Excellent idea, I was building a free floating TV cabinet and cut the dados with a router bit for 3/4”plywood. Made for a very tight fit. Grabbed an 80 grit 3m cubitron diisk wrapped over a 1/2” scrap of wood and 3 passes on each side of the dado and now perfect for glue. Thank you for that great idea!

I have a side rabbet plane , but it is tough to use on plywood. May build one of these. I almost always pre-sand all inside surfaces to get all the way into corners and for ease of sanding. This also helps when plows or dadoes are tight.

Clever, indeed. Nicely done. I strolled over to the website to peruse all of your available shop plans. I'll likely return soon as I'm beginning a renovation of my own shop, such as it is. I'm curious whether you've ever seen or considered the practicality of an X-Y positioning/holding table for the typical bench-top mortiser? Inquiring minds, and all that.

I'll stick with my bumblery Dremel router attachment, always faster than sanding and if I set it properly it never takes too much away lol. The other option is just find a flat piece of stock and get those square sanding pads for palm sanders, spray or tape them to the board and so long as you sand in a straight line it will do the job as well. Thanks for sharing James, this would probably be much easier than the way I do it lol.

If i may ask what type of plane was the one used at the begining, i have one very similar made by sargent but with 2 blades. Also great way to solve a problem if you dont have the right tools.

I'm sad, Stompy; expected you to solve problem of dado being too wide. I happen to have bought a few Lee Valley mini planes, including a side plane. It worked well enough that I don't need this tool. However, I do appreciate it being free; thanks! Now... what about my dado?

I love it. I'm gonna make one. I do have a suggestion for a slight improvement, though. Round over the rear edges on the vertical block and you won't have to worry so much about scraping your knuckles on the sharp edges. Do that before you screw it to the base. Easy peasy with a round-over router bit or a little sanding.

To call any jigsaw ideal for cutting straight lines, is ... well it doesn’t sound right in my ears.
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't say it was ideal for cutting straight lines. I said it was ideal for THAT job, which was cutting out a recess where you couldn't enter from an edge, as you would with a band saw.
