I have watched several of your video's, you make this look so easy. But I know as with most things, it's not as easy as it looks. I want to get me a chip carving knife and try it.

Besides Butternut, which other woods would you recommend for chip carving letters?
@MyChipCarving6 жыл бұрын
Hello Zarra, white pine and aspen are good for chip carving. If you want a sample pack of assorted woods (bass/butternut/aspen/white pine) visit mychipcarving.com. Happy carving.

@gah1957 With large pieces I would work on the floor or on a low table. That way you can do the moving while the wood stays in one place. Plan ahead with your cuts so you can move as needed in a smooth motion 866-444-6996 Marty

What kind of wood is that? Would this work on Mahogany?

What type of wood is preferred for wood carving....???
@MyChipCarving5 жыл бұрын
Basswood (linden) is best. This wood is tight grained and soft and creates beautiful smooth surfaces! You can get some at mychipcarving.com

How difficult is it to carve poplar?
@TameTusker8 жыл бұрын
That was instructive. Thanks you. Sir, can this be done on bamboo? Just curious?:)
@MyChipCarving8 жыл бұрын
+TameTusker Silly The wood I am carving on is basswood (linden) which has a Janka Hardness rating of 400. Bamboo has a Janka rating of 1650 which is much too hard for chip carving like I'm showing you in this video. Look for a wood softer than bamboo especially when you are learning.
@TameTusker8 жыл бұрын
MyChipCarving Thank you,sir...for replying to my post. I never knew that there was an quantitative index for hardness...thanks once again!:)

MyChipCarving I looked up Wikipedia about the Janka rating..learnt something NEW...thanks!!!:):) I live in Canada ( I am an Indian with little knowledge about N American wood!) Which kind of wood would be ideal to start with?
@TameTusker8 жыл бұрын
Perhaps basswood you mentioned?:)

Eastern White Pine, Balsa and Cuipo have a have a lower Janka rating then basswood?

For lettering I use my Platinum Modified Knife. Less metal on the spine makes for chatter-free curves! mychipcarving.com/?s=modified+knife+platinum&post_type=product

Dose it matter what wood you use?
@MyChipCarving5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it does. Basswood (linden) is perfect because it is tight grained and relatively soft. Perfect for chip carving! Clear, northern grown basswood practice boards are available at mychipcarving.com

I'm guessing Oak would be very difficult to carve? I'm from Ireland and learned an Irish poem in school 25 years ago about an Oak tree. I have often thought about carving it into a piece of oak with acorns and oak leaves also carved onto it.
@MyChipCarving9 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith, using the chip carving techniques I use would be very hard in red oak. You would need to use chisels and a mallet. Butternut is a nice carving wood and has more pronounced grain. It is a good chip carving wood.
@keithscrafts9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. What we have access to here in Ireland is Lime. It's the only wood available to us for carving but it isn't plentiful.

@NickytheNaz Mahogany is hard to chip carve. I've done one mahogany chip carving and it was my first and last. In my lessons I'm carving basswood, the premier wood to start carving on. 866-444-6996 Marty
