedure in the midst of a flow so the population is low during the dirth. Chemicals are dirty, even the organic ones. The concentration of the organic chemicals used is anything but natural. We can do better. (Edit) I understand the suggested treatment is not organic... even worse.

Thanks for the feedback but it has been very effective in the past for my bees. Apivar is actually very easy on the bees and still hard on mites, at least so far. I have to be efficient with my bees and this is one treatment that has worked well for me for years. I completely understand where you are coming from though and I appreciate the tip. As far as a lot population during a dearth…that is a death sentence here with the heat and humidity. Hive beetles flourish in those conditions. Our summer dearth is brutal every year. It is when I normally experience the most loss. July. August and September…brutal.

Seems like cheap insurance to me. When you figure to buy a colony will cost at least $150.00.

Ohhhh boy I wish they cost that much here😄 I'm buying Carniolians this year since we finally have a Carniolian breeder in the south Island and it's costing me 340 dollars a mated nuc 😬 fortunately, I know how to breed queens so it's only going to be this year but beekeeping is expensive in NZ if you're buying bee's.
