My biggest (probably) pet peeve is when they tell us something slightly philosophical or scientific and then some character will say 'don't speak geek' or 'what does that mean in English' like UGH. There are ways of explaining things in more detail without being patronising! UGGGH I HATE IT SO MUCH haha can you tell? And YES about the first person stuff! haha this was so fun :D

"My pupils dilated?" Why would someone know that? And I'm not going to stop seeing "he looked her over for wounds" now. I actually like "we will find them" and "I do not know" in certain genres, because in certain time periods, and worlds based on other time periods, it actually makes more sense. But in a contemporary or something? Yeah, I'd see the problem.
@adashofash
@adashofash 6 жыл бұрын
Unicorn Hunter Books it's comforting someone would look for wounds but NOT EVERY DANG TIME THEY SEE EACH OTHER! And yes I definitely know what you mean! In the right times not using contractions can be helpful but not most of the time for me😂

This is a Sarah J. Maas callout post: "male" and "female." I HATE IT SO MUCH. Like I get why fairies aren't called man and woman because those are human terms, but it legitimately pulls me out of the story every time a character uses this in the dialogue or it's in the narration. It bothers me so much that it affected my goodreads rating for ACOMAF.

I didn't even realize that some of these were my pet peeves until you pointed it out, particularly the contractions and the overall dialogue that people use. It tends to seem too technical and just not at all how people would actually talk. and then the third person/first person argument. Like yeeees, exactly. The things that go through the peoples head or supposedly go through their heads just don't make sense half the time. And I hate alternating POV. I tend to just get really confused if the author doesn't do it well because they tend to kinda go back in time and go over things that have already been through in another chapter and it's just weird.
@adashofash

Tommie Garcia hahaha most of these pet peeves I have are technical/grammatical so I totally agree 👏🏼 & sometimes the POV switch confuses me but I'm one of those people who enjoys that actually! 😂 regardless I definitely know what you mean when you say it gets confusing!

I completely agree with what you named ‘textbook writing’, it is so frustrating! When studying creative writing the best thing my teacher ever said was ‘show, don’t tell’, and I wish these authors would use that advice.

FIRST PERSON IS THE GOAT
@ursulajoni15
@ursulajoni15 5 жыл бұрын
I'dlike to expand your point about first-person into just a general thing about mistakes with point-of-view. For example, if you are writing in third person omniscient your narrator should not be using slang and colloquial language as they are not a human being. Also, if you do third-person limited it's the same issue is first person you're still following the main character your narrator can't possibly know what other people are thinking or what's happening elsewhere it's such a common mistake in fictional romances to have a third person limited narrator follow around the main character in Liv in their head and then suddenly magically know that the love interest is so in love with them and it's so annoying.

Ok I don't know if this is a common pet peeve when it comes to reading but i hate it when they have misleading genre labeling. Like if I pick up a drama and thriller I expect just a drama and thriller book no more no less. So I become super pissed when it becomes a romantic book. Like if I wanted a god damn romantic book I would have picked one up.

I took a literally analysis class and your rant about the jewelry box reminded me of my professor. He would be like how does the curtains being Blue enhance the character’s mood or the overall theme? I also had to write a five page paper about Atonement and how the vase that the main character broke represented the broken relationships in her life and it was torture. But, that’s a forever pet peeve of mine. I also have a big problem with dialect, like if it’s not explained for a character to be speaking the way they are then it irks me, to know end, because I’m like, “Are these grammar mistakes? Or where are they from?” Because, that’s when reading becomes more of a headache.

I have an irrational hatred for authors overdoing emdashes. I get that's a writing style but it just brings emphasis to how much the writer one specific sentence structure. "Low visibility, unnecessary noise - I was well on my way to another fruitless hunt". I know people love it but this is a line from ACATAR and I counted how many time SJM uses this and it's like 60ish times in the first two chapters. That's A LOT. I like 3rd person as well and because of that I also cannot stand repetitive words. "Said", "growled" etc. Gah!!!

I can totally relate to the 1st person POV peeve, and it's not with every 1st person. There are certain things that authors throw in that make me question the writting and story telling, especially because it can ruin a book, or creative writting.

I hate when parents neglect to inform their kids of their heritage and shenanigans ensue. I don't recall hating it with Percy Jackson, but I remember trying to read Passenger and about twenty pages in just screeching. As for the conjunctions, I've realized that I use them less because of majoring in English and writing papers and not being able to use them.
