"It sucks how a word that's supposed to mean happiness can somehow feel warped." - a line from More Happy Than Not. Its just that society gave an entirely different meaning and sort of a bad feeling to the word, that its kinda scary even if it just means happiness and being your true self.

Thanks for sharing your story, Doug. Remember to love yourself as much as we love you. There's no reason to feel pressured to "tell" anyone that you're gay. Live your life and do whatever makes you happy. 🐬

We love you and all your videos. You are such a polished talented speaker on KZfaq that it's amazing you had that much trouble telling people even as a young adult. But why do you have to be so good-looking and talented all at the same time and worry about telling people? That's the strange enigma that is you, Doug. Now you're telling people around the world and being such a good role model for so many millions of men and women. Congratulations on your wonderful accomplishments and your honesty with us all about all the parts of you.

I feel like it's interesting that you feel like you 'wimped out' by telling people the way you did but in reality there's no right or wrong way to do anything and any way it happens is fine :) Tbh I think your story is much more relatable to how everyone goes through telling people than like~ big announcements. It sucks that even these days it still is something that feels like 'a secret' that you need to let people know- hopefully that'll change soon with people like Doug sharing his story!

You shouldn't have to feel as though you need to tell everyone "I'm gay" The different ways you managed to let people know we're very casual and didn't make a bigger deal out of this small aspect of yourself than there needed to be. Congratulations

i've been out since i was 16 and i still struggle to say it all these years later(i'm 23). i'm super comfortable with my sexuality, and i've never had any self hate or self denial issues, but it's just incredibly hard to actually say the words "i'm gay". and although i am a bit on the flamboyant (or camp) side, most people still assume i'm straight, and that makes it even harder for me to come out. i think i just find the whole coming out situation a bit awkward, and that's what makes it so hard. i came out to my closest friends via text in order to avoid that awkwardness. and it gets even more awkward once they start asking questions

The thing to remember is that to the person coming out it's the biggest thing, but to those you are telling it probably doesn't matter. From my own experience you have to do it when you feel that the time is right for YOU, but as Doug says once you've ripped off that band-aid you'll feel so much better and things will get easier from there.

You know, Doug. The way you describe coming out to your friend in a text message by slipping in a masculine pronoun, by mentioning your boyfriend, by NOT saying "I'm gay," is exactly the way it should be. In the second decade of the 21st century, after all the hard work for gay rights and equality rights in general over the past 40 or so years, has been done, most people know they're going to bump into some gay people...frequently. So when some new friends suggest a Friday night out with their ladies and ask you along, tell them you'll check with

Thanks for sharing this Doug :) It's only really been the past few months that I've had the confidence and acceptance in myself to tell people that I identify as non-binary and am pansexual, and yeah I get what you mean about prolonging things making it harder. I guess I kind of wimped out with some people as well by just making KZfaq videos about these things and sharing them with my friends but that made the whole process a lot easier. Keep being you.

The thing that sucks is that you have to come out to pretty much every person you meet. Then you can be good friends with them and then you then then and they might act weird around you. This is for the rest of your life. However, I think that coming out give people the opportunity to treat other people who come out to them as a common thing.

Great video, Doug! I feel like I'm kinda similar in the sense that people can't tell that I'm gay and always assume I'm straight, which makes it harder to come out I think. I've always struggled to say the words "I'm gay" and usually do exactly the type of things you described. I'm proud and happy with who I am but just don't like making a big fuss about it.
