Hammock Gear Cuben Fiber Tarp with ridge pole mod, door management, and Dutchware bling. These mods are compatible with any tarp with similair specs. You don't have to spend money on DCF to achieve the same features. For me DCF is worth it because of how much backpacking I do per year and how much I use the tarp. For someone that goes on only 1-2 trips a year of course I do not recommend spending the money on expensive gear.

Jason, Quick note to let you know that after I viewed this video 3 months ago and I was finally able to get out in the woods and use my new Hammock Gear Cuben Fiber Tarp. I utilized all of your suggested tie-outs except the trekking poles over the top of the tarp since we were expecting rain during the night. As the thunder storm started to blow, I was able to quickly shut the flaps without getting wet. Thanks for your tips and all your videos!

You could try attaching the two pullouts together so you would only need one pole in the middle to raise the sides. On each side attach the two pullouts so the line meets in the middle, then use the pole in the same manor. this way you have an extra pole to use for what you may need.

Didnt even finish the video before I went and got the Dutchware ridgeline. I camp off my motorcycle, and switched to a hammock last year. I always hated the tarp set up, having to recenter by untying and retying... This makes so much more sense... Headed out again next weekend, so keeping my fingers crossed the ridgeline gets here in time. And yes, I did finish the video after buying the ridgeline.

Great idea about the hiking pole mods! Definitely giving that a try. I switched to the mitten hooks for the doors as well after "borrowing" your original idea with the clips and had the same frustrations that drove you to switch. One mod I did though was remove the actual clip part of the mitten hook basically just making them into a hook. So much easier to move on and off without having to deal with the clips and there is no way hey will come off due to the tension in the shock cord

Do it, I tested it out last week on the Virginia triple crown (your inspiration). Absolutely no drawbacks with not having the clips. It was great when it started thunder storming unexpectedly overnight and I had to deploy the doors real quick in that groggy 2am state, lol

WOW! Thank you so much! I have been using a Jacks R Better 11x 10 tarp for over five years. I love the tarp, love the coverage, but I have never been able to figure out the doors. I have always staked them out and could never get them to close just right. I have lost track of how many videos I have seen but no one has broken down a tarp set up the way you have. I am going to try your idea the first chance I get. The pole spacer idea is brilliant. Again, many thanks.

Another of good content in the whole beginner tarp series. I have the Duo asymmetrical hammock with surround bug net. I also bought a 10x12 tarp as extra protection against horizontal rain like we get in Florida. I think it is just nylon, which is pretty heavy, but strong. The door internal rig to outside stake is a super idea. I can always make tall stakes for flapping problem since I don't have walking sticks yet.

Probably silnylon or silpoly. Even though it's a little heavier it packs down much much smaller than cuben/DCF

I am saving for a Warbonnet Super Fly tarp. I have seen that mod with the poles before, but you showed in detail how they were attached. My biggest problem so far is I don't use trecking poles, I use a walking staff. Stick would get pissed if i dumped him for some trecking poles and left him at home. I see what you can use trecking poles for like setting up porch mode or using them to set up a ground tarp config. More work in the back yard learning how to do this. Feels like the wilderness with four legged animals roaming till I cut the grass. I set my Blackbird XLC with a blue hardware store tarp in the back yard and Coal who is a Great Dane Lab mix wanted me to move over so he could get in :-) Learning a lot from your videos, thanks for everything. Awesome video Jason. I've got a similar setup with HG CF Tarp and use Tarpfly/dutch hook for continuous Ridgeline. Stole the idea from Derek of ultimate hang. Andrew Skurka also has a great video on guy line setup without hardware. Allows for natural anchor points which has come in handy on several occasions.

I love posts like this. Good job and thank you! I think I'm going to use a lot of your ideas, but I'm going to splice everything to avoid the knots. =) When I was a Scoutmaster I did everything with knots (more to show the boys how knowing knots is useful), but now I'm all about the Dutch bling and how quick and simple it is. Also, I like a little more "V" in my tarp suspension so that I can have it straddle my hammock suspension and get lower to the ground (just requires a wasp on both sides).

Thanks for sharing your setup. I'm using a 12' HG CF tarp and I have a similar setup. I've been using 4 extra stakes and guyline for the doors but I like what you did with the shock cord and mitten hooks. Looking forward to your next adventure out on the trail!

I have always just used knots yet find when my hands are cold, I would like some hooks to make things faster and more streamlined. Ordering the hardware to duplicate your set up. I prefer a continuous ridgeline not only to use the trekking pole mod but to take some strain off my tarp. Thanks again Jason!

Great look at your setup. I have a tarp with doors also, and I use shockcords and mittenhooks as well, and I'm wondering if you've found a good way of deploying the doors in one side only? Sometimes the wind comes from one direction, and I'd still like to look out, or get the airflow in the other end, but if I close one side, the other side is floppy since I don't have anything to attach it to. On my corners I use lineloc 3's, which works out marvellously. I really need to get pullouts added to my tarp, cause that is a neat trick you've got there!

Yes actually, when that happens I attach the mitten hooks not in use to the loop I made on the zing it attached to the pullouts. So they are on the outside where I showed the holes used to secure the trekking pole. Hope that helps.

You can use 2 tripods of thick saplings, one for each end. Each pole need to be around 8 feet long to give enough height for the hammock and still remain stable.

I'm digging the trek pole idea. I don't use trekking poles while hiking, so would two tree branches work as well? I also dig the mitten hook idea. I have hooks as well, but without the extra clip. As mentioned below, it's much easier to unsnap with one hand and also in winter while wearing gloves. Also, for the tie outs, I've seen a few people integrate the shock cord directly to the line as a fail prove backup in case the shock cord snaps for any reason. The way it is set up now, if your shock cord snaps in the middle of the night for any reason, that corner of your tarp will be flapping around until you adjust it. I'm definitely trying out the trek pole idea, perhaps with some branches. Thanks for the idea.

Hey Frozen, Great mods and content. Have you used/considered Niteize Camjam to anchor the tarp beaks from each end of your snakeskin stuff sack to each tree? It would eliminate carrying a full length ridge line. Would you recommend the camo print for more privacy when changing or is it the same translucence as the green? Are the doors a 'should have' or a luxury? Many thanks #44

Haven't tried the camjams but I don't know how that would work to center tarp. I think the camo print is pretty nice but extra weight and costs. I'm happy with the color I have. It blurs everything out enough that you cant tell. I usually get dressed under my quilt anyway.

Really cool, Frozen, and I'm not even a hammock guy (here in Brazil the hammocks available here and the tarps are just so bad... ), but I liked the video nonetheless.. I was wondering, you think that in mountain situations you could use your tarp as your shelter and you lay in the ground with a ground sheet? I mean, not just mountain, but any situation that you wouldn't be able to hang a hammock: deserts, mountain ridges, etc. Thanks

Have you ever used just the shock cord in a continuous loop on your tie out and connected them to hooked stakes? I have found this to be a very quick set up and no need to take all the time to wind up the tie outs to your tent stakes. Can you think of any reason that using only the shock cord tie outs would be bad for your tarp?

Thanks for the great video. I just started hammock camping and love it. I have been hanging my tarp the same way with one exception. I am hanging it over the ridge line. Is that wrong? If so, please elaborate. Thanks

You can do it either way. Whatever works for you. With cuben fiber tarps (they are 2 pieces taped together at the top) i worried about the line cutting in and abrasion. But yes it doesn't matter you can do it either way.

Can't tell you specifics but I feel it could fit 2 people comfortably. Laid flat the tarp is 8'6" wide but I've never gotten the chance to have a tape measure during set up.

Love the set up and the dutchware used....similar to what I do, but haven't splurged on the cuben fiber yet.....can you give me your honest opinion about the noise of it in the wind/rain and and its see thru-ness, also, if its hot out could the sun potentially bake you in your hammock if one was to sleep late? Great video Jason!

The rain is a bit noisy compared to silnylon. See thru-ness doesn't both me, I always have my buff available to slide over my eyes if needed. I could see it being hot under the tarp in the sun, but I haven't experienced it since I always wake up early and get to camp before. Trust me though once you get a cuben tarp you will never go back to silnylon.

Excellent video! How dry does your gear stay under the tarp on the ground, or do you hang it and do you get much spray coming from under the tarp in higher windy rains?

It really depends. On rainy nights where the wind is calm everything stays completely dry with good site selection (not camping in a water run off), with high winds sometimes and rain, sometimes i'll just hang my pack over the the suspension of my hammock at the foot end. No issues either way. This video has gotten a lot more attention than i originally thought so I might discuss my hammock setup and what I do in different situations.

How are the shockcord guylines in tough conditions? My only fear about using them is realizing I made a big mistake halfway through a stormy night.

Great job very helpful. On the pole mod do you use the prusik knots on the end guy out lines for porch mode? Or do you not every setup porch mode

Porch mode I use the D rings and put my trekking pole tip in the guy line hole.

They get tied back. If I'm using porch mode it's good weather usually.

You can but it will flap a lot in heavy wind. I don't recommend it.

I'm currently choosing between the 10' or 11' Hammock Gear Tarp with doors for my ENO Sub6 hammock. I'm leaning towards 10 feet since it'll save weight and I plan to have a continuous ridgeline to adjust the coverage. Does anyone have advice whether 10 or 11 would be best? The downside of 10 is if things are too cramped.

Daniel, I ended up getting the 12' Ridgeline Tarp from Hammock Gear with doors. I wanted the extra space so I could be under it during rain to cook, etc. Testing it out on the AT this weekend!

I run my ridge line under my tarp and it gives me a place to hang clothes and gear and gives it a nice crease and it’s more stable. Would there be any issues doing so with this tarp? I’m looking into getting one for sure. I also use prusik knots for ridgline as well Thanks

I can't speak from experience. But I DCF is taped in the middle so it might cause abrasion over time. I would honestly leave it above the tarp. Maybe someone else can weigh in.

Hey there Jason, might you be able to comment on how long your ridgeline is? Mine is pretty long and am thinking i could cut it down in size and not have so much extraneous cordage. Would love to get some idea of what you've found to be adequate for your outdoor adventures. Thanks!

I think mine is 20-25 foot. But it's zing it so not a big weight reduction. Sometimes I extend the Ridgeline past the tree I'm using and I have a great place to hang stuff to dry.
