If you wanted to, you could try using black fabric to create strip lights with that. Cut some half circles and use velcro along the rim of the umbrella.

To add, if someone has more money to spend but really wants to milk their money and stay on a tight budget, for about $500-600, one can get an 85/105/130/165cm in both silver and white, with diffusion covers, plus a two opaque shoot through umbrellas also. Add in variables in distance from the subject and you'd have an incredible array of both control and lighting options for a relatively small price. Throw in a couple of cheap, small hard light reflectors and you'll have a stellar array of kit.

I actually expected that recommendation. The versatility of a deep reflective umbrella is really impressive. That being said for an amateur without a studio I guess the 160cm umbrella might be a bit big. I was kind of surprised by the actual size of my 125cm umbrella. And there's no way you'll be using that on location without an assistant who's preferably a bit on the heavier side or they'll Mary Poppins to the horizon. For some of the umbrellas you can get some diffusor covers making it somewhat of a large "octa box" (who moste of the time don't actually have 8 sides anymore - why does that name still stick?).

like another user commented, i'd be interested in your opinion on a silver umbrella plus diffusor sock - with the sock it should be rather comparable to the white umbrella, actually giving even softer light. without the sock it would give a bit more contrast for a different look in fashion shoots, thus aiding in versatility.

Great (as always)! My go-to budget modifier is a 7 foot silver umbrella- with a diffuser 'sock' - it gives the option for a very large soft source or a punchier source with the sock off. Curious if you have ever done the Octa versus 7-foot with diffuser 'match-up??

I have a generic deep white umbrella in this size and appreciated the tips about adjusting the spread to get harder or softer light. One thing prospective buyers should know about these umbrellas is that (at least on the brand I bought) the ribs are fiberglass and it is possible to break them, especially if you have to carry your lighting gear around in a car boot (ask me how I know this) so handle them with care if you travel to locations with them...

You can check Godox UB-165S. It is 165cm silver umbrella. They also sell the diffusor (DPU-165T) separately. This is my setup and I love the light coming from this big light source! It is pretty soft with a bit punchy. The diffusor makes the light totally soft.

Nice video Karl. To be honest I'm very satisfied with the octabox 150 that I didn't even bother thinking of buying the 160cm as some fellow photographers suggested me. It is indeed softer that the octabox, but for my work and the portrait I shoot, I find the differences kind of pointless to make that switch. Thanks for your advices though

@@VisualEducationStudio Wouldn't silver reflective umbrella with a diffuser provide something more similar to 150 softbox in respect of the light quality? (yeah, I know the diffuser stretches the budget ;P ) I'm aware of the fact, that we are talking here about the modifiers within a specific price tag and reflective umbrellas are hard (or impossible) to beat in respect of versatility/price, but at the same time - what makes the umbrellas versatile (changing the position of a strobe in the umbrella), sometime makes it impossible to place the light as close to the subject/model, as I would with a softbox, as I get the rod in the frame :/ I do have 165 cm deep white reflective umbrella + diffuser (which - for the price - is an awesome modifier) and apart for that rod (in most cases it's not an issue) the only downside is the lack of a grid to limit the light spread (grid is way smaller and lighter than any v-flats or so, when you need to be mobile with the equipment). All in all - you hit the spot - if a budget is the deciding factor - go for the umbrella (as I did once ;) ). If you have the money - go for the octabox.
@VisualEducationStudio
@VisualEducationStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Actually if you had enough light power then the white one with a front diffuser would give a more homogenous result, a silver one would need another layer of internal diffusion to work as well and as homogenous as the Octabox 150. I'm not exactly sure how much the Octa is by comparison but I think it's worth the money for the space saving, ease of mobility, balance on a stand and as you mentioned easier to get closer to the subject.

1. When comparing the quality of light between a white umbrella and a silver umbrella of the same size, is the difference in the homogenous and soft quality of light in the former? 2. What are silver umbrellas good for? 3. Are umbrella modifiers generally suitable for automotive photography, or for shooting large objects like airplanes inside hangars?
@VisualEducationStudio
@VisualEducationStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the former is the softer and more homogenous, silver ones are used more where you need greater contrast (fashion). You wouldn't use either for car or product photography. Visit my site in the link below the video to learn more about that.

You won't gain much difference in quality of light over your 150 square other than better catchlights in the eyes and easier handling. The Octa150 is a great all round workhorse and not too bulky.

Love your work, you only scare me off sometimes when you say how much some of your equipment costs...I'm a big fan of the KISS method (Keep It Simple, Stupid) not just for cost, but for simplicity. I don't have a big studio or a big budget, yet.

We don't do affiliate links or stuff like that as you can never really trust anyone who does. We like to stay independent and to be honest I don't even know what brand this is, just some cheapy we found online. It's not difficult to find just search '160cm white reflective deep umbrella studio lighting'.

What if your budget was really tight? Elitist photographers: if you were successful you would "invest" in trustworthy equipment. 😒😒
@VisualEducationStudio

When you run photography as a business you generally invest in more expensive equipment simply because it allows you to be more efficient or provide better results and make you more money. It is business after all.

@@VisualEducationStudio I still don't get the saying, "gear doesn't matter" When obviously it does but it obviously does. Either you struggle with low cost gear or upgrade to get better results.
@VisualEducationStudio
@VisualEducationStudio 3 жыл бұрын
In previous videos I've referred to 'gear not mattering' when it comes to cameras as any modern DSLR or mirrorless is capable of turning out great results. When it comes to lighting gear also matters but largely for efficiency as apart from Parabolic reflectors I can modify light myself through knowledge of lighting to create a similar result, it will just take much longer to do it. The results would be the same and as I've demonstrated in many other videos there is also so much can be done with one light if you know what you are doing.

@@VisualEducationStudio I think I've seen you illustrate that in a product photography video. It was beautiful you made your own modifier with just some slats of wood and wax paper, three or four light sources and a hand made funnel. The end result was ofc high quality.
