For those with the old pathfinder bottle kit. Filing those little nubbings on the handles off helps no end, and the handles still stay open in a fire.

Thanks for the video. A tip regarding the water pouch kit. I use a ss (gsi) cup, stanley cook pot and put a 32 oz Guyot BACKPACKER (tapered) SS water bottle in that. They all nest together and you have the dual water bottle and ss cooking option. They all fit in the water pouch nicely. And I also pack the sawyer mini water filter (additional 16 oz water pouch) for emergency use. Depending on your setup, you may be able to put the gsi cup on TOP so no "tight fit" and ripping issues. I wish all the best to you and yours.

I would love to own anything and everything Pathfinder, but aspects of this vid are much more in my budget/price range. I have developed my first cook kit based off your strong and creative recommendations of the stanley cook cup, combined with the $5 walmart cup and a 32 oz powerade bottle. Maybe one day things will be different but right now, like many of us, I have kids to feed, a wife and ex-wives to feed, mortgage payments, property taxes, student loan and tax debts to pay, etc. Thank you for all you do and keep the good stuff coming, brother!

Great video. All the kits look good. I have several different kits and use different ones each time I go out. but I have to say my canteen cook kit is always going to be my go to kit. I am not going to call it my favorite because there is so many different options with each one and each has its own reasons I like it. Thanks for sharing. Robert

When using your condor put your cup and bottle in a nylon stuff sack and it will slide in and out with ease. I have and use several different kits and they each have a different purpose depending on what type of trip I'm on. I like to have options. Nice review. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy & be safe.

Great video my friend! My wife purchased the bottle stove last Christmas. I have never had the circular mesh one. I can tell from seeing it that I would feel the same as you. That being said, I love the newer model. I use it with a Tranga alcohol burner. If I know that I am going to use a fire, I bring the one that you use. I did have trouble with my water tipping over when I first started using it. When I saw Dave at the Gathering a few years ago, I was laughing with him about the time it tipped over twice and almost put my fire out. He told me to smash it into coals with my boot. ( as obvious as that was, I hadn't tried that!) lol Low IQ I guess. The first time that I did that , I bent the top of the stove in. Rob gave me a new one, but I liked the heavier stove that comes with the Nalgene canteen system. It is much thicker. BYW I WILL BE SEEING YOU GUYS THIS WEEKEND. CANT WAIT. GOD bless. John

I love the MSR Seagull pots also. I have the 775 ml which nests perfectly around those new inexpensive Chinese gassifier stoves. That pot will also slide into an old Crown Royal bag with draw strings to make a perfect cook set package. Thanks for the video.

I have a cheap copy of the maxpedition/condor bottle holder, it is a great piece of kit, i use a small drysack to put my cook kit inside it with, it all slides out really easy using that... Keep the videos coming, all the best!

Good review. I have a preference for the Swedish cook set. Mainly because the lid is the cup/skillet/dish etc. It holds everything needed to get a fire started and also holds a water container and water treatment tablets,spork etc etc :). My preference may just be because I grew up using one and I'm so used to that system that I don't need to change it.

Great cook systems bro, and agree with all you have said. I clean my pots that they are not messy or sticky. I dont mind them being black, as you said they absorb the heat better if black. Great vid and alot of info to share. thanks.

I have the canteen kit and my pardner has the cup kit. We both love our kits for our own reasons. You are right, I fell in love with the bag on the canteen kit. I carry it packed all the time. One of the handiest things I have gotten in awhile. Thanks for another great video

Hey Justin, I have both sets, the smaller kit, they really suggested to me was for alcohol burners, or trangia burners. I really like the bottle and cup but if you put the cup over the bottle I found it's easier to get it out... still rips the bag tho getting it out but it's easier. I found that an Emberlit stove in the larger pack with the bottle and cup from the small set leaves me enough room for tea,coffee and soup pack and my Zebra Pot 14mil works for cooking my meal at the end of the day and is in my pack with my food(spices in the pot). i like both cook sets too. i'm also a huge fan of the MSR stowaway pots, too. i use the following MSR stowaway pots: 1.1L, 775ml & the 475ml. i wanted to offer this about the 475ml pot... it's capacity is just under 2 measuring cups. i use the 475ml pot as a coffee kit. i prefer real coffee and don't care for instant coffee. i'm a bit of a coffee head and i want REAL coffee on the trail no matter what. in the 475ml pot i store a 4 cup plastic coffee maker basket, coffee filters, coffee, creamer & sweet n' low. boil your water in the 475ml pot, pour the water into the 4 cup plastic coffee maker basket, place the plastic basket over your large cup and you have REAL drip coffee on the trail. easy to clean... just burn the coffee filter in the fire and wipe-out the basket. another MSR stowaway pot tip: the 475ml pot will store inside of the 1.1L MSR pot if you choose. however, the 775ml MSR pot will not fit in the 1.1L pot (will not fit). the 475ml pot will not store in the 775ml pot (won't fit). if you are considering the MSR stowaway pots i highly personally recommend them. i have used them extensively for years and i would say no matter what type of cooking you are going to do that these pots are excellent...very tough, very durable, very packable. they stand up to use on a fire and also heat very very well with an alcohol stove. very high quality cookware IMO. if i were someone wanting to buy just one MSR stowaway pot i personally would select the 1.1L (not to big, not too small - lots of things already in your pack can be placed inside of the pot making the pot really take up no extra space at all.. just my opinion for what it's worth). everything depends on you only.

I agree 100% on the steel grill, and if you combine the two, attach the condor bottle pouch to the larger cook set bag, now you're good to go, eliminate anything that causes you grief and go with things that work.

I agree with you 100% .I love the MSR pots. I have the smaller one now and plan to get the larger one like you have so that my smaller one will nest inside it.. I don't have a need for stainless water containers because I will have two awesome containers to boil water in anyways, so I opt for a standard widemouth Nalgene bottle for my water storage and a bladder in my pack as well..

I had all the same problems with the bottle set. Pitched the stove filed the cup handle brackets and bought the aftermarket lid. The next generation set has addressed all of these problems. New stove, new cup, lid included. If I had to choose between the two for camping I would choose the canteen kit hands down. That said I use the bottle all day every day. Metal bottles are "in" right now so you don't get the funny looks that you would carrying a canteen. That makes it a good value for me. Also if I make an unplanned hike the bottle is already gonna be with me. What you have with you is always better than what is sitting at home.

Concerning nesting: The Nalgene stainless steel Backpacker model DOES nest inside the tapered contours of the Stanley Pot (just in case you wanted to pair those two items).

It looks to be too late for your Condor H20 pouch, but I resolved the problem of the cup being too tight and not being able to get it out without trouble. As a matter of fact, I use the GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless Bottle Cup/Pot with a 40 oz Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth Bottle. The GSI cup is just a touch wider the Pathfinder cup and even harder to remove. So I put my cup and bottle inside an old tubesock. They slid right in and all you have to do is grab the top of the sock and tug and they come out with no problem at all. Also the Kleen Kanteen is a little loose nesting inside the GSI cup so I cut off the very bottom of another tube sock and put it on the bottom of the bottle and now it fits snug. The sock itself will also come in handy on a hot day by getting it wet before you put the water bottle in it and hang it under the shade of a tree with a breeze on it. It will keep the water 20 degrees cooler then the outside temp. I don't really worry about a lid because I use a emberlit stove that burns wood. Also that setup is my emergency backup/day hike cooking instraments. My regular cooking instraments are a 14 CM Zebra Billy can and a GSI Outdoors Pinnacle 8-Inch Frypan. I'm big and eat alot of food at one sitting.

Happy Thanksgiving. As always good advice. Choose what works for you depending on the circumstances at the time. Rare that a "once size fits all" actually does that. May come closer to fitting the average, but not much that isn't "average". Like the looks of pots and other gear that have seen usage. Lets us know that it has stood the test of time. Plus, well seasoned cookware always seems to perform a little bit better. Remove soot? Yes. Remove the stains? No need to scrub (abrade) off natural seasoning that enhances performance. (BTW, one of my hobbies is restoring old cast iron & carbon steel cookware.)

Very nice and compact cook sets, much in similarity to my own in terms of concept and useage philosophy. Managed to get one of those Stanley Adventure Cook sets here in the UK too, they are rarer than hens teeth over here, and as you rightly pointed out the lid is a perfect fit for the Tatonks folding handle mug! not sure if anyone else has already suggested it, or if you've already tried it but, when it comes to your bottle kit, I find it easier to nest the cup ON TOP of the bottle, not BELOW it. easy in, easy out... shouldn't tear anything, although I don't know the situation with those handles, if the sharp bit is on both sides. hope this helps. happy holidays.

Nalgene makes a 32oz stainless steel water bottle with a slightly tapered bottom that nests inside the Stanley Adventure Cook Kit cup. Both the Stanley cup and Nalgene bottle will then nest into the space saver cup. Makes a great piece of kit.

Good stuff as always Justin. Its pretty hard to beat the canteen set IMO, but I got the bottle kit for my wife for our day hikes. Like you I was disappointed the cup had to be modified to not rip the pouch it comes in.

The Stanley adventure bottle will nest in the Stanley cook kit, but the new ones have plastic bodies. The original had a stainless steel body.

Great video. And the answer is{:mix and match for what works best for you. The used look is most reassuring as it shows that you have used the kit. The Alcos nesting two pot and lids set is a reasonable option along a used plastic drink bottle for young folk / get home bag / cache set. Dave's new round water bottle stove is like the cup, punched holes in the bottom and nests on top of the canteen. Do your own research because good quality cup / stove / water bottle / cook set will last a lifetime. [My 14 year old son chose a Trangia cook set, I could not fault his research so I paid for it. He still has it 20 years later.] For me, I have cooked more than 2000 meals, made far too cups of coffee and warmed water for field shave n sponge bath in a GI canteen cup. SS items are better quality than aluminum and genuine GI items are far better than Chinese knock-off copies. This video shows high end quality options that over time prove to be the cheapest per time used. Note the very good point of keeping the next meal packed in with the water bottle / cook kit: quick, easy meal, less mess and no main pack opening. Thank you for your video

I just saw a KZfaq video from Jamie Canterbury advertising a Gen 2 Bottle Cook Kit that has an upgraded bag that solves the problem of the tight fit of the Condor bag. Also, it has no liner to get caught and ripped. It looks much better and if I had it, I'd be glad to use it. I do think that I agree with you, though. I like the canteen kit bag better as well. The bag itself is more multipurpose, like a mini haversack. Thanks for the great video!

I took that cheap ring and wired it tight to the side of my Kleen Canteen and attached a wire bail to the ring. It works better as a bottle holder than a stand for fire.

good video - some really good points on the pros and cons of the various pieces of kit. One factor is cost and although the pathfinder sets are great they are expensive and I think you can do just as well with a little more thought and less cash.

I have a 27 oz klean kanteen that nest in the Stanley, and Stanley in the cup. Works great, 32 is now hard to find and 40 is too big.

Im in the market for a nice all around cook kit that can nest well, fry, cook ramen noodles which takes a good 4.5 cup pot (i know im probably gonna get alot of mess for putting ramen noodles in this comment but i always have ramen in the bush with me its cheap, quick and easy) and that msr pot seems like a good deal for me with the shallower pot so you can fry on the bottom or the lid. This video actualy helped me alot mr. Grier, ive been gettin real tired of hoarding cook gear

As alway great video. I would love to have that MOLLE bag for my Pathfinder Bottle set and I hope to get one in the coming months. And I do believe the Pathfinder Canteen set is about $30 more than the bottle set. Anyways yeah, MSR Seagull is the way to go and the Stanley cookset is a Very budget friendly option with the $5 SS nesting cup.

I have the generation 3 trail pro cook set and it comes with a fantastic alcohol stove and a bottle stove I don't recognize and don't have. I have a bottle stove that works fantasticly. I have a alcohol stove that stays burning for more than an hour with less than 8 ounces of 91 percent alcohol in it.

Seen one video where the person took his new stainless cook kit and sprayed the outside with stove black before using them. He then took them out, built a fire and put the cook kit in the campfire for a while. According to him the stove black distributes the heat better than leaving it as is. What's your opinion between your method of leaving the fire stain on the metal vs using stove black?

Good video! What size MSR is that? I was putting together a good bottle set, when I came across the Pathfinder kit. It has everything I had found separately all in one. All high quality, good designed stuff...and it's cheaper than buying it all individually. I do like the MSR pan you have there, a buddy had one at camp. Loaded with spices,taters, and veggies, just added water and meat to make up a stew...so yummy.

The bottle WILL nest if you do the handle mod on the Stanley, keep the handle and lid down the side or in the front pouch?

It's the cup. I have a different brand of cup that doesn't catch on the Condor pouch.

you are a mind reader!! i have had the same questions rolling around in my head, canteen or bottle set. They talk about the Pathfinder bottle set being one quart to make it easy for chemical treatment of water. i also heard that the level to the canteen seam is one quart but don't know if that is true. I have seen the MSR kit at the REI store and see it comes in different sizes. Do you recommend a particular size? What is yours ? I guess if you really want to go cheap you could use the grill from an old toaster oven and a used fruit juice can. just put a bail on it. Thanks for taking be along when you unpacked the canteen cup by your river.

the thing that bugs me about this pouch the canteen pouch and i have had mine way before the pathfinder store picked it up, is when you walk with it and you obviusly have it around your shoulders, is the thing always hits your hip and falls down... i like to walk with it and i would prefer it to just be located at my back not swinging around at my hip crashing into branches and such.... i hate the stove for the canteen cooker junk i use esbit or collagen fire tabs and when you put them on the ground it sucks all the heat out of them and puts them out, i mean some times when you need a hot drink or food who wants to go looking for rocks and things leaving winter walks out of the question...

went to my local surplus store purchased lids for both styles canteen and cup $2.99 each minus shipping and handling

I agree with you It drove me to go over to LA Police Gear to buy their stainless steel quart bottle set up with their large space saver cup and lid .....and I made a potholder/stove out of an old dintyy moore can and I typically use a soda pop can burner with alcohol and I got a generic nylon water bottle holder off Amazon and this works just about perfectly I also use that generic stamped aluminum stand you can get off of Amazon I forget the name of it but it comes with a generic trangia type burner It fits perfectly inside the den team or can as a Windbreak or you can use the large tuna fish can chicken breast can which is the same diameter just a little shorter in height

about the SS. Stanley cook cup with the locking handle: i've had that cup a long time and i also have the wal-mart ozark trail 18oz. SS. nesting cup, too. i bought them at the same time at WM and used them both a lot before tiring of them both. this is all just my opinion only..... the stanley cook cup is a disappointment in the long run after using it a lot. if you take a real good look at it you will see a seam in the stainless steel on the inside right in-line where the 2 rivets go that hold on the handle latch. if you take another real good look at it inside you'll see another seam that goes all the way around it at the bottom. look at the rolled lip at top... you'll see where the 2 pieces of the sides butt together and are lip rolled. not counting the rivets or the handle latch i think the main body of this cup 2 seperate pieces welded together.... the bottom looks like 1 piece that's welded all the way around and then the sides are welded all the way up and around. i think they brush finish the outside of the cup to hide the welded seams? i feel pretty sure this is all correct? you can tell me what you think if you are interested? if this cup is welded together at these seams then the quality of this cup is way lesssened IMO? if the cup body were 1 pc pressed into shape with a rolled lip then i might be more impressed? over time and lots of use my cup is separating at the seams. i just don't wanna be a woman coming on here and everybody thinking i know everything because i sure don't. however, i'm saying my cup is coming apart at the seams. i feel sure it's seamed and welded at those seams. tell me what you think if you have the cup, please????

I get an impression many of the GI canteen cup lids on Ebay only fit the canteen cup made by the same company, you seem lucky to have found one that fit.

I have found that if I put the kit in a nylon stuff sack it slides in and out of the pouch very easy.

I found that after boiling water in my Pathfinder bottle (the round one), and allowing the water to cool down enough to handle the bottle without gloves, that the lid would then leak and was no longer water tight. The lid itself was never heated. I am going to stick with Klean Kanteen which has a much sturdier lid design. To me having the capability to sterilize your water necessitates having a stainless steel bottle of some variety in your kit.

For the cup go to a sherwin williams or home depot and get a quart paint can lid.
