Here’s what the song reminds me of - in the mid 80s when I was a teenager, I was out riding around listening to music with an equally music-obsessed friend. We stopped in a rural area at a store and he went inside for a snack. I stayed in the car. He came outside a few minutes later, and he burst out laughing as soon as we made eye contact. He was dying laughing. I immediately started laughing, not yet knowing what was funny. He got in and took his coke, etc. out of the bag, then pulled out a new Steppenwolf cassette still in the wrapper. In that time period, where we lived, you usually had to travel an hour in any direction to find cassettes - and gas stations simply didn’t sell them. So, for him to have bought a cassette of any kind in there was just bizarre! And the fact that it was a group that had songs from the time we were born, and not current music, made it even weirder! It was ancient history to our teenage minds. It was $2.99. I asked him if there was another one in there, and he said yeah. I went in and bought one and I also started laughing when I got outside. I bet the old store owner looked at his wife and was like, “see? I told you that investing in these Steppenwolf cassettes was a good idea! Two teenagers in 2 minutes! We’ll be rich!” Lol. My buddy tragically died a couple years later, and this song always brings back that funny memory of him.

We didn’t consider it ancient history. Sure the big band stuff was outdated but we listened to all music from start of rock/pop era in 50s up to the 80s. Current music wasn’t as accessible then. We just had the radio and old records that we got cheap which were always older. Sure, everyone had songs they didn’t like but it was never because of how old the songs were. Good music was good music to us. We were more open minded than teens nowadays to older music. I remember top 40 stations in the 80s would mix in 50s, 60s, and 70s music with the current stuff.

My high school had a concert with The Coasters as a reward for school fund raising but the coaster thought it was beneath them to play a high school and canceled. They got Steppenwolf as the replacement band just before their first album came out. They blew the doors off the place! 😀

Iconic song from a huge band back in the day. Born to Be Wild should be next, then Pusher and many others from Steppenwolf.

The lead singer and co-founder John Kay was born Joachim Fritz Krauledat on April 12, 1944, a German. In 2022 he received a monument in Arnstadt/Thuringia (former GDR) where he was also present. In 1945 his mother fled with him to this city from the Russian soldiers. They lived there until 1948. The city is also known for Johann Sebastian Bach, as he took up his first position as organist there. I LOVE THIS SONG.👍

Steppenwolf is soo good, loved to jam to them in the 80s as a little kid before finding them again later as an adult in Japanese Karaoke. Their songs are so much fun in Karaoke when everyone is wasted and no one else can really understand English 😂 ... and not that much singing 😂

There was a ride at the Santa Monica Pier called the Magic Carpet Ride. They had a promo painted on the side of a brick building in Santa Monica which advertised the ride, the group saw the ad and that gave them the idea for the song.

My mom went to buy my 14 year old bother an 8-Track and the counter girl recommended the new release Easy Rider. Said he would love it. My brother plugged it in and the first song was Steppenwolf's The Pusher. The first line was 'God Damm, God Damm the pusher man. My mom freaked and continued to freak out with each song. She was very anti drugs, unlike my brother even at 14. My brother loved that album. He later became friends with their keyboardist; Goldy Johns
