Congratulations! Keep the area above the kitchen cupboards closed. It stops dust and grease from collecting above the cabinets. I have had both and hands down love it closed. It saves you from cleaning that area every year. Second option is to have cupboards up to the ceiling then you can store the once a year party stuff up there.

Wow, how exciting! I agree with removing the door in the kitchen. It will give your kitchen way more functionality than the door being there. Good luck, and remember, patience! Rome wasn't built in a day!😅

Congrats, that’s super exciting. I would put your sewing room on the side of the house with more sunlight and take out the wall. I recommend putting the utility closet in the room with the washing machine. It will aide with dying projects and washing prep. I would also leave the creepy window in case a service worker would need to access that area. Just cover it with a removable panel. Good luck with everything!

Fun times ahead! We moved 3 years ago into a beautiful wooden house built in 1930, and my mothers was built in 1910. We have been renovating them. Before moving my husband had renovated our home for selling. Thus we have put in 3 gorgeous kitchens. I would say to you that even with flat packed kitchens there is a lot of work that goes into them. Luckily my husband is extremely handy and detailed oriented. It still takes a good couple of months to get it finished. After having demolished the 3 kitchens he had to redo the walls and floors as nothing was straight or plum, and there was rot in places. All good fun, but you feel great once done. Handle and tile shopping is so tricky with all the choices. If only Wayfair shipped to Australia. Oh and have you considered down/pot lights? xxxxxxxxxx

I would totally be sewing in the basement, in the worst room down there with the big window. We had a creepy basement crawlspace window too which is now gone, I'm glad to say. I just finished fixing up the house we bought late last year. Every day. All day. So much fixing and cleaning. A couple of tips… pace your self. Move from one project to another without worrying about finishing things. It’s nice to take a break from something and return with fresh eyes. Here’s a big one. Plan and prepare all your meals in the morning or you will get too busy and just not eat. Can’t wait to see the progress. It will be amazing.

Congratulations on your new home! I just finished updating my cabinets. They were builder grade. I got a miter saw off Amazon and added molding to the tops and sides of the cabinets, all around the island, and anywhere there was just a flat panel. Then I learned how to set up a paint spraying station in my garage. I'd be happy to share what I learned and before and after photos if you are interested. It was a big project, but they look fantastic now. I wish you all the best on your renovations, and I look forward to seeing how it goes!

So exciting! My brother's first house looked almost exactly like yours. It was in Massachusetts. A few small differences - his bay window was in the living room and his basement was almost completely open except for 2 small rooms to either side of a bathroom. But everything else is exactly the same. So fun! Hope you enjoy the renovation process and turning your new house into a home. Big Hugs

How very exciting! The bones of the house are good, the big windows in your dining room and living room are great! I live in Calgary, Canada and find basements to be cold on the floor but we put in floor heating in and makes the world of difference. Our house was new so we put it directly into the cement flooring but in your case you could put electric heat pads that sit right on your cement and then place your flooring on top of that, they are a game change. Keep them on in the winter and turn them off in summer so your basement stays cool. It’s amazing how much cozier the whole house, including the upstairs feels when the basement floor is kept warm. In your climate, it is definitely something to think about.

Congratulations on finding your home!! It will be an adventure for sure - terrific and impressive that you’re doing most (all?) renovations yourself! I’ve just moved into a 1960’s bungalow style home which is also completely functional but needs some love. My kitchen is nearly as “bad” as yours - also had very awkwardly placed upper cabinets with a “peek through” to the eating area: impractical, ugly and make the kitchen unnecessarily dark and blocked off. In addition, the stove is located on the corner of this and has no backsplash: so when you cook, if anything bubbles over, it basically just bubbles onto the table located behind it 😂. Very strange. Can’t wait to see what you do with your kitchen, maybe I’ll get some inspiration!!

We also bought a fixer upper when I was in my late 30’s. I greatly enjoyed ripping up carpet, painting, and (finally) when we had enough money to renovate the bathrooms and kitchen.
