My Cats Get a Bath!

My Maine Coon cats are getting a bath today. How will they react to the water and what will they look like when they come out?
Bathing cats can be a sensitive topic, so here is some background info to avoid misunderstandings:
1. I have been planning to give my cats a bath for a while to remove some grease and make them nice and clean. I bathe them 1 - 2 times per year. It was 8 months since last time. I did not do it to make a video, I just decided to film the process and I would have done it even if I didn't film it.
2. I am definitely no expert in cat baths. The purpose is just to make them clean and this method works fine for that. There might be better and more advanced ways to do it, but this works for me and my cats.

I love it how Buster didn't care about the bath, and he still looked like Buster after the bath. He should have gone first to show the others how its done.

Well, that was a nice pain-free episode! Your cats clearly don’t feel at all traumatized, and with the amount of fur they have (and their busy lives) an occasional rinse off is probably needed. Luna came out best, as she is pretty shorthaired and so didn’t look like a starving waif. Buster retained his dignity throughout. He is tiny under all that fur. Ada just thought it was a good show. And you are darn right she didn’t need a bath, given that she can’t go two metres without one of the four adults giving her a tongue-lashing. Her problem is being too clean. 💕🇨🇦

I used to have a one of these cats and he loved taking baths in full tub of warm water, he loved it so much he would jump into bath tub after I was getting out and left the plug in I’d always have to bring an extra towel just in case. He loved the blow dryer to dry his fur, he loved the brush, he even liked having the hair around his toe beans trimmed. The key is to start when they are eight weeks old so they learn that’s it’s nice and good for them and so they learn it’s painful to have knots in their fur and matted foot pads full of mud or cat litter or a dingle berry backside.

I have never bathed a cat. They do a great job themselves. I do brush them as needed. They’re not fond of tummy brushing so that is where the clumps congregate. I usually shave their tummies. You can’t tell because the fur on the back and side is so long. I will wipe them down with cool water if it’s warm but we have air conditioning so that’s not often. Never felt the need to bathe them.

Had a Japanese Bobtail years ago, who needed bathing twice yearly (due to the itching from shedding). She _never_ would have put up with this kind of bathing.... Her favorite part was being dried off with a _blow drier_ at the end. 😸

You are braver than me, sir. I always had a professional groomer help me. They never were agreeable to the blow dryer so towel drying was always done.

Thanks Dad for sharing..they always look so fluffed and folded(my family's phase for a bath!!!).I thought you took them to the groomer often!!🙂🙂 they always look great for being so fluffy!! Dexter definitely had a lot to say during his wash!! Freya so sweet!! I can see Luna and Buster have gone thru this experience!! Will be interesting to see how Ada will handle her 1st bath when the time comes!! Also I'm amazed they didn't run under the bed when they 1st noticed you going to start!!! you take such good care of your kitty family🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

yes at times they need a bit extra cleaning. poor Mr. Buster he looked like he got caught in a down poor! do you ever use a blow drier to start the process of drying? or do they dry quickly? nice video.

I still don't see the point. We've had cats for over 40 years and only once or twice have I seen the need to bathe any of them, usually after some diarrhea probs. Other than this they've been taking care of themselves just fine.

My previous cat had arthritis so he mostly stopped grooming himself because it would hurt to bend to reach all the spots. He would only do his neck and face. He was a shorthair, so rubbing him down with a warm wet washcloth was enough. But he would definitely get a little stinky without it.

@@pushkinthewhitecatNow, that's an altogether different situation. But a fit and healthy cat doesn't need any such treatment. Listen to Dexter's cries. Pure distress in what he has experienced as a wholly unwarranted assault. As much 'fun' as a visit to the vet, just totally pointless.

I've never understood people bathing animals except maybe in extreme situations like being sprayed by a skunk or something. I believe God created them with the innate ability to clean themselves. We tend to treat them as children but they are not. We adopt them now and so on. There are actual humans that we don't treat as well such as slaves back in the day who weren't even considered as good as animals but were created in God's image. Of course, we love them (animals) and enjoy them but they are not people. I realize I'm probably in the minority in this respect. I do enjoy the videos though because they are beautiful creatures.

It's not a thing everywhere. I grew up in Europe and bathing your cat is completely unheard of. If a dog gets himself stinky from rolling around in manure or something dead, yes of course it will get shampooed and hosed down. Luckily no skunks in Europe : ) But otherwise we just brush our dogs. No bathing. They just smell the way they do, they're dogs and dogs smell. If it bothers you, don't get a dog. One reason I personally prefer cats : ) no stink.

I find as well as my family very very disturbing!!!!! In the past you have had very calming and relaxing videos. Cats do not need baths unless necessary!! It is very traumatic to a cat. When I was watching this disturbing video my cats ran and hid. Just like the whiskers. Disturbing!! I hope this is not what caused buster whiskers to curl. So so sad,. Poor Ada. What she might endure being breed😢

Could you show the full process for one of them? I bathe our ragdoll every couple of months, when her fur feels less silky and more dry and bulky. But it’s kind of a mess figuring out if I’ve rinsed her enough and drying is really troublesome. She holds onto water like a sponge-a big, willful, angry sponge on legs. I blow dry and brush her as long as she can stand it, then turn her loose. Anyway, I like watching how others do it and try to learn some tricks.

Watch one of the cat videos on “Girl with the Dogs”. Or “Girl with the Dogs 2”, where she does longer videos with a goal of education. Plus, she is smart and entertaining, and very professional. 💕🇨🇦

@@lynnjasen9727 I know her videos well. 🙂 I use her “nasty critter” shampoo, “fluff-off” conditioner, and “happy hoodie.” The hoodie actually helps quite a bit for blow-drying-my cat stays much more calm. At this point the process probably goes as smoothly as it could. Kitty doesn’t like it at all, but she’s not yowling and fighting, either.
