Ha! Thanks for the reaction. So yes...my family pronounces it Cape Vert - hence my pronunciation. I Did do a fuller video about my DNA results and this one ended up being a spin off due to someone asking me specifically about this portion. My grandfather was from Fogo. And yes my paternal grandmother is from the Narragansett tribe - hence the Native American roots. Looking at my updated Ancestry results - I see 5% Portugal and 5% Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana which had a lot of Portuguese conquistadors (which could tie in to Cape Verde being that it is an African Island that was also a territory of Portugal once) :-) Thanks for being kind.

In this video I am completely incorrect in saying Cape Verde is part of Portugal. Cape Verde was first colonized by the Portuguese but became an independent nation in 1975. Thank you for this video, I wonder if you know about the Beta Israel peoples? Would you please do a video explaining their link to being Jewish please. I am from an island country in the Caribbean but I have the customs and oral history of the being Jewish. Tracing my roots my family slave history supports the story and has this on their slave owners taxation details and part of their identification. The word Hebrew or Jew is entered.

Cabo Verde/Cape Verde is a country in Africa they are part of the African Union and they play in the African cup of Nations and in the Qualifiers they play FIFA qualifiers under African region. They are independent and are not dependent on Portugal the way you make it out to be. At one point in time almost every country in Africa was a colony of some European country so... Saying for example Nigeria is a dependent of Britain makes ABSOLUTELY no sense.

Oh yeah, tons of Cape Verde people in Rhode Island, and also Southern Massachusetts, Brockton, Fall River, New Bedford. I believe this is because these areas already had a large Portuguese population present. The Portuguese were here because of the fishing and in the past whaling industry. Easier to adjust if some people already speak your language in the area. So would be an attractive area to migrate to.

Yes you are right. I'm from Rhode Island and my great grandma and grandfather came to Rhode Island from the Island Brava. My family is the Barros family. When they came over my grandma was very young. I never asked my great grandma Barros why they left Brava to come to RI. Yet it's true there were alot of Portuguese in RI. So that could be one of the reasons. I do know that they wanted to give there 11 children a better life. Unfortunately my great grandfather passed away when they were all young and before he got to see his youngest son born. So I never got to meet him. Yet I'm so happy they came here because I have a wonderful family and was able to have one of the most amazing fathers I could of ever asked for.

Yes infact a lot of Cape Verdeans have Moroccan 🇲🇦 Narragansett and Mashpee blood which is a lot of times the reason why they have an identity crisis because back in 1416 when Portuguese people colonized it and it was already uninhabited by the African slaves that’s brought there but they’re really Hebrew Israelites 🤷🏽‍♂️💯

Cape Verde saw Jews settling there as a the result of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions. In the 19th and 20th centuries Jews from Gibraltar and Morocco settled there. During the colonial period (that is, beginning in the 15th century) Cape Verde received lançados (thrown-out ones) who were Crypto-Jews or “New Christians” whose ancestors had been forced to convert.

Hi all! I was just watching the episode with Tinesha who was exploring her Cape Verdean ancestry. Having lived in R.I. for several years, l can tell you with a certainty that the Cape Verde an community in that state and in southeastern Massachusetts (and probably Connecticut) is very strong, vibrant, and prolific. The Cape Verde people first came to this country (on the east coast anyway) following the great Whaling industry that was centered around Fall River, MA. and Providence,R.I. back in the 18th and 19th and even the early 20th centuries. This was because Cape Verdeans have a history of being excellent boatmen. This stems from the facts that they're island dwellers and they've had extensive contact with the peoples of the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal had particularly good nautical experience back in the day. That's why there are a lot of Cape Verdeans people living on the east coast of the U.S. Check it out in one of many encyclopedias on the Internet. L.Knight

Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) became independent in 1975, when Portugal left all its African colonies after the 1974 Carnation Revolution. Her pronunciation of the word "Verde" is closer to the standard European Portuguese pronunciation. Contrary to Brazilians (who also speak Portuguese) and to Spaniards, we tend to reduce non-stressed vowels to the point of almost being inaudible. In the word "Verde", the stress is in the first syllable, "Ver", so the "de" is very soft and quick. But the way she says the "e" in "Ver" is not correct, i.e., not according to any Portuguese (or Brazilian Portuguese) pronunciation. The correct "e" is closer to the French pronunciation of "et". So, Jarrett gets the first syllable closer to our pronunciation, but she closer on the second syllable.

Thank you for the in-depth reply! I really messed up with not realizing they were an independent country, but now I know! One of the unfortunate sides of doing reactions like this, I'll usually do only a little bit of research on the subject with a focus on the population make-up (partly due to time constraints and partly to avoid swaying my reaction). This is probably a good learning point for me to change that up a bit.

@@GeneaVlogger I already commented this on some other of your videos, but I'm not sure if you read it, so here it goes again: I'm from Vila Real, Portugal, the town (if I understood you correctly) where you for some reason believe your Nunes Vaz side "ultimately" comes from. If you want help on that search, maybe I can be that help; in the past few years I became an amateur genealogist of sorts, so I'm quite accustomed to read old Portuguese records (16th century onwards).

Yes, I have seen your comment about this but have not had time to work on researching my Nunes Vaz line unfortunately. This link between the Nunes Vaz family and Vila Real comes from the book LA NATION JUIVE PORTUGAISE: Livourne, Amsterdam, Tunis 1591-1951 by Lionel Levy (amzn.to/3AMMGEH). I also am unsure of what we would even look for to connect to my family tree with any reliability. We do have some family names which connect to Cadiz, but even so I have yet to have time to continue following that path either. If you do find mention of a Nunes Vaz family in Vila Real that might be connection, but with both of those being such common surnames I imagine many people had that name combination from different unconnected families but I could be wrong.

Cape Verde is considered the Western most point of Africa. It received it's independence from Portugal on July 5, 1975. My father was from Cape Verde and my DNA does show the split I have with Portugal and African ancestors on his side. People need to realize that Cape Verde was a stop in the slave trade. Not to mention, it was also a stop over for many pirates and other sailors. There are more Cape Verdeans in Massachusetts and Rhode Island than there is in Cape Verde. Many Cape Verdeans came to New England on Whaling ships. Also many worked in the Cranberry Bogs on Cape Cod. What I found interesting, when I got my matches, I had 2,000 4th cousins or closer and 98% of those, were on my Cape Verdean side.

So, AncestryDNA just updated earlier this month and took my Cape Verde ancestry off of my map - even though my great grandfather came directly from Cape Verde. He was born and raised there and so were my great-great grandparents. They calculated one more percent for Senegal (making it 10%) - and adjusted other results, as well. I just find it interesting that they completely took away the Cape Verdean community. I do have 3% Portuguese and 3% Spanish now vs 4% for both before.

There is even a photo of a young girl in an encyclopedia that could surely pass for a close relative to semi-dopleganger of my late mom but only 4% of that (Malian) showed up in my pre updated Ancestry chart and then completely disappeared with the 2 successive updates. Also, out of pages and pages of matches, only 1 person - my father's first cousin- shares the "red herring" 1.7% of C. Asia. Can you help or point me to resources to figure this out. With the raw data upload, My Heritage came up with a substantial 11.5% Kenyan, seemingly out of the blue but never seen on Ancestry. Sign me confused.

Cabo Verde only started to have human population around 500 years ago. It used to be a slave trading port, shipping African slaves to mostly all America. The major ethnicity will be from Africa, then Europe, some from Asia. So a person can be from Cabo Verde but not really be from Cabo Verde. Should be the same as most of the Americas. Cabo Verde is a beautiful country to visit where it is frequent for a darker skin black couple to have a very light skin blue eyes, son or daughter, or vice versa, and no one will question, because of the ancestry. Has nice beaches, steep mountains, an active volcano, good food, nice people, great music, and a lot of fish. Hot and dry weather year round. Used to have a Jewish town (maybe more), but they have left. Cabo Verde is independent since 75.

hey im just curious if theres a gene tht stops you from going grey or bald and less aging? both my dad and his dad are full finnish with no grey and full head of hair, both age less then the average male their age and both lived stressful lives with heavy drinking, smoking. oddly this gene seems to only be on the male side altho the women dont bald, they age regularly with grey hair altho i hear childbirth can affect this and cause other issues like new allergies for example. my brother however did not get this gene as he is balding, itd be interesting if i carried rhe gene and if i had a son and they get it. so is it something discovered?

🇨🇻❤️ 🇨🇻 When you say the “big” thing for us Cape Verts is the European ancestry along with the jewish ancestry that’s misinformation the beautiful thing about us CVs are is that we a mixture of many different things you usually arent going to find two kriolus that have the exact same mixture and it also depends on what island your from as well some CVs have more Spanish and a small percentage of African ancestry some CVs have more african ancestry and small amount of spanish ancestry some CVs damn near are half and half but 90% of us are always going to have Senegal or Mali and Portugal or Italy ancestry doesn’t say cape verdean but when you look at what’s listed it shows the CV ancestry im full Cape Verdean and it shows me on Ancestry at 21% Southern Italy, 13% senegal, 12% Portugal, 9% Mali 8% Nigerian but my mom is 25% southern Italy 18% Senegal 14% Portugal with 3% Northern Africa,Nigeria and Benin we are a mixture of so many different things that’s what’s great about us we are Cape Verdean thats it thats all

Thank you for giving more information about Cape Verde and your results. Although I should note that you seem to have misunderstood what I was saying at that part when I say 'the big thing'. I wasn't saying that European and Jewish ancestry is the 'big thing' for Cape Verdeans, I was pondering whether or not she would have any European or Jewish percentage in her admixture that might be coming from her Cape Verdean ancestry. So when I say 'the big thing' (15:48), I am really saying 'the main question in mind' - whether or not there is European and/or Jewish percentages and could any of those be coming from her Cape Verdean ancestry. It is a common thing to do when dealing with ethnicity admixtures from DNA tests, consider population groups that have been a part of an ancestral area/region that might then show up within the percentages.

@@mariarezendes8763 It could also be coming from her African American ancestry Most Africans are part European. Genetic studies show that the average African American is around one quarter European with around 1/3 of African American men having European Y Chromosomes. Ancestry is good for finding matches but when it comes to the breakdown of DNA ethnicity 23andme is more accurate. My great grandparents were from Brava, Cape Verde and Brava shows up for me on 23andme. The Cape Verde Islands was a Portuguese colonized and became independent in 1975. Many Jewish families came to the islands during the Inquisition that went on in Portugal from the 1500's onward. The east coast of the US (MA, RI, NY, ME, CT) have many CV communities (New Bedford, Onset, etc.) due to the Whaling culture between Cape Verde and the US. Ancestry does not specifically target any of the Cape Verde Islands in the ethnicity breakdown reports.

I'm not too familiar with the population make-up of Madagascar but I could definitely see Asian ancestry making its way there. It might be a good idea to seek out someone who specializes in Madagascar genealogy to help you look into it. You’ll sometimes read that Asians who came to Madagascar were Malay, which would suggest that they were from the modern country of Malaysia. Genome studies have not established the origin of the Asian ancestors of the Malagasy. Currently, it is assumed to be within Southeast Asia, and more likely in the Southeast Asian islands rather than the mainland. It is also believed that the Asians who arrived in Madagascar were already a mixed population.

I have little faith in the way they come up with their ethnicities. That is why my cousins and siblings and myself will take familytree dna tests (Y and the X tests). Ancestry is still behind the others when it comes to communities for the African continent. There are a lot for African Americans but only 1 African genetic community so far for the whole continent, and 1 for Asians in Africa. I asked about why this is and they claim it's lack of Africans testing with trees, and I'm skeptical of that reasoning. My mum for example has way more Malagasy matches on Ancestry than she does on 23andme yet 23andme were able to pinpoint her Malagasy roots and Ancestry currently aren't able to. Ancestry were pretty spot on when it came to her English heritage though, which is all Dorset, Somerset and Devon going back as far as I can find.

Between Race and Ethnicity by Marilyn Halter discusses Cape Verdean immigrants from the middle 19th to middle 20th century. It's my understanding that since Cape Verde was a Portuguese province, many of the immigrants were classified as Portuguese (and thus "white" in terms of a paper record).on arrival but many were considered Africans in daily interactions after they arrived.
