The ones with terrible audio quality are not the ones who spent $30 on a cheap USB desk microphone, but those who haven't.

exactly this. I have a cheap XLR mic, it was around 30$, but I also have a decent audio interface (I also make music) with good mic pre amps. Then just a little bit of EQ and compression with the build in plugins and you sound like a pro.

Another option is to say "your mic is not working properly" or "sounds really quiet" etc or the infamous "sounds like you are in a bathtub" 😂 follwed by a reconnect or unplugging/plugging said mic back in

reason you would want to use that camera connector my guess is so you can record exactly what is comming from mic on camera for syncing even if you are recording audio on computer. at least thats how i would use it personally i love my no nonsense audio interface yes its more on pro side in features with no magic but all i need it do is set line 1 to what i normally set it to and im off to record or talk with somoene even if i lower the gain after previous engagement. and paired with right mic its amaizing

Really nice and comprehensive video of how you can get some nice communication gear! Oh man, you can so easily spend a lot of money for audio gear you won't even properly utilise. I have a Shure SM7B... for Discord calls. I am silly and do not recommend this to anyone... but boy, does my voice sound high-fidelity and crisp in clips I record in games! Also found it for a good discount and it's the genuine article, not a fake.

I agree that even a small budget for the mic goes a long way. And the audio setup price doesn't make much of a difference if the room is not acoustically treated properly, and post-processing techniques like EQ and compression are often what we hear when listening to favorite podcasters, so just buying Shure SM7B won't make you sound good. I'm using XLR cardioid mic (audio technica 2035) and Universal Audio Volt 176 interface with a built in 76 compressor and a vintage mic preamp, but I use it because I enjoy messing with audio and DSP. My 100€ bluetooth headphones do an almost equally good job when doing meetings on Teams or Webex. But there's something special in switching the knobs, turning the phantom power on, and swinging the mic arm into position before a call 😀Next, review of the studio monitors in the background?

if you want a even cheaper option for a mic Get a Behringer xm8500 it's 23 euro on thomann right now. I have a shure sm57 rode podmic xm8500 my favorite for dynamic mic is the shure sm57. But i dont like having a mic always in my face. For a further away microphone i use a SE electronics SE7 (yes dubble SE) its very good.

Interesting video and although my current headset sounds reasonable for work use (I have a "Jabra Talk 65" and being Bluetooth it's helpful for walking around to get a coffee etc), I am tempted for a desk setup as I begin to work more from home. Out of the 3 mics you demonstrated, I think the Senheiser sounded by far the best, but I'm only listening on a laptop so my speakers may not make a fair comparison

I say, if you are struggling financially, you don't even have to go that high. Just buy the cheapest audio interface, like the behringer um2 or the mentioned scarlet, and the cheapest pencil condenser on thomann. You will sound MORE than good enough to everyone and you can even go with used hardware.

Having the DAC in the mic (as USB microphones do) is actually a great move. The longer a weak analog signal travels, the higher your noise floor, and it only gets worse as your equipment ages. Great advice otherwise, especially about which side to speak into. Two other tricks: put soft things in front of you to reduce reflections, and point the mic at your chin to reduce pops without a pop filter.

😮‍💨 No need for paddling XLR microphones for web calls. The audio is compressed to minuscule bits for latency in all conference software. I use an expensive XLR microphone but for a normal business guy. By Budget: (0) if you have a Mac, use the Macs build in microphones and only stream audio to your headset (1) Use normal WIRED apple headphones - around 30 bucks. (2) Get a web call focused wired headset, i.e. the Poly Blackwire - around 60 bucks. (3) Consider reducing echo by using a Dynamic Microphone. These are stationary but also come in usb with no need to get some bulky converter. Examples are the Feelworld PM1 Dynamic USB Microphone - around 60 Bucks; no limit from there. Only consider XLR if you do recordings. Nonetheless: Audio is way more important than video - so good job!
