Just wanted to share my space with people. Nothing too fancy in my studio gear-wise, but it's an excellent space to create in, and it's always a work in progress!

Damn so jealous of that Juno 6 in the background lol, I just have a virus polar and desk version with computer card and of course the mk3 and a couple Roland 808s and 303 etc but seeing you’re setup makes me think to redo my setup and go on a spending spree. Over all nice vintage stuff cause they have a sound regardless of the vst’s and digital compressors analog is still the way to go.

Thanks Jef. Great tour. Germany and or Cubase servers sure seemed antiquated yesterday and today. Because of Nate's IT consulting, we have a fast internet service, yet last couple days, to download C.B. 10 Full (21.3~ gigs), it took 7hrs on one machine and 17(!!). hrs for my dedicated "music" machine. Oh well. At least now I have a back up set up, via dongle transfer. Impressive studio and ancillaries. Great question! Should’ve mentioned that... I have a bunch around my desk, behind and under my desk. Trying to make a dead zone around the speakers etc. then I have them wider spaced to the back of the room. I have thicker ones stacked in the corners to act a little like bass traps (corners are bad for bass buildup). Then I have foam on the ceiling to reduce flutter between the floor and the ceiling. Not perfect, but gets better all the time!

Phillip Smith just to add to jefs pretty much awesome setup and explanation, just think music as waves that bounces of objects like walls, windows corners and roof and behind it . So if you imagine your room try and visualise the waves and where they might bounce off from that’s how I set my setup. Corners. Behind the desk, each speaker sits on a foam square. It takes a long time to get it just right I am still improving mine and it’s still not finished. The problem is each room is different the size etc just keep at it, you’ll get there 👌

Do you have any opinion on S49 vs S61 given I already have a 88 key hammer action keybed as well? I am concerned about desk space but not over the utility of a larger synth action keyed. Nice studio Jef. Started using Maschine on the S61 recently as well for more of an idea playground (too limited to "finish" songs most of the time). I look over the fence to the Ableton SessionArrangement setup with envy.

Out of curiosity, what are the approximate dimensions of your room (LxWxH)? We're currently looking at homes with a detached garage so I can build out a more spacious home studio and I'm hoping for ~10' ceilings and 400-500 square feet. Your room looked perfectly comfortable, even with a decent amount of furniture.

It is amazing, your interests and expertise. I would like to ask about Computers and Cubase. What makes a powerful DAW computer system Is it the CPU cores Is the RAM, 16, 32, 64 Do you have any suggestions in the current available systems, in terms of better CPU's and what would be ideal RAM
@jefgibbons
@jefgibbons 5 жыл бұрын
+dowtube1 thanks for the comment! I’ve been using 32gb ram for a long time now, and I don’t see that being the weak link on my old 2013 Mac Pro. I see cpu as the weakest part, so I’d say at least 32 gb ram and then the best cpu you can afford.
@hassmiloud4686
@hassmiloud4686 5 жыл бұрын
dowtube1 number 1 good clock speed ram like ddr 4 3200 and above, the amount of ram can vary I have 128 gig. I went so high is I have lots of synths and vst’s open at a single time and that have lots of voices the more you use the more ram it allocates it. CPU should be your 2nd I have a i9 9940 which to be honest is abit overkill, a i7 8700 is more than enough. 3rd is a optional but not a must is getting a quality graphics card I have dual 1080ti 11gig each bridged sli, if you tinker around with the gpu memory it can be allocated to daws and other programs so you can use them other then just playing games, seeing gpu’s sit in a high lvl bus lanes in your computer the bandwidth back and forth is just ridiculously fast. Saying that a high end setup can cost a lot of $ but if you do it in stages like getting a high end motherboard and a i7 with 32 gigs of ram even under 3200 clock speed get a average gpu then save up and just buy little things over time, add more ram etc etc then the costing isn’t had much upfront. Hope this helps.
@dowtube1
@dowtube1 5 жыл бұрын
@@hassmiloud4686 thank you for your suggestions. The machine you point out would easily reach $3k { in 2019 prices}. But I see your point in RAM and CPU. I am wondering, why one would need a heavy duty Graphics, when all one is running is CUBASE, where lightening fast refreshes may not be needed.
@hassmiloud4686
@hassmiloud4686 5 жыл бұрын
dowtube1 cubase/neundo won’t use all that power but think about all the vst’s and line ins aux/ midi devices. Plus all the analog gear, input a sound card / umount audio interface can handle so much pass through without buying multiples which is stupid money. We’re talking proper audio grade hardware plus most studios I worked at had server racks full of server grade computer with duel or even quad CPU’s per mother board. So for a person who makes music at home with a limited budget, you have to get creative with assets you can buy and afford hence gpu is the perfectly way of using something meant for gaming and using the same hardware and tech for something else like carrying the load with its gpu which are basically ram Just abit more complex but serves the same purpose or get some analog gear like compressors etc. I am not saying it’s the perfect setup or it’s for everybody.. it depends on the user and what he has. For me I got loads of hardware and for example have 10 vsts running at one go like mashine 2 , Kontact, avenger, nexus 2 , sylenth1, dune 2 or even serum etc going in one project and then 30mins later delete half those vsts cause one doesn’t have the right sound. Yes I understand my flow of productivity might not be like yours or others but I rather just it not lagging than changing my style of writing I been doing for over 25 years well 17ish with the new daw integration. And I understand most starting out or a up and coming engineers/ producers won’t have the money for all those plug ins and hardware like i have and others. But keep watching jef’s vids and you will learn a lot, he even thought me a thing or two a person never stops learning. I think I rambled I enough 😀

You didn't tell us what Audio Interface you use. Was it the Focusrite Clarett Thunderbolt? I can't seem to find that one anywhere, because I don't think Focusrite sells that specific one anymore. How do you like it?
@jefgibbons
@jefgibbons 5 жыл бұрын
+Bee Gee you’re right! Glossed over that... kind of important. It is the clarett... and it’s not bad. I don’t like the preamps on it, they have an “air” feature that seems like it’s just a boost in the high frequencies, nothing magical about it. The isa preamps are much better. I do like the software control, the routing, and the hardware knobs. I also like the meters... and it wasn’t expensive. Next time I’d get a better sounding preamp with less pres!

What are your thoughts on that whole Roxul / Rockwool / "glasfibres are dangerous to health debate" that's been going on? Some people say the fibres end up in the air (and airways) due to bass frequencies and whatnot... ? Personally, I'm undecided on the matter. Roxul has some good properties, like being 100% flame retardent, which can't be said for foam products. And when they are, they've been sprayed with chemicals that may be hazardous to health too.

I only make loops and having a hard tome understanding how to establish and create a actual song. I think im only making loops. I guess i just have to many questions to ask, like how do u know what where the kick and snare go on the bars and what how to create a intro hook verse chorus, verse and outro. I would really appreciate if someone could help me in any way possible
