Really interested to see this. Thank you for posting it - sure to be helpful for those dreading the audition process. How times have changed. I attended Berklee in 1956 for the first time. The school was in a house at 284 Newbury Street and the total enrollment was 150 students. I just showed up with my money. I didn't know shit. I was self taught but it was an amazing experience and I thrived and have had a great professional life doing what I love. I recommend it highly.

I'm only in 8th grade, but I've had an absolute passion for music and singing. I want to audition as a vocalist because I want to be able to truly relish my love for the grace of music and sound. I still have a lot of time, obviously lol, but I feel that it's never to early to start planning for my future. Great video as well!

I have some questions, hoping someone would be kind enough to answer. Do they ask you which style you wanna improv in while you audition? Also is the improv done on a BG track or they play an instrument along? And one other thing, is the improv from the practice exercises given on the website alone? As for the sight reading, from the exercises you're given, can they ask you to play any one of those or is it your choice or do you have to play all?
@elashalev53313 жыл бұрын
nice video(: in the sight reading part, are the 6 exercises 4 bars long? or 8?

Hopefully it's not too late but to answer your questions: 1)They do ask which style you want to improv, or more accuratly they asked what style I was comfortable in beforehand and kept most the audition in that area. 2)It was a backing track for me (alothough mine was on zoom cuz COVID times). 3)I don't remember if it was the exact track on the website, but if not it was extremely similar. 4)For sight reading they start at the easiest and go until you finish or until you're at your best. Don't stress though, I can't really sight-read and still got in. (should be noted I was auditioning with vocals and im sure the sightreading level for vocals is less strict than piano or violin, etc).

I play a few instruments but in terms of an audition, I probably want to do piano. However, that scares me because piano is very competitive. It's a pretty simple instrument, so you have to be good. I know clarinet (Bb and bass), tenor sax, flute, piano, and I'm learning electric guitar currently. My first instrument was Bb clarinet but then I switched to bass clarinet and bass clarinet became my best instrument. I don't plan to do anything with bass clarinet in the future so I'd only audition with it if it contributed to me getting in. I'm a junior in high school and I'm very worried for myself because I care about music a lot. Sometimes I believe I care about it too much. It's what I love and it's what I think I can do so Berklee is my one shot. I'm very stubborn and once I make plans, I like to stick to it. If I don't get into Berklee, I don't know what else to do. Don't know why I told you all of this haha. Maybe it was good for me to get all my worries and thoughts out. A question I do have is, does our audition instrument have to be what we study there?

Hi man, I just auditioned yesterday with universal mind by lte in keyboard and the song went absolutely perfect. The ear training went perfect too. The improvisation went decent since they put a jazz backing track an the reading went decent to. I wanted to ask you if you got any scholarship because there is no way I can pay for it and you are the only person I found that auditioned with a DT/LTE song.

Hey man! My audition is in a few days and I have a question about the backing track for the prepared piece. I want to do Parabola by Tool, but I want to know what kind of backing track I can have with the song, can I just plug my phone in and play the song from Spotify, or do I need to have a backing track that doesn’t have the guitar in it? Any information would be helpful, thank you!
@braedenrawa4 жыл бұрын
Wilson From Castaway hey! i would recommend using a backing track without the guitar, if that’s the instrument you plan on auditioning with. Best of luck to you!
@wilsonsguitarlounge82444 жыл бұрын
Braeden Robert thanks man! Second question, what kind of amp should I expect to use? Do they have amps with gain or do they only have clean amps and I’ll have to use pedals? And would it be frowned upon to bring my own amp or pedalboard to the audition? And how important is my tone anyways, do they just care about playing or is having a bad tone going to affect the audition? Thank you so much man!

I believe the tuition fees for Berklee are around $60,000 dollars per year, so a 4 year course to get your degree could hit a quarter of a million dollars. Wow.

Josh Quimby that was about the same position I was in my junior year as well. The best advice I could give is to study and learn as much as you can prior to your audition, and try to work on sight reading as much as you can. Good luck!:)

hard is a subjective term. You have to be good yes, but not an unobtainable level. Just compare yourself to a bunch of first/second year berklee students. Chances are if you can almost match them you'll be up for scholarship.
