There is nothing like seeing the sun as it rises, before it shines in full. Such was my impression of the very impressive Amyah when she stopped by my Zulu Language & Culture class while she was on her Howard campus visit. Erudite and nonchalant, she is ready for the world. Thanks Maze family for giving Amyah support by bringing the whole Fam for the visit! Super special thanks to Akeeba for bringing my abashana along! What a day! I hope I and all the people Amyah met made a good case for choosing HU.

Upon visiting my daughter one day at school she realized and said she made the biggest mistake by not attending Spelman. There’s nothing like the sisterhood. I myself have lifelong friends/sistahs because of my attending Spelman. What most don’t know is that you can also take classes at Morehouse (all male college) across the street as well as Clark. Spelman has been the #1 HBCU for years and there’s a reason why.

Some of my ancestors were professors at Howard and I last walked the campus about a year ago. At that time, there were protests about tuition costs. The campus' green spaces were also filled with tents protesting student housing conditions. I don't think Howard's student and alumni support can be matched, but they have to be weighed against the college's ongoing issues. Best of luck in your college search.

I love the conversation with granddad. Advising to not go too far away from the younger siblings. They will not love you as much because something will be lost with too much distance. I myself was 21yrs. old when the last child was born in my family. I had a family already. And nerver really bonded with her.

All my family members are very successful and have a different mindset graduating from a HBCU. I received a BSPH degree the end of 2021, but I wish I graduated from a HBCU. I agree with what the students said. They were right about you having networking opportunities and meeting so many people who you will bond with. The community aspect of feeling naturally welcomed. Unfortunately you don't feel that at pwi colleges. I am thankful to be able to have attended college, but I will always encourage the younger POC/students to consider an HBCU.

Hopefully Howard University took care of their mold problem in the dorms rooms that caused some health issues for a few of the female students back in 2021. I pray that whatever college she goes to would also take care of the needs of the students, especially when their parents are paying for tuition, room and board.

I forgot about the students walkout protests due to housing issues at Howard after students became ill due to mold in some of the dorms. My niece attended 2014-2018 but moved off campus her junior year but the two years she lived in the newer dorm she had no problem. I know HU sold many of its properties to big developers so Im not sure about the housing situation but those parents pay a hefty fee for their children to attend HU. So surely 2 years later housing has improved.

@@briarrah You are correct. Unlike prestigious Ivy League universities with Alumni supporting their Alma Maters generously in financial support, the same cant be said for many HBCUs.

@@briarrah What's sad is that this is still going on. Hopefully it won't take someone dying to get their attention. It would be cheaper to just take care of this issue rather than paying for several lawsuits, and hospital bills in the end. I'll add this to my prayer list, hopefully others follow suit and do the same. Stay safe and healthy Briarrah Rountree.

Proud HBCU Graduate Here 🎉 It’s Great Choice for any student experience. I understand what your grandfather was saying… when I had my youngest son, my oldest son was going to college as a freshman, and when he came home for a visit after a few months, my baby did not know who he was. But trust and believe when I tell you, they are extremely close to this day even with a 17 1/2 yr, difference in age. So don’t worry as long as you are making connections every time you come home they’ll remember you and look forward every time you come home.
