After several days, dozens of hours, and thousands of dollars invested into the Range Rover Supercharged Engine Rebuild, and we started it; and it's still out of time. I performed multiple tests to see how broken it is, and if we sustained any additional valve damage; and I find a major surprise along the way... Maybe its time for me to stop buying Land Rovers

Sam, I just sent a message to your email address with more details. Please read it, I really think it could help you. The timing is out on your RR. Why: I strongly suspect you have not set the timing chain tensioners correctly. There is a lot of conflicting info on the internet about how to do it. And after doing it wrong twice, I can confirm how it should be done. Please see the video on YT "Jaguar XF 5.0 Timing Chain Tensioner". Note that you re-install the grenade pin, then push the piston in some more. BUT THE REALLY IMPORTANT BIT: at the end of the video it shows that there should be a click from the tensioner. To make this happen, you MUST take a crowbar (or similar) and lever the chain guide away from the tensioner, until the you hear this click from the tensioner (internal ratchet). That is when the tensioner is correctly set. It will feel like you're going to break the chain guide, but it is strong enough to take it. I didn't believe this step was needed; that's why I did it wrong twice. If you don't hear the click, you can verify the tensioner is set by trying to push the chain guide against the tensioner. It should be SOLID. I can assure you, on these engines oil pressure alone will not extend the tensioner piston far enough. In summary you need to: 1) Strip down and remove, reset and re-install the chain tensioners. 2) Check the tiny metal gauze filters in the ends of the camshafts for debris. If these are blocked, you will have the same symptoms as a failed VVT solenoid/actuator (which Nick checked for). Oil supply to your VVTs would be blocked. 3) Put the engine back in time. 4) Install the cam and crank locking tools (if you don't have them already, buy them. 100% worth the money). 5) Pull the grenade pin on the tensioners. 6) Lever the chain guide away from the tensioner until it clicks (as described above). 7) Reinstall the VVTs (workshop manual attached inc torque specs). Note also the order in which you must tighten the bolts. The guy in the Atlantic British video shows the process perfectly. 8) Remove cam and crank locking tools. 9) Fit new crank bolt. 10) Turn engine over twice by hand. Re-insert locking tools and check they still fit.

This^^^ The whole procedure was such a mess, I've been blown further away by every additional video. The AJ133 is bread and butter at my shop. Correctly setting the tensioners, and properly preloading the VVT actuators are the two most overlooked issues. At the end of the day, it's just a big Ford designed V8 with a blower strapped on. Yeah it's got direct injection and variable timing but that's it, period. These engines are so robust and simple in comparison to performance offerings from other manufacturers, there are just some very specific procedures that you need to learn and it becomes a breeze. I too tried to reach out, and leave comments explaining some massive concerns. This car could have been saved so easily from the start, Sam just needed someone who actually understands the service procedures from JLR, not the "expert" he had been featuring.

I did a complete rebuild. I redid the timing a few times on this engine before I thought it was correct. It is a lot easier with two people and getting the cam lock in place is obviously imperative. Giggling the cams while tightening helped. Then having hold tension on the chain while releasing the chain tensioner and then tighten the sprockets all the time tension is being held. That worked for me.

They simply wouldn't tell you about it. Respect for samcrac for putting it up anyways . He could've simply waited till he could come back and re adjust it. Just one of those things. The fact that leak down test was fantastic and the compression numbers on that bank were so consistent is a good sign. I bet you get this vehicle up and running flawlessly this next go around. If you check the timing & it’s bang on, then check the cams. The cam lobes are pressed on the cam & if piston/valve contact happens, sometimes the cam lobes move from their original positions. So timing marks will be correct, but the lobes will not be in the right positions. Cheers from the UK.

Yep reason why I change the cam shaft as well. It could have jump one tooth over when he released pressure on the chain as tensioner released and tool as well could have affected it, as well as had that happen on me before. Always turn over engine a couple time and see if still lines up. Seeing the results on the leak down test. You get it running perfect. Doubt it enough to cause damage. Just have a go at it again.

@ThePatUltra On Older Engines, True. When I had my BMW M52B25 Cams in my Hands, gosh dang were that long camshafts. And one Piece. Most german manufacturers stick to the classic way, but some other manufacturers are a bit more willing to experiment. Consider: Assembled camshafts are firstly cheaper to make (no fancy machining the lobes in), 'cause you can machine just a long "rod", drill and cut all the oilpassages in and then put the lobes on (cheaper and less expensive casting if any), they can easily adjusted mid production (just use other lobes, adjust the opening/closing times a bit without the need to make new casting forms) and also they can be modular (same lobe profile on many engines, so you only have one intake and one exhaust lobe to engineer and make). Those things are engineered to be cheaper produced and shave of some costs. Nowadays even assembled crankshafts can be a thing, but only in the ultra high performance aftermarket sector, OEM hollowed out crankshafts are the newest thing, to be honest, the hollowed out ones are more stable.
@likhwadube5937
@likhwadube5937 4 жыл бұрын
ThePatUltra I’m sure because I’m putting together a Land Rover engine right now & the lobes are pressed on. If you look closely at the edges of the lobes, you will see groves that the lobes are pressed onto. Why manufacturers do that, I have no idea. They seem to be lighter so it might be a weight saving. I put together a 2.0 TFSI engine recently which had pressed on lobes. Look at the Humble Mechanic video where he talks of TFSI engine failure, he even says so himself what I’m telling you. Loads of engines have pressed on lobes, Don’t know why you haven’t come across one yet. Not ALL the lobes will move when it happens, just one or two cylinders. They are not knocked loose because its a VERY TIGHT fit. So the lobes will spin for a few teeth & because the lobes sit on grooves they stay intact.

A mechanic I once met told me of how he towed a land rover that was just out of warranty to the shop because it changing gears weirdly (auto box was skipping gears and changing gears at weird times). Apparently the land rover techs said that they would have to change a wiring harness at the cost of £5000 and that it wouldn't be guaranteed to fix the problem. Bear in mind that it was literally just out of warranty. Apparently the owner sold it and bought another car. It's a shame land rovers seem to be so plagued with issues as they're really good looking cars but unless you're a millionaire with a desire to literally throw money away, they're just too unreliable.

It cleared out just fine. We have two at home and both do the same exact thing. I also must say they're the only ones that do that when the timming belt gets changed, all the others work just fine from the start. I looked at a 16 valve 4 cylinder Rover that a mechanic had rebuilt after a belt breakage but wouldn't start. All four cylinders were around 75psi even though all valves had been recut and seated properly. It was when I examined the cams that I realised he had put the exhaust cam where the inlet cam should be and vice versa. Changed them over and the engine ran perfectly. Could it be something as silly as that which is why 4 cylinders on the opposite bank have twice the compression than the other bank? It is strange that the 4 cylinders are down what seems to equal an amount for mechanical damage! Just a Transatlantic suggestion from Bonnie Scotland.

I think you're in the right track with it being a tiny bit out of time. It won't necessarily destroy valves, but it will run like crap and give low compression. My seadoo 4tec motor has a slot in the cam gear and you can turn it to advance timing. The way you know you have it in the right spot is with a comp test. The readings vary significantly depending on where you set it. Also, I worked on an older rover and the VANOS bolts were threaded such so that the action of the motor always worked to loosen them. One got loose within a day and was throwing similar codes. Had to over tighten it and use red loctite.

I have done this job on an xj8 Jag 4.0 litre. It is NOT easy it a guaranteed success. Mine is an NA motor but basically the same. I had to make all of my own tools. I'm a shade tree mechanic. It is intimidating but doable. Give it another shot. Tensioning the chains before the tensioners are released is an absolute must to get the thing and proper time. good luck. The best thing you can do is to start this project immediately so that is is fresh in your mind how it comes apart and goes back together. Very difficult to swallow and do this after a failure like this but it is vital.

The "give it some time to smooth out" is a legit thing on Fords. For years when I would have to do random repairs on my brothers 3.0 Ranger, every time you disconnected the battery that truck would freak out and enter a learning phase. Give it 10 minutes, shut it off and restart it twice and it then ran like normal.

As per your question, if you had a bent valve you wouldn't make close compression and you'd see it in a leak down- if it's holding on the leak down and the numbers are close you don't have a bent valve. I'd be shocked to have bent valve's being out by a degree/tooth, think about the amount of flat consistent surface of a cam lobe when a motor is at TDC (assuming timing is set at TDC), it would have to be off a few teeth to have this thing start to open up valves. Set the timing right and it should run properly. I went through this on my silverado, broken cam tensioner- all I did to check if it had bent valves was set it TDC and pull the plugs- i blew air into the cylinders and I could hear it coming out the exhaust/intake. Turns out it had them bent in both heads so I had to pull both and replace the valves.

After watching a second time, it is totally the drivers side timing off. The chain or cam is out of phase. That is why compression is so low on all 4 cylinders. All 4 valves are never fully closed to compress the gas for an efficient burn, and to get the compression high like the passenger side 4 cylinders. So another timing Chain job maybe. I have faith it can be sorted on the cheap.
