Fantastic. I love fixing, modifying and generally tinkering with internal combustion engines of all types. I've also been reading about their history ever since I was a young child. That said, the story of Rudolph Diesel is one of the most intriguing I've ever come across in my research. All of the earlier information I've come across said that his death was a "suspicious" suicide, but never really offered much beyond that. I have to read this book immediately. Can't wait.

I bought this book on the back of his interview with Andrew Klavan a few days ago. Weirdly, my wife wanted two of your most recent adding to the purchase too. She said something to the effect of, "I'm normally extremely sceptical about any book where the author puts a picture of himself on the cover, but I'll make an exception for Gad". It's a bit late over here, so I'll be listening to this on my way to work in the morning.

Before 1920 half of all scientific papers were first published in German. This exemplfies the importance of German inventive power at that time. And after all not only the gazoline motor (Benz and foremost Daimler) and the Diesel motor were German inventions, but also the spark plug for the gazoline motor by Bosch..

Germans are still the foremost engineers. Go into almost any industrial plant and you will find German machinery.

Gad reminds me of one of my favourite quotes, a description I read of Catch 22 author Joseph Heller: "...he smelled of the world... you could smell the world on him." I find it easy to imagine Gad in a foxhole, in a Church, in a dive bar, at a banquet, watching an orchestra or a punk band, on stormy waters or on calm, at an ambassador's reception or a rowdy wedding reception, giving a lecture or a eulogy (but never a stump speech). A friend of mine described him as "the best possible juror", which I get the impression Gad might reject and was possibly my friend (knowingly) trying to sound a bit clever and wise (Hi Dennis!), but it also resonated with me when he said it 😂.

It seems like you both need some serious edification as to the differences between spark ignition gasoline engines and stratified charge compression ignition Diesel engines. In a nutshell, the gasoline engine varies the amount of air/fuel mixture drawn into its combustion chamber to control is power output, which is then ignited inside a combustion chamber by an electrically produced spark. This ensuing rapid gas expansion forces the piston down the cylinder, thus turning the crankshaft to produce rotary energy, which then turns the drive wheels of a car, etc. With a diesel engine its power output is controlled only by varying the amount of liquid diesel injected into the engine whilst the quantity of air drawn into its cylinder always remains constant (for a given speed). So at low power outputs the amount of fuel injected into the diesel engine is only very small, which is why it's called a 'stratified charge engine'. This fuel/air charge is then ignited by the heat generated by highly compressing the air/fuel mixture, which then pushes the piston down the bore, etc. etc. And so, the reason why this engine is so efficient is, that not only does it feature a stratified charge, especially at lower power outputs, the fuel/air charge is significantly more compressed than in the gasoline engine at time of ignition. And since the amount of power available to do useful work in a combustion engine is directly proportional to the density of the fuel/air mixture at time of ignition, more of the energy contained in the liquid fuel is available to do useful work. The reason why diesel engines are more heavily constructed is, they have to be or components would break. Higher compression ratios require stiffer, stronger components, generally achieved by throwing more metal at components during the design stage. Effective compression ratios during differing power levels for a gasoline engine vary from ~= 1:1 at throttle closed position, to about 10:1 at wide open throttle position, whereas the diesel engine always runs with a compression ratio of about 19:1; a difference which even the totally uninitiated should be able to recognise.

Kerosene and diesel are 3 molecules different. F1 petrol engine has a 2.5 inch stroke with a 4” dia. Piston. Diesel engine will have the same piston with a 12” stroke this is a quick idea for understanding Torque needed for moving heavy loads. A diesel engine can run on Natural Gas without emmissions.

Diesel may have invented the compression ignition engine, but it was Clessie Cummins who made it practical.

So many technical things i want to add. Id be literally leaving a book in the comments. . The years of the diesel before the invention of forced intake air. really restricted the amount of power made per amount of displacement. A big part of why you dont see many cars with them. . Basically Without a turbocharger or blower/supercharger, a diesel is limited to around 18 to 23 hp per liter of engine displacement. Thats relatively modern numbers, early 1900s would be even less hp per liter. . The original ford diesel engines sold in the 1980s are 6.9L and 160hp at the very most. as none where turbocharged tell 1992 and 1994.5 for the computer controlled versions, that are a given to be turbo.

Sometimes great artist do not publish much of their work, like for instance Franz Kafka who even ordered that his unpublished work (which was by far most of his writing) to be burt after his demise. And Van Gogh could never earn a living by painting.

Wasn't the support for the suicide theory that Diesel was a pacifist and was distraught that his engine was being employed in engines of war?

@@saltburner2 NOx levels from Diesel engines will always be higher than in gasoline engines. We managed to reduce them in Europe, because our Diesel fuel has low sulphur levels, but they're still there some, NOx will never be low enough. Particle filters took care of the cancer-inducing particles, but they're too expensive for the kind of prices you're willing to pay for a passenger car in America. In Europe, they were offset because they allowed manufacturers to reduce CO2 emissions, which got them around carbon road taxes. We had a period between 1998 and 2017 when Diesel engines made up the bulk of sales in certain passenger model segments (SUVs, executive cars and near-luxury models).
