Hello friends, I had the idea to think about all the things I purchased in 2022 and share my BEST and my WORST purchases of the year.

A couple of years ago, my 4 year old grandson went through a "tape" stage where he was obsessed with tape and wanted to tape up everything. I gave him a big basket of my least used/cheaper washi tapes (probably 100-150 rolls). Knowing they wouldn't damage anything and would be easy to remove, I let him do whatever he wanted with it and he taped up everything he could reach...the cat tree, all of the door knobs, you name it, it had tape on it. I think he even built a fort with it. He had hours and hours of fun with it and I loved seeing him enjoy using it!

Wow - I always passed over the Traveler's Notebook clip because I thought "meh, it's just a clip." Your comparison was so helpful - I struggle with some notebooks laying flat so I think I would get some real use out of that. Thank you so much!

I loved this video. It really made me think! I think my best purchases involved certain fountain pens, leather journal covers, White Lightning Ink Additive, and my Lochby Quattro pen case. My worst purchases were stickers and washi tape and Narwhal fountain pens. Luckily I was able to sell off or give away what I didn't like. I totally am doing a no spend 2023. I am in want of nothing!

Such an insightful video Simone! And a really good exercise to do at the end of the year. I can definitely relate to the feeling of wanting something right away, rather than waiting for it to be needed. I regretted buying multiple Lamy Safaris and since sold two (TWSBI will be my new go-to inexpensive fountain pen I think). And inspired by you, I‘ve also set myself the rule of always buying ink samples first 😬 My best purchase this year might be my second hand travelers notebook and the inserts. Journaling in the standard TN size has really brought fresh air to my creative journaling and I have loved taking it on trips to help me keep my documents organized.

Yeah, I am not in love with the Lamy Safari as an every day writer anymore either. I'm glad you noticed and were able to do some damage control. And a second hand TN is even better than a completely new one, congratulations!

Hi, thanks for sharing There are Washi tapes I like a little less than the rest and I use them in the kitchen: to seal open packages for example or to stick things on the wall/fridge. I have used up many rolls so far this way 😊 I hope this helps!! 😁

Thanks for sharing! - I just replied to someone and said that I consider them to be small pieces of art. And I think that's exactly the reason why I have such a hard time using them. They are art! But - I'm giving myself a pat on the shoulder - we used all my winter tapes to wrap Christmas gifts.

Very interesting about he Travelers Notebook clip. It looks really useful and it was something that i wondered about. That will go on my wish list. Thanks for the practical review! I think my Kaweco sport is my least favorite pen of the four I currently have. I will probably end up selling it or giving it to my son for Christmas.

Gah, washi tape! I have quite a bit and I can't make it work for me! I think I should sit down and come up with a best and worst purchase list too. Thank you for the idea! I am banning myself from watching haul videos for the entire month of January to see how I do with my fomo.

I knew I wanted to start the domestika courses in January, so I'm not too worried, but I had those books on my shelf and had completely forgotten about them. Ugh. Since I do better with video instruction, I'll start with the classes and then maybe move onto the books.

I think you've convinced me that I need a Traveler's clip, because that would be so helpful sometimes. I bought the same nib holder from AliExpress, for the same reason that it's acrylic and it's not going to get all water damaged when I rinse it.

I am new to leather covers for my journals and although I purchased 5 in the last 6 months I don’t see myself parting with any. I also purchased my first fountain pen this year and I’m already up to 4. I guess my regret is just not being patient and purchasing so much in such a short period of time. It’s just a new discovery for me and I just wanted it all. My first fountain pen. My first ink bottles My first leather cover. My first leather pen case. My first time using stickers in planners and using washi…. I actually started using the Happy Planner the beginning of this year and am still using it for work and love it for that, but I am using an A6 weekly planner and an A6 1/2 year stalogy for dailys in an A6 leather cover for my EDC. My plan for 2023 is to set a budget and slow down and enjoy everything I have already purchased.

I think that's the joy (and danger) of any new hobby you stumble into. There is so much to explore and discover and you can just buy and buy and buy. I hope you'll be able to slow down a bit and enjoy. And all the purchases you have made this year showed you what you might like or not like and you can make better decisions for future purchases.

Thanks for this great video. You have articulated so well a problem I have, which is buying things before I need them or because I think having them will make me create beautiful things like those I see others do. I tend to buy beautiful stickers, especially the print-ons, and then not use them. It's not so much FOMO as it is using purchases to try to be someone I'm not (artistic, etc ). I have some Mildliners and Dot markers coming for color coding, and I don't know if I'm going to use those much either. I guess we'll see! I was also interested in your comments about the Travelers brass clip because I've been trying to decide whether to buy one. It sounds like they really do work better than ordinary binder clips. Intentional spending is the key. Thanks again!

Yeah, I noticed I didn't simply turn into an amazing artist just because I have those professional supplies. LOL. Most of the art supplies I got from amazon with crazy fast shipping and so I really have to wait until I almost sit down to start. And yes: the clip is the best ever!

I also have a Galen A5 zip notebook and use it for my pen pal portable station. It’s a perfect use for me in conjunction with an A5 pouch with envelopes and smaller writing sheets for short notes to tuck into packages. I also have the Rickshaw Sinclair R. I have two of the original Nock Sinclair cases and they are my most used. The R version is a nice upgrade with the fuzzy fabric inside and the outside pocket. I also wanted to purchase the Robert Oster series of inks that you did, but chose not to because of samples being unavailable. They are so beautiful and I had such FOMO! Washi is also a failure for me. I use it, but not nearly the amount I purchase. I have also started using it for everyday things like another commenter mentioned. A success this year has been Stickii club! It gives me sticker sheets with a theme which I use regularly in my journal and planner. It has also given me sticker sheets to send out with pen pal mail. Overall, it has been a win. Thank you so much for sharing. It was wonderful following along with you and considering my own purchasing habits. 🤘🏼😸🧡

I was subscribed to stickii for a while too, but that didn't work for me. I'm getting Brandi Kincaid's Extravagant Hope mailer and I feel that covers my sticker fix every month and then I should be ok with the random stationery surprise from the Ink Flights. There shouldn't really be a need to buy even more ....

I agree with the Traveller's Notebook clip, have myself the airplane motif, looks great. Further, got a deal with the Esterbrooke Bee book clip, same deal. Most joyous stationary I have in 2022.

Yes, the ink hoarding problem. Just need a hiatus, definitely after No.12. Keep the faith, ink up, and taken them down to a manageable number, perhaps six to eight to start off. I stick to exclusive only, helps limit my collection.

Herringbone pattern for your grey Rickshaw, you're welcome. In lieu of a Traveler's regular Notebook, got a hold of a few Frank Gehry travel journals with leatherette covers that take refills for a fraction of the price, $2 US.

I am the same way about washi tapes. I'm a sucker for cat themed tapes and geometric styles or cool colorways/ patterns. I found that I use them more when I put them on a card and have them handy. I'm not about to go digging around a bag of rolls. This way keeps them in my face and easily accessible. I tend to use them more in my planner than in my journals for some reason. They make great "filler art."

For the shimmer ink you are having trouble using, maybe you can use it without shaking it up and letting the shimmer sit at the bottom. Then, you can still enjoy the color 🤗

@@seemownay I got a cheap Twisbi Swipe with a stub nib. The shimmering inks still clog the nib and the feed sometimes, but it's an inexpensive pen and it's very easy to clean. And the stub really brings the properties of shimmering inks up to the page. Happy writing!

I bought the platinum curidas click fountain pen and its now my favorite pen, I even bought another in another color now, im waiting for it to arrive. I also bought the BAO container for stationery stuff and its a win only because its cute, it doesnt actually fit everything i want it to fit hehe

Hallo Simone, mit den Washis kann ich auch nicht wirklich was anfangen! I fand deine Auswahl echt toll aber da ich kein Leder kaufe, darf ich nur staunen. Ach, diese super schöne japanische Schreibwaren sind einfach viel zu gefährlich! Die Travelers Company Produkte sind einfach umwerfend! Ich entschuldige mich für meine Schreibweise aber das auf Deutsch zu meistern ist echt eine Kunst für sich! (bin Brasilianerin, lebt seit acht Jahren hier). Vielleicht muss ich klarstellen, dass ich washi tape genial finde. Die Tapes sind wie kleine Kunstwerke und vielleicht ist das genau der Grund warum ich washi tape nicht einfach irgendwo hinkleben kann. Ist ja schließlich Kunst. I ended 2022 with a stationary spree. I’ve fallen down a yt rabbit hole and have purchased 3 inks, 4 fountain pens, a Hobonichi Weeks and clear case, a Jibun Techo days, Hobonichi Weekly Supplement, and Moterm travel case. I relate to your fountain pen dilemma while my purchase was just $18 USD my Pilot MR with M nib is a pen I really don’t like. I bought a TWSBI eco wrote with it and immediately ordered another (my 4th fountain pen purchase in Dec 😅) because I love it. I don’t know if I can clean and return the Pilot Mr I ordered it on Amazon. I’d like to return the pen I’m not going to use it. I am going to return the clear Hobo case and the Weekly Supplement. It’s hard to know what you’ll like before you get them and experiment. Good on you for finding new homes for the things you know you aren’t going to use.

I look at these 'cheaper' purchases that don't work out at great learning experiences, maybe you can figure out what exactly you don't like about the Pilot MR so you can buy the next pen with more confidence. Thanks so much for watching!

Have the Kaweco pens and case been sold yet?! I’ve decided that I wanted to start a small Kaweco collection AND have been looking for a perfect case-they all seem to be leather, which I only feel comfortable buying secondhand. I would love to take those off your hands!

It really sounds like you are torn about the washi. I thought I heard you say you didn't want washi in your journals...but that you want to use them in your journals. (Maybe I misheard?) I love washi. I use it almost all the time in the letters I write to my pen pals (I often buy plain writing paper and decorate it myself) and always on the envelopes. I also use it every month in my bullet journal. In fact, most of the monthly themes I choose for my journal are chosen because of the washi tapes I have. I do still have more of it than I need...and so, when it's been around a bit too long, I donate it. I put together a "craft stash grab bag" and it gets added to anything else I'm donating. You might also consider de-stashing by offering it to beginning crafters/journalers who can't afford much on their own. There would be the mailing expense...but at least you know it would be going to a good home. (Sorry for this long answer; I think I had too much coffee this morning! LOL)

I'm torn about washi because I love it. I love all the designs people come up with and how beautiful most of them are on the small tape. It's a tiny piece of art, but I just don't use it. I don't use it enough to justify even more when I already have "so much". And it's not a collectible item at all because it goes bad. I've started making my own letter paper with washi too, that's at least one way to use it and enjoy it. I'll be going to some meetups in the next year and I think I'll bring my destash items to those.

I believe that pattern on the Rickshaw is called herringbone. I once ordered a vegan wallet from Italy that had that pattern. Love it! I think I have a Rickshaw pen sleeve on the way. Is it bad that I’m not sure what I ordered? Hahaha…

Excellent video. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. One of my FOMOs is that Kaweco iridescent pen but I keep saying "No" because I rarely use the Kawecos I have. They are wonderful pens but my hands prefer larger pens. I am really liking the Jinhao 159x size and just recently realized that the non slim Sailors would be best as well (Will have to buy one in the future to find out). No real regrets here except for having too many 2023 planners to choose from because it is a serious distraction.

I actually sold the pen (both and case) after the video, I'm very grateful someone else will be able to give those pieces a better home. I think I'd want to try a Kaweco with a B nib but I'll wait until a color comes along that speaks to me. Yeah, after the Platinum working so well for me, now I'm curious to write with a Sailor just to see how that would work for me. LOL.

Absolutely, I do. I'm really behind on sending out happy mail, so it will take a while but I can totally send out Cozy Comfort samples. That's the good thing that came out of it: it's an ink I can send to people because nobody has it. (And I don't have lots to offer regarding swaps, lol.)

If you ever think about selling that Van Gogh case, please let me know. Specifically if you are selling it with panned colors. I have that in my Amazon cart but I’ve been holding off. I see some colors listed in your case that I have always wanted to try so I'm super interested should you decide on a price. I have two Instagrams, one which is under Mummy Brown name. The other is my illustration page, that’s the one that you and I communicated with when you sent me that Buttered Popcorn sample.

LOL, yes, the price. I bought it as a Valentine's gift from my husband one year and he got a heart attack when he saw how much it was. We never gift each other V-Day presents but I needed an excuse to get the pen roll.
