his whole relationship with miss goldberg was based off admiration and power that he had/wanted to have over her (e.g her giving into his demands to play Colombus), and him miscontruing those feelings as romantic/sexual interest. even when he "raped" her he wasn't interested in her at all, only her glasses.

I think the lyric about cutting her lip on the sofa doesn't have any deep symbolic meaning at all because immediately afterwards he says "that's it for girls." It's as if he's looking for any excuse to break up with her, and the slightest turn off of cutting her lip sends him over the edge. "The sofa was blue before" she bleeds on the couch and it grosses him out reminding him how much he doesn't like girls.

I know “I played a game / she was as cute as a dime and couldn’t spell / I asked her to spell my name / That’s it for girls” is a reference to how Marvin would look for any reason not to be with a girl ("Oh, if she can't spell my name I'll leave her", fully knowing she can't spell, and so forth) but I choose to believe that he simply embarrassed himself SO badly one time that he decided to never speak to a woman again

Do you reckon that the ‘Word’ is whizzer? OR alternatively is it Marvin’s own homosexuality? I question jf it’s whizzer because not only is the word not referred to as a girl or she/her pronouns but it is also referred to as a queer little thing
@skektchydraws3 ай бұрын
AH I also forgot that in this whizzer is only mentioned. He doesn’t appear, so in this third of the trilogy he is just ‘a word’
@Marsbar-008 күн бұрын
This might be an awful interpretation but I figured it was about him discovering the term ‘homosexuality’ (or something of that nature) and immediately identifying with the label, but at the same time feeling this overwhelming shame and regret because of it. So when he says “that’s it for words” it’s like he’s saying he doesn’t want to acknowledge it? Or maybe he means he’s still afraid to verbalize to his feelings (i.e. come out), even after finding a label that fits him? I may be missing something here but that’s what I came up with

Here's the thing, William Finn kinda contradict himself: He described Marvin in the in trousers book as bisexual, but he describes Marvin in the musicals as, well, a homosexual. (At least in Falsettos it's more present this theme) So, guys, stop saying that people that have either view of Marvin's character is wrong, because sexuality is a fluid thing. Maybe Marvin could've felt in his younger years that he was Bi, but then felt like he was more on the gay side. Or maybe he was always gay, maybe he's still bisexual. In trousers is a more poetic musical, so take it's word more softly, be open for different interpretations!
@cal22293 жыл бұрын
I read the in trousers book online somewhere, and I don’t remember him being referred to as bisexual there? I’m not trying to argue I’m just curious which part(s) refer to him as bi.
@astaroth_angel Жыл бұрын
wdym in trousers book? like the script? i dont know of an in trousers book but i know 4 a fact william finn would never call marvin bisexual as he has described marvin as a gay man. plus he has never loved women. if you’re referring 2 the in trousers script then he has definitely not said marvin is bisexual as sexualities arent specifically named in the script (as it was the 80s)

goddamn you’re missing the point. don’t block people from our community, welcome them to learn about it. through guarding media we only leave people out and accomplish NOTHING. every single person deserves to listen to the musical. it doesn’t belong to us. william finn wouldn’t want that. he didn’t write 25th annual just for little kids. everyone can get messages out of songs, everyone can learn about communities and struggles through a story. sure, straight people might not relate to what this song is about, but that is okay!
