“It makes me happy, so I carry it”. That, and the 1.5 L Nalgene for a place for your stickers is why I love your videos. You bring joy to the experience of backpacking! I really appreciate that you are not just another gear head repeating the same tired list of the latest and lightest gear. That is why I subscribe to your channel.

Hey thanks! Honestly that’s a big part of why I wanted to do this video. To show there are plenty of options that aren’t the most high tech fabrics, but still very light weight. I’ve owned most of those items at some point, and they are nice, don’t get me wrong, but not the end all be all perfect gear by any means.

I got to give you credit. You are just a no frills, real dude and I love it. We actually don’t live that far apart and would love to take a few trips with you, any way. I hope you get the subscriptions you deserve. I have that GPS, I have a GG pack(Maripossa and the Two) and tent (among others). Anyway, I am a no frills real dude too and live one state to the east so if you need a trekking buddy for a weekend. Look me up. I will go with you. I think we would have a stupid good time.

Different gear for different people, and different situations. You need appropriate gear for the conditions. Your spider story really resonated! 😂 I did almost a week with just a sleeping bag in an open barn December of ‘21… right up until a big spider ran across my face as I was trying to get to sleep. Spider died. Poor goats were traumatized by my reaction, and I decided that was the end of my comforting my “new to sleeping in a barn” house raised goatling! Tents are good!

Great video brother! I had to do a double take when you said there was 125 following you, when I checked you were at 625, probably have a few more already too! This video is only a month old too, so that means you've gained 500 followers in 4 weeks! I bet your channel is about to blow up. I'm going to u save this video and reference it while building my load out.

I have the explorer plus. After 3 days on a boundary waters canoe trip I was thinking I should have gotten the mini, but on day 4 my cell phone went in the lake. Glad I had the plus so I could keep using my maps and communicating with my wife. Now I say take the extra weight, because just like most things in survival and outdoors, redundancy is good.

Nice video man. I appreciate you sharing your perspective. I like light stuff but I don’t worry about going ultralight for multiple reasons. I train my ass off year round and eat right to be able to be strong enough to bring some luxury type items on my trips. Gossamer gear and WayMark are such cool companies. They make really nice packs. I just picked up a Mountainsmith Scream 55 for under $100 so I’m pumped to get that bad boy out on the trail.

Nice video! Not gonna lie, you had me at the X-Mid thumbnail, lol. I got mine a couple months ago and took it out once…love the 1P…great for my windy environment. Uberlite/GG 1/8inch roll user as well…I am careful with them and I’ve slept on the Uberlite at home to see if it leeks before I take it out. No leaks, no complaints. I toss and turn so I got the wide and it weighs 11oz. I’ve only done overnights so far, but have a 3 day and a 5 day trip coming up so my brain is trying to figure out the comfort vs Weight-over-distance-ratio for these longer trips. Thanks for the great content.
@Beardedbackpacker
@Beardedbackpacker Жыл бұрын
Those will be some awesome trips! Trial and error is the best way to figure out what to bring and what to leave. That loadout is multiple years worth of trips taking stuff and then assessing what I actually needed and what was just dead weight. But don’t be afraid to pack items that make you happy too. Don’t get caught up too much in the idea of shedding weight.

@@Beardedbackpacker so true! And I suppose 5 days isn’t that long, but to me it feels like the whole PCT, lol. I’m getting in better shape, losing weight I gained during Covid (down over 50 pounds!), but I’m still 50 years old and it routinely feels like “everything hurts and I’m dying”, lol. But Go, Team! We can do this! :)

New to the channel, saw the first (for me) on the xmid, “bloke in Europe who bought one and agreed” .. Keep your videos going mate. I’m not really a backpacker, I do canoe/paddle expeds and Bikepacking … but for long durations so cross over that way. Canoe trips in boreal mean a decent amount of gear carry (plus boats, paddles etc), Bikepacking off grid is still packing gear plus a bike. Anyway, you talk a lot of sense and clearly from experience. There are a lot of “leave the car, walk 3 miles, make video, return” trips around on YT and they are fine but for 15 to 20 or more days, it changes the imperative. Just wanted to say thanks and hopefully encourage a bit

I like watching backpacking gear videos. I mostly car camp (from a small sedan) but have been bike-packing more (with a trailer), but when I do go camping it’s typically for several days and I pack-in all of my own food and water. I’m starting to increase my distance bike packing as I get my system figured out, including water sources/treatment in the backcountry.

I might have to try the G4-20 this year. I have the kumo now and it's a little small unless it's middle of summer and I limit my stuff. My daughter has now claimed it, since I end up carrying most of her food anyway, it's a good fit for her. 😁 Definitely agree they don't get enough attention. Great company to deal with and quality stuff too. Surprised they aren't more popular.
@Beardedbackpacker
@Beardedbackpacker Жыл бұрын
I think you would love the G4-20 then for sure! I went back and forth about the same two and ended up going this route. Even if I take less stuff, you can just roll it down and compress it. And I’m pretty sure they get overlooked because they don’t make DCF packs… I’ve had DCF packs before, and I’ll happily spend half the price for these… just my opinion!

Great video, i too am a fan of 1.5 liter bottles. I carry a 750mL up front on my strap. I just bought an Uberlite pad but have not used it as yet. I have about six Thermarest pads now with one 30+ years old. I like the Gossamer gear 1/8” pad as a skid stopper. If you are not on a flat surface I used to always slide down hill at night. Some people have used spray silicon on the back of their pad but that tacky stuff is not for me. I’m hoping it will also prevent the Uberlites early demise.

I wonder if most the gear list pll are only doing one type of hiking. Normally I find that 15lbs base weight good middle ground to be fairly comfortable for hiking and camping, but if I’m doing a lot of ups and downs in a hike I try to get under 10 or if I’m going to be stealth camping I like to use a hammock and winter hiking I don’t even weigh my stuff because I don’t want to know how heavy it is.
