Not to be a smart ass or anything, but for anyone who’s curious: Deaf people speak in a wide variety of manners which often reflect things like if they were once able to hear or if they’ve been through training to speak and articulate clearly. While some deaf people speak in a manner very different from hearing people, others can be completely indistinguishable.
@PhoenixIsGray3 жыл бұрын
I have a question about that though. Is there a reason why some deaf people have a harder time with making clear sounds? Is it possible for like their vocal cords to not be fully developed due to not speaking??

@@PhoenixIsGray We learn how to speak by listening to people. Deaf people can't hear so they have to make sounds without knowing what they sound like. For people who can hear (like me and lots of other people) this is so common and ordinary that we don't even think about it. There is nothing wrong with deaf people's vocal cords. I think you can teach those sounds. They're plosives so you can put your hand in front of your mouth when making them, to prove that a puff of air should be felt. You can also see the middle of the tongue hit the soft palate if you tilted you head up when making it. So once with hand in front of the mouth, the other time facing up. I'm studying linguistics and we had to get accustomed to interpreting sound from other people to transcribe properly. Idk what speech therapists do though, if there are speech difficulties concerning g/k.

Maybe this would be a good tip for her.

Sorry to blow up your comment with a longer comment, but this is a subject I know something about :) (although I do take correction, as I am by no means an expert) Deaf people can learn to speak in several ways, usually at a school for the deaf, where they will also usually be introduced to deaf culture. Children can go deaf at any age, so some go deaf after having learned to speak, or having learned a little about talking. They can also lose some or all of their hearing. Children who learn to speak well usually have some hearing left and/or remember learning to speak at least a little. Children who went completely deaf at a very young age so not usually learn perfect speech, and to attempt to teach them can take them away from very important academics, like math or science. It is a personal decision between the patent, child, and school. Historically, hearing people have made schools fort the deaf that forced then to speak and did not let them use sign language, which was very hard. It's a bitter memory for the Deaf. Schools with similar philosophies still exist. Also, sconce most deaf children are born to hearing people, many parents just raise their child to make the kid more like a hearing kid, even if it's the wrong choice for them. So my hypothesis is that this young lady already speaks about as well as she plans to and has probably heard that tip. You're great. Sorry again for the long post.
@Junakase3 жыл бұрын
@@dawn8293 Thanks for the insight. I knew that there are schools for blind people, where they can learn to read the writing for them with their fingers. So it makes sense that there are also schools for deaf people. I just had a look, and we do actually have them here as well. The nature of these schools probably depends on the country they're in and the local culture. If it's a school in the US where they are rather conservative, I can imagine it being as you described. I also found the person again I was talking about. Her parents are both deaf as well, so they could read the signs when she was losing her hearing and couldn't learn how to speak properly. And it was actually her grandmother who then decided to start teaching her at a very young age when she had some of her hearing left, using the method I mentioned in my comment. Of course, the decision whether to invest the time needed to learn how to speak is up to each person themselves.

I love your sister. My older sister is deaf, and this reminds me of the goofy stuff we used to do when we were younger. I can tell your sister has a dope sense of humor

I have such a customer. Her niece is with her to translate. It's sad but when I see her smile I really admire her strength. God bless all
