Hi Peter Interesting to hear of your problems with the Bachmann motors. Fortunately, I have not experienced the same problems. I have an extensive collection, serious collector, with over 100 Bachmann diesels, 29 x Class 37s and 34 x Class 66s. Only one 66, gave me problems and was a wheel issue, which is still to be fixed. Keep up the good work as I enjoy your informative videos.

Cheers for sharing that, I've just spent the best part of of 3 days trying to work out what is wrong on my sound fitted class 37, was ready to bounce it off the wall! Will give that a go, flushed the motor out with cleaner but still no good, heard that sending it off to bachmann not great, and they won't look at non warranty claims at the moment , I suppose I should be glad mine lasted that long😁, this hobby ain't cheap we kind of deserve better, thanks

We could discuss this in the stream on Wednesday while watching my trains go round hopefully with out teleporting all around the track as last Wed. I must say you looked very well so just keep safe and play trains. Cheers Robert.

Hello Peter im a new subscriber thanks to Allan at Dragon Junction for pointing me over to your video,i mainly run Hornby Railroad as its mostly in my price range.I would be devastated if those beautiful expensive engines were playing up like that from brand new! Bloody Bachmann need to sort their act out regarding these motors, all that money and they are crap? I wouldnt have it myself.

Hi mate, sorry for your news, did you set about replacing the motors? Why I made the video is because I thought no one spoke of there problems with DCC and when I had so many motors go on me because I did not see anyone else post I thought it was me. Now others have come forward with woes. TBH I think DCC control of the motors work them harder than under DC and with motors being made in there 000s some break down. Still would like to strip down my broken motors that I still have but I need a puller to remove the weights. Hope it goes well with the new controller All the best Peter

Great video with plenty of information on different topics , I have one Bachman 66 from DC Kits with there sound and no problem with it . The Elite has the same issues only I am just careful when programming to make surer the CV hasn't changed before pressing resett , Hornby fitted a new rotary switch which did improve it's performance . Would like to change the Elite but the price of some controllers is too expensive and I am more tempted to purchase another loco . ..........Peter

Hey Peter, yes I still use the elite to reset chips and change CVs and addresses, it's easy to do it on my work top, also to power locos as I clean wheels. It's as you say just make sure it's the right number before you press the big button, just a little annoying. Just to say I have other Bachmanns 37, 66 and class 70 that have had no problems with, just hope thats the end to it, but at least I know what to do to fix them. All the best Peter

Hi Peter, having your layout and expensive electronics such as controllers in your shed will play havoc with motors and sensetive electronics. That's one possible reason for your misfortune with the problems you've encountered and would seriously consider insulating your shed to the hilt. Have a look at some of Jerry Allen's videos as he had very similar problems but he put it down to the humidity with living in Uganda! I have however had problems with Bachmann motors in my class 150's then I too bought 2 'new' ones from Bachmann only for them not to work also!!! Great video's and I enjoy watching them. Keep 'em coming!

Hi Lawrence, when it gets to the winter time, I don't run my trains I take the locos indoors. However the sheds not the biggest thats why a small layout and I have a very good heater that warms it up quite nicely. The first time I had troubles was in the summer time so not damp or freezing and some of my older engines have ran in both the hot and cold with no trouble, but I do keep an eye on the weather. I am subbed to Jerry's channel and yes he's had his share of bad luck in the past, a long wait now as he moved house. Cheers Peter

Thanks for the info Merv, will keep it safe, as an update for yourself things have been pretty good. You know I had a thought that because I film my locos a lot as I don't have a large layout, the loco motors get put through a lot with all the pull away from stop and ultra slow running. Maybe that stresses the motors a great deal? Those CV settings are for the fine motor control and the back EMF Will look for a Rapido trains video. Do you have a link? Thanks Peter

I have not had much joy sending things 'back to Bachmann'. I had a Switch Pilot which went wrong and I sent it back to Bachmann and charged me the standard service fee, and that in turn went wrong. So I gave up on DCC control of points and went back to switches! I have a Bachmann Dynamis which strangely hasn't gone wrong. However, I acquired a second unit, the Dynamis Ultima and found it made an annoying high-pitched while. I contemplating sending it 'back to Bachmann', but when I communicated with Bachmann service they told me the Dynamis contains no serviceable parts. So basically if it goes wrong, you've had it! The suppression capacitors should not be removed from locos on DCC as this can cause interference on Wi-Fi. You can, however, fit better quality suppression capacitors. Some DCC fitted locos have built-in suppression capacitors. Great layout. Good idea to use the sectional track. Please feature another running session soon. Thanks for uploading.

Re button 2. I have just purchased the wifi module for gaugemaster from hattons. You can then use a free app on your phone called engine driver from jmri and this allows you to have the function buttons latched or unlatched on the phone app and name them individually per loco. This wont alter the prodigy handset but once you have used the app for driving you wont need the handset other than for programming locos. There are video reviews under the mrc prodigy American brand, which is the same as the gaugemaster. Hope this helps

Hello Peter have just watched this video after watching Alan's with his 66 problem. I also use Gaugemaster prodigy advance and on the odd occasion have had a bit of erratic running and run away trains. I turn off the system completely that's track and mains. Switch back on and all runs ok, it's like given it a reset have you tried this. I have 33 class 37's and 13 class 66 never have I had to replace a motor. give it a try if it happens again. Next the Hatton 66 the Gaugemaster f2 can be set with a cv change so it stays on which is cv16 but if your not into cv changing make sure first. There must be loads of guys out there with Hatton's 66 using Gaugemaster. You could try asking Hatton's or Gaugemaster even some one on youtube may know the answer or Legomanbifo. I have subbed to you, you could be one of my subs not sure. Hope this helps. Mick

Hi Peter, I have been thinking about the symptoms of poor running by your class 66 motors. What would be interesting would be to remove the motor from the loco and the decoder as well. Run these as a unit being driven by your DCC controller. Vary the motor speed and see if the problem of rough running occurs again. By running outside the loco you have eliminated gearing and pick-up problems. If rough running occurs under these circumstances the problem may well be the interaction between the motor and the DCC controller, is the pulse width from the controller well matched to the motor for example? Perhaps by changing the pulse width the problem may well disappear. I would also be a bit suspicious of the capacitors connected across the brushes of the motor and I don't see why they should cause any less problem than with a pure DC system. Their function is the same ie., to remove the square edges of the motor input current to stop radio interference. The fact that the problem has occurred with so many motors does make me very suspicious that the problem may lie elsewhere. The common factor each time is the source of control. Thanks for your video on the matter; very interesting indeed, Tony

Hi Tony, I think I say in the video I had the problems across two controllers, also I swapped the processors around and the problem stayed with the loco, as of this moment, I'm pleased to say, all of my fleet are running well. I have kept the motors and the other day, I ran just the motor under DC and it runs well. There were small sparks coming from just one brush one side of the commutator. Maybe I should try cleaning it? Thanks for the ideas not sure I have enough skill to attempt more testing, just happy alls running well and I'm busy playing trains :) All the best Tony

F2 is momentary due to it being the default Horn channel on DCC Sound Decoders. I function mapped any functions that were on this. When I've sent locomotives to Bachmann to be fixed, they just swap any coaches/locos for one that works, ie. when I sent my class 350 back they just swapped a coach with one they already had When I sent a loco to Hornby it came back with wheels so dirty they were fully black, and the motor gearing clogged up with track pins from their test layout Bachmann do have dodgy batches of locos- there was a dodgy batch of 350s where the lights blew after a bit My 350 is jerky at slow speed although that may just be normal... About half of my trains run the worst a mid-speed... this was only on DCC not DC

Not having seen the loco's running with the original issues you mentioned, but you said they had jerky motors. Are you sure it's the motors and not something associated with the gear trains in the bogies. I've had similar with my US outline stuff I bought second hand, and it turned out to be caused by dry gears or something hanging into the gearing. You haven't accidentaly trapped any wires while working on the locos have you. Just thinking out loud. Regards Dave.

Hi Dave, thing is, now that the motors are changed, and everything else is as was, they are now running fine. The problem happened at mid range on the speed both running up and running down, so that ruled out gear train etc.. At the time with the decoder I swapped out with a standard one and the trouble stayed with the loco, which is why I went down motor route. Thanks for watching Take care Peter

I am disappointed with Bachmann’s and Hornby’s responses to your problems. They’re really not taking you seriously, and they should because (a) you’re a customer, and (b) your excellent KZfaq channel is telling many hundreds more people that Hornby & Bachmann will give you very poor support. They will lose money because of their poor support. We just need to act with our wallets and go elsewhere. (Peter, hint, you need to act with your wallet and go elsewhere!). Keep up the good work.
