Aftermarket replacement (actually rebuilt) hybrid batteries seem to be readily available and affordable now. Last time I looked, they were about $600 for a Prius. That was for the part, not including installation, as I recall. But installation is easy enough for most DIY home mechanics. You trade in your old 'core' to be rebuilt for the next guy, so they are recycled. Individual cells are tested and replaced as necessary. The originals usually seem to go well over 100k miles before they fail. Maybe closer to 200k. For context, an aftermarket replacement turbo, which will usually be necessary at around 100k miles as well, costs about $500 plus the install. Again, not that difficult to do by yourself. So I think Hoovie overstated the cost of hybrid battery replacement a little bit. I'm sure it's a lot more at the dealership, of course, as is a turbo. Still, I agree that the environmental impact of producing a new vehicle far outweighs that of continuing to operate a WELL-MAINTAINED older vehicle, regardless of advantages in fuel economy or exhaust emissions.

Toyota still sells the 70-Series land cruisers in many forms including as pickups. So technically Toyota is the only manufacturer that literally builds them like they used to. Unfortunately they don’t sell them to the sad saps in North America, but they’re sold in most of the rest of the world.

The 7.3 was built by Navistar (International) for Ford. Although a heavy engine, it was indeed very reliable. Unfortunately, FoMoCo and Navistar could not come to an agreement during renegotiation in the mid 2000, and that why we have the current powerstoke. Fun Fact: The 7.3's that where used in the Fords were also used in the International school buses and mid duty trucks.

2011 F-150 EcoBoost here - just turned over 175,000 miles. Not a single motor or drivetrain issue with it, it's one of the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned. Granted my usage is almost 90% highway, which seems to be ideal for those motors - but the dealer that services mentioned they have plenty of 3.5 fleet trucks that are over 200 and 300k on them without issue.

@@ibol13l3: _"Hybrid cars offset the additional emissions from manufacturing within the first year of use…"_ - That claim is far too simplistic to be accurate. Not all cars emit the same pollutants and CO2 over the first year of use because not all cars consume the same amount of fuel per mile nor are driven the same millage over the first year of use. Likewise, not all cars (hybrid, full electric, ICE-powered) require the same emissions to be manufactured.

As someone who has owned multiple Ford Trucks with the 5.4L v8 as well as a 2014 focus with the dual clutch trans. I owned a 2008 Expedition and 2006 F150, both were excellent vehicles for me. The F150 got its 3rd owner when we sold it with 205k miles and the Expy got traded in with 230k miles. Both never had their engines opened or any valvetrain work of any sort. The F150 always got Mobil 1 oil every 5k and the Expy got Motorcraft oil every 5k. Both trucks also never had a sparkplug break in the head The 2014 focus was also a great car when we owned it. From 20k mi to 115k mi it never had a single issue with the transmission itself. The trans controller failed once under warranty but that was it. We sold that to a family member and they are still driving it with no trans issues. The main issue I had with that car is that there was not enough rear camber adjustment in the rear wheels so it wouldn't wear the insides Would be an interesting video for Hoovie to but the highest mileage 3v Ford engine that he can find and take it to the wizard.

@gillesbaudeweyns6802
@gillesbaudeweyns6802 4 жыл бұрын
Its not quite as simple and depends on a lot of variables, quite a few studies have been done on the subject. In some cases it is indeed more efficient to keep an old car running, but in a lot of cases its more efficient to replace it depending on the projected mileage. The way Tyler is going to use it, I reckon it'll be more efficient than buying new & efficient.

This is confirmation bias. Basically because you want it to be true you think it's propably true. It's not. Over a certain (not too large) milage the carbon footprint for fuel far exceeds the production process. This raptor has done about 250,000 kilometers. At lets say 15 liters per 100 km this accounts to 15 * 250,000 / 100 = 37.500 liters of fuel. That is almost 10.000 gallons. Let that sink in.

I’m telling ya, the fiesta and focus powershift DCT is a good transmission post 2014. As long as it’s got a revision D or later clutch there’s nothing wrong with it. People who bought them creep at lights and in traffic with their foot on the brake, hold themselves on hills with the throttle even though it’s got auto hill hold and clutch abusive shit like that. You wouldn’t do those things in a manual if you want it to last and a DCT is no different.

The very early 3.5 ecoboost did have some timing chain failures . but the turbos hardly ever give a problem. The only problem you really see with first gen eb is occasional coolant leak (water pump degas bottle hose thermostat housing and cooling line fitting on turbos) I have seen several ecoboost make it well over 250k miles. The highest I seen was 348k. And the last years of the 5.4 were extremely tough engines. Just all depends howbyou take care of the vehicle

Right again Hoovie. I bought my 2008 Durango 4.7 several years ago for 10 k with 80 k miles and it runs great. yes it will average 14 MPG but compared to a new one for $40000. Thats a lot of gas. Feed and water it regularly and it good to go. At 143k miles now, I put new shocks and tires on and its like a new car. Will probably need to put in a timing set then it should go 250k miles. My wife hit a deer two days ago at 25 mph and there is not even a scratch. Sure I wish I still had my SAAB Viggen but with all the 90 year olds in my community , blind in one eye, I like the bulk of the Durango.

you actually nail the major flaw in the eco terrorist's mantra: it is far more enviro friendly to keep an older vehicle on the road for years using recycled parts than to scrap it and buy a whole new EV. While the emissions during use may be higher the emissions during the manufacturing process are about the same. Now a 6L raptor that gets 8 mpg might not be the best example but a vehicle with reasonable fuel econ IS a great example. I bet I'm getting 22 mpg in my 2006 F150.

According to the California Energy Commission, 10 to 20 percent of a vehicle's total lifetime greenhouse gas emissions are released during the manufacturing stage. So I guess a slightly less reliable hybrid would eventually turn out to be more environmentally friendly than the raptor.

Depends, if it's a first gen Prius, most likely not. Since they use antiquated nickel-cadmium batteries which you can't even recycle and loose most of their capacity to hold a charge within just a couple of years of exertious use, especially in colder climates. But, if we're talking about the more modern Prius' with lithium-ion batteries, then yes. You are correct. Hoovie is just peddeling a bullshit myth created by climate change denialists and oil companies to sell more fuel, that keeping old gas guzzling junk on the road is good for the environment. Unfortunately he's wrong and misinformed, although I doubt there's any nefarious motives behind his statements. He's just being a bit of an idiot, like most upper-middle class people who are a bit too attached to the excesses of their lifestyle. Sad to see him buy into that bullshit, but considering my own wastefulness, being a lower-middle class white male who hoards old power hungry computers (UNIX Workstations, an SGi Octane will push out 1500 British thermal units of heat, just on idle. For fuxake) I have no leg to stand on to judge him. He should just stop rationalizing it with nonsense; especially since he works in corporate management where making decisions based on the economic (and potentially, environmental) efficiency of business strategies is a factor and in this particular choice, there is none. Despite popular myth. He is in fact, wrong. And you are in fact, correct.
