Here's how I ensure that I have very few B team clothes and virtually no C team clothes in my wardrobe: I rotate my clothes. For instance, in my closet, my shirts are hung up on the rack, and when I get dressed, I get the first shirt on one end of the rack to wear (what I think of as the front end). When it's time to return the shirt to the closet, I hang it at the other end of the rack (the back end). This just rotates all my shirts forward so that I wear them all with roughly equal regularity. I do allow myself to skip an item if, say, it's too casual for what I'm doing that day or I'm just not feeling the style that day. But I leave it at the front of the line, and if it has stayed there for a week or so constantly getting skipped, then I know that I don't actually like that item anymore and I get rid of it during my next purge. I do this with my T-shirts, my underwear, everything. Just line things up in their storage places and rotate them as you wear them. You'll quickly find out which items you keep avoiding.

I love this idea! Thanks for the tip. I have gotten rid of so many clothes, especially the last time I moved about 5 months ago. It was an emergency move, and I only had 3 days to vacate and find another place to live, so needless to say it really lit a fire under me to quickly decide what to keep, and what to let go. Even so, I know I still have some items that I rarely/never wear, so hopefully using your suggested tactic will help me to realize which items really need to go, and are literally "taking up space".

This is what I do too! I rotate all my work shirts. I have like 2.5 weeks/12 shirts and those that I tend not to wear are those that are already old. This method also ‘dictates’ when I need to buy clothes - that is when I have to get rid of an item. For my non-work clothes, I usually wear just few pieces over and over (after washing them ofc). I don’t get rid of the others, I keep them to use when the clothes I usually wear are worn/irrepairable. I haven’t bought non-work clothes for a long time now and I don’t really care about styles or trends.

Oddly enough, the process I went through to "make sure every clothing item I own is a winner" was completely swapping my own wardrobe with a friend's hand-me-downs. I've learned that I SUCK at shopping for clothes. I've never really felt like "me" or confident in much clothing that I bought myself. So, when a friend I consider stylish was de-cluttering her closet and asked if I wanted to come by and take some of the things she was getting rid of, I gladly accepted. I ended up taking so much (including a pair of $300 jeans that I LOVE and that fit me SO well but would never buy myself due to the price). Since then, she had me take clothes from three separate de-cluttering sessions, and now 90% of my wardrobe are her hand-me-downs. I now love my wardrobe and I was so lucky to be able to completely re-vamp my wardrobe for free! (we even found out we were the same bra and shoe size so I got some free bras and a great pair of boots as well). This whole experience taught me what type of clothes I actually love and taught me how to shop for myself.

At one point in my mid 20s I instituted a rule for myself: dress each day so that you won't be embarrassed if someone important pops their head in my office, or if I forgot about a meeting I have to attend. It's become a general guide in dressing professionally enough that I don't have to think too much about what I wear in the morning, because I now know which clothes make me feel good and look good while at my job.

Thank you for pointing out that being taken seriously despite what you wear is a privilege! I've been in occasions where someone would dress sloppily I cannot help but wondering if they actually have enough respect of those they are meeting, but they could get away with it anyway because they're one of the most important persons in the room. On another note, while not wanting to be overdressed is understandable, I think making yourself presentable (such as wearing clean, decent-looking clothes, being well-groomed, looking and smelling fresh) is a form of self-respect.

When I go through my closet I keep a white board full of "excuses/reasons I don't wear this" there were so many clothes I kept onto because I felt like I owed it to them to wear it, but in reality I always found an excuse not to. So I started documenting why I don't: ie too long, too see through, clings in the wrong place, etc. Then I keep that list in my phone so that when I go shopping for A team clothes, I look for any of those flaws that would result in me not wearing. Doing this definitely showed me which silhouettes and fabrics I should avoid altogether and has helped me only have clothing I absolutely love to wear.

I did something similar: I analyzed why I didn’t wear certain things and made a Don’t Buy list. It includes things like synthetic materials, 3/4-sleeves and tunic tops, and when I’m otherwise tempted by something “almost”, but with these features, I look at this list and remind myself that I never liked them.🙂

I had a phase of cross dressing a few years ago (I'm a dude), and I learned a lot from it. I absolutely do not regret it, and made me realize things about clothes. We often take it too seriously:"I need to look like this; I want the world to think of me like that; I'm not good enough for this piece of clothing; that clothing isn't good enough for me; I might wear this someday; I love it but it doesn't fit; I jsut have so many feels about this piece". And on and on it goes. Gender and sexuality, which clothing is definitely related to, are topics that our entire species as a whole is debacling and facing right now. These discussions could go on forever. It's best to really just simplify it down and let go. Do you love it? Does it fit you well? Is it good quality? Are you willing to maintain it with proper care? Does it fit your personal style, regardless of trends? No to any of these questions? THEN TOSS IT! Life is too short to be putting more of our energy into our wardrobes rather than into our relationships and communities. I know that journey is a difficult one. But trust me, it is worth the effort..you just got to keep going is all. Proud o' y'all!!

I go through all my clothes like this about once a year, and I've accepted that my style evolves over time. I used to shop almost exclusively fast fashion, now most of my clothing is thrifted and I pay much closer attention to material, fit and quality. Trends rotate almost faster than they can be followed, but your sense of style and clothing that makes you feel good is what lasts.

I go through my clothing every few years. One of the challenges for me is my variation in sizing. I haven't been consistent for a few years. This got me started wearing dresses. They always make you look more put together and many styles can be forgiving on weight fluctuations +-20lbs. I want to go through my closet again now. I love the idea of someone assisting you in selling your clothes. Some money is better than none!

I sent all my clothes I didn't like to Thred Up, yes they take some of the profit depending on the worth of the item, but I found it better than the clothes just sitting in a pile in my home for months. (Plus they give you a bag to load up all your stuff, and they pay for the shipping). :)

Absolutely - as someone who keeps non-traditional hair colors, I find the "how can you be expected to be taken seriously as a professional" comment that I often hear here awfully narrow-minded. I fail to see why blue hair should be an indicator of my level of professionalism as it relates to my skills and work ethic. Thankfully, though I've worked in banking, financial services, and corporate retail, I've never been denied opportunities because of it, except once and really, that feeling was mutual. All in all, I feel like there's a bit of gate-keeping here when it comes to who gets to say who is a professional and an "adult". I think it's cool however Chelsea wants to define those things for herself and fulfill those definitions, but wonder if that means if someone wanted to collaborate with/work for her who didn't have the same "conservative sense of style" despite being perfect for the opportunity, they would be so handily dismissed as "not professional"

I went to live abroad for a year for work and only brought my A-team clothes due to lack of space in my suitcase. It was so much easier to get dressed even though I only had a small portion of my wardrobe with me! When I moved back to the US and started unpacking a lot of the clothes I had had in storage, I realized how I had completely forgotten about a lot of them. This summer, I went through my whole wardrobe and considered each piece. I thought about how it functioned as part of my wardrobe, how versatile it was, how comfortable I was in it, how professional or chic I felt in it, and whether it was really my style. For anything I wasn't sure about, I imagined having the opportunity to "delete" it from my wardrobe guilt-free. If that was really appealing to me, out it went. No need to hang on to something I wished I could get rid of. Now I'm trying to fill in those missing gaps (work pants!) and also finding that some of the things I kept could also still go. But I've also found I'm not as tempted to shop any more because I consider how each new piece fits into my overall wardrobe and aesthetic. It's also not very environmental to buy just to buy. I'm also trying to invest in some pieces so I don't have to replace them all time. Any recommendations for basics like t-shirts?

Another tip is to have some cash saved before you declutter, because if you pare down your wardrobe to only items you love, you may end up with gaps that need filling with new items. I learnt this the hard way after 'Marie Kondo-ing' my wardrobe while unemployed and broke!

I love how you say every item is a winner because I always thought I was super fussy with clothes so went through a phase of buying whatever was in fashion. I now realise it’s actually a good thing to be fussy and I only ever buy something when I “fall in love” with it and it earns its place in my wardrobe (eg I can think of at least 3 things it goes with and 3 occasions I would wear it to) :)

I declutter in steps. Meaning, I throw out the D-Team first, then wait a few months till I think: "Hey, there's still a few items I can let go." There goes the C-Team and so on. Especially with my vast collection of books that really helps. You kind of learn to see what works for you and get security that you really won't regret giving stuff away... If you're unsure it's a great way to get started.

I love shopping in general, and i used to always buy craploads of clothes. A couple things recently changed the way i buy clothes. 1. i got a sewing machine. my mom sewed a bunch of clothes for me when i was little. being the crafty person i am, i decided i wanted my own machine. i got one from my mom for christmas and since then have made a bunch of clothes from fabrics and in styles i love (along with plenty of duds). i learned what makes a piece quality and what to watch out for when buying clothing because i know how difficult some things are and how much time they take to make right. 2. i read some books. Specifically "Overdressed" and 'Life changing Magic of Tidying Up". most pople have heard of Marie Kondo by now, but the books is lightyears more useful than any summary articles or her tv show. overdressed gives the facts surrounding the clothing industry that make you rethink buying those 5 tops for $5. 3. i completed the 30 for 30 challenge. This is a challenge where you tuck away all but 30 pieces of clothing TOTAL (shoes, tops, jackets, pants, bags) and only wear those 30 items for 30 days. It forced me to think carefully about my wardrobe and pick items that all go together and look great. it showed me that i really dont need a bunch of stuff to have a bunch of outfits, and i got rid of a crapload of clothes immediately after completing it. i told myself "anything you havent missed once during these 30 days (weather-specifics like big coats and sweaters excluded) you are giving away to someone who really wants it". After these three things, I take time deciding what i want in my closet. I make something if i want a very specific items in a fabric i find, i buy fair trade clothing from companies that help take care of the earth, and i make sure to keep only what i need and love in my closet. I am far from minimalist, but clothing should always live where it is loved.

I did this a few years ago and I have the opposite problem sometimes where I get rid of too much and have to replace. But I try to keep a lot of items that can be dressed up or down and a few nicer tops and couple nicer bottoms and have kept a good capsule wardrobe over time. People just want to “get rid” of their stuff without taking the time to see what is still good, find staple items and build their wardrobe with the style and colors they truly love. No this isn’t a one size fits all plan of action but just what helped me ☺️

I followed the Marie Kondo method of decluttering after watching the Netflix show and reading her first book. It really worked life-changing magic for me, and my house is sooo much tidier and easier to clean now. There were parts in the journey that were emotional, but there's basically nothing that I got rid of that I've regretted for more than a moment since-- which surprised me. Generally the journey has made me more aware of what brings me joy, what I value, and I feel lighter knowing that I don't need to lug around the past with me. It's honestly led me on the path of wanting to be more fiscally responsible which has brought me to your channel. As general advice from my journey -- Sentimental items are the hardest, obviously, and I am still working through them (or have put them aside for now). But it absolutely wowed me how much of my stuff actually sparked no emotion or had no purpose really. Some items even made me feel negatively. I think let your heart be your guide on this one.. and absolutely don't get rid of items that you love, even if you can't rationally justify them. If you love it, it serves a purpose. -- do think about displaying it or giving it a place of honor though.

I read that when it first came out and the biggest change it made to my life was how I shop. I’ll ask myself “do I really need this? Do I really want this?” and not just shopping for clothes-at the grocery store. So I spend far less and bring far less into the house, which is the best way to manage clutter: can’t have clutter if you never accumulate it in the first place

@@annaswanson5903 Definitely. The objects that have been hardest for me are the controversial ones -- Ones that doesn't necessarily bring me joy, but feel oh so much worse when I think to get rid of them. Luckily for me, these objects are few and far between and don't take up much space, so I feel ok about putting them in a box and keeping them for now. Maybe someday I will feel differently about them, or will find the courage to finally dispense with them.

I encourage you to go for it as soon as you can. It feels liberating. I did this as the kon mari method last year because I was moving out of my previous home and it made my luggage minimal for moving out and I feel and look good. I never second guess what I wear. Ultimately you know what you want in your life and the end goal you should always consider is "will this support who I want to become and is it comfortable". If you want to consider a minimal wardrobe keep it in mind when you are sorting, if you want to be more mature in taste of clothing then you choose things that flatter you, if you want to express yourself with tee shirts then do so. An elaboration for this is things like graphic tees. Yes they may be your go to, but if your goal is to be more mature and adult like it might be better to let them go because it doesn't support your end goal. However a key suggestion is to never demote clothing to pjs. It physically feels nicer to have it for specific intended use. Also pj clothing cant be worn out so you encourage yourself to not be lazy and actually wash clothes which can make it a routine if you don't have one yet

Paring down my wardrobe was my first step to becoming a minimalist! I watched Jennifer L Scott’s ted talk on 10 item wardrobe. Super inspiring! I have a very small wardrobe now and absolutely love it. Like you said, I love and feel good in every item. I was also able to give away my dresser and store all my clothes and shoes in my closet and nightstand. I also put away my clothes every time I’m done wearing them instead of throwing them on a chair. My room feels peaceful now.

Great video, thanks! I did a serious decluttering a couple of years ago I try to buy only "A" items that work in various ways in the closet, work and play. I only have a certain number of hangers to hang items. Once I hit that max then I know there is a problem, that is why it is so important to have clothes that do double duty. I had to also get comfortable in my style and learn to wear things differently (this is still a learning opportunity) to be more creative, not get bored and think I need more....

I started decluttering my wardrobe (followed by everything else I owned) a year and a half ago after I moved and saw all of my clothes in a pile on my bed. In that process, I watched TONS of KZfaq decluttering videos, and I ended up reading Marie Kondo’s book, which I found helpful in dealing with all of the emotional and mental attachments I’d formed with the things I didn’t really want. All that being said, I really really enjoyed your take on this! You always seem to have a unique take or perspective on whatever you make videos about, and I’ve found it really helpful. Decluttering helped me reevaluate my relationship with my things, what I want out of an apartment, and what my style is. The biggest thing it lead to was me critically thinking about the clothes and other items I purchased, and the degree to which I want to participate in consumerist culture. I just stared a “low-buy” year, and I’m excited to see how not buying clothes and other non essentials changes my impulses.

But 40% it's thrifted, 50% it's clothes my grandma gave me, and 10% it's stuff I bought bran new... The thing is, some doesn't fit me since I had my daughter, and I refuse to let go because I really want to have my body back and wear them again... But it's been two years !!! My other problem is that I'm learning to make my own clothes so I do need to make space for that. So yeah, you inspired me, but I need to make some other changes aswell

The problem is when I declutter I always get rid of things that ends up being the very thing I needed the next year. I did this with a velvet blazer. I hadn’t worn it in a couple of years, gave it away. Then last winter I had several occasions where this blazer would have been perfect. I also couldn’t find one to replace it. So I’m very hesitant to get rid of things. Instead I work on n buying less.

I understand the frustration, I've felt it a couple of times - like dang, the thing I decluttered last year I could've worn now! But just because I feel this sometimes, doesn't mean I want to stop decluttering. I will usually find another piece of clothing that will fit whatever I need. And at the end of the day, it's just clothes. I won't let it ruin my day, and I don't want it to ruin my journey to a more sustainable lifestyle with a curated wardrobe :) I don't know if this helps, just thought I'd share my perspective.

I didn't go through all the steps outlined here but before I had finished watching I had a large shopping bag full of clothes that I'll give to a friend or donate. Thanks so much for the encouragement. I gathered up all my clothes that don't fit quite right (I have narrow shoulders and I find a lot of dresses hang off me even if I love them and buy them anyway). I also gathered up skirts and dresses i don't wear because I feel they're a bit too short for my liking. Finally, any t shirts or clothes that I just don't really wear or love when I wear went in the bag also. All up I collected around 20 pieces. This is about the 5th time I've done this this year and have bought hardly any clothes to replace what I give away. I'll try again in a month or so to declutter even more. I just don't have a whole day today to pile everything up on my bed.

I just cleaned out my closet (4 bags to the thrift store, 2 in the bin, 1 to a friend) and the tactic I used was asking myself when the last time I wore something was. If I hadn't worn it all winter or all last summer, it was out. I also got rid of everything that didn't fit me - it wasn't worth keeping around to shame me for not losing weight. I also know that now that I buy most of my clothes second hand, if I find I really need something, it's not going to cost the world to get it, which made me feel less guilty for throwing this out - I could avoid the sunk cost fallacy.

I pared down my wardrobe significantly before going to grad school overseas, going through my stuff and asking if I cared about it enough to either replace something in my luggage or pay to have more space was a good test. I started by looking at what I really wore and it turned out I stumbled into a uniform of sorts. Some people think it's boring that easily 80% of my wardrobe is duplicates, but I like it. The way you're talking about only having things that matter to you is exactly how I approach minimalism. And as a New Yorker where you get actual summers and winters you probably have some kind of simplified capsule wardrobe system already, all it means is having seasonal clothes separated.

I got rid of SO MUCH STUFF that I was holding onto either because it had sentimental value, it didn't fit right, or like you said, it was a bolder item that looked awesome on the rack but I wasn't really comfortable in. I don't know if I got 75%, but I bet I let go of half my closet. It was such a relief and it taught me a lot about what I really want out of my clothes. Now I'm feeling inspired to go through my closet again, since it's been awhile since I last decluttered.
