Good video actually talking about the books. I'm getting back into drawing (perspective & figure) after a long hiatus (took classes that covered perspective/still life/portraits years ago). Most of these books are on my to-buy list, but curious if you had a recommended order to read these without price in mind? Hampton & Framed Perspective first maybe?

Another good drawing book that I would suggest would be Dynamic Bible by Peter Han. If possible try to take his course from his own website or from CGMA. Highly recommended if you want to master the free form drawing . From hard surface to organic, best skill you can pick up as an artist. One of the main fundamentals behind the Dynamic Sketching Philosophy is to break down any object through an action line (gesture, trust me gesture drawing can be used for other objects as well not only for Humans) then try to build up from simple shapes.

I have almost all of these! All of them except stonehouse, the figure & pose book, lezhin and morpho. The Michael Hampton book was my first one too. Right now I'm study from the Andrew Loomis books. Do you have those? They're phenomenal.

A good first perspective book is Perspective Made Easy. By the way, nice, you have the expanded Animator's Survival Kit. I do too. Got mine accidentally basically when I ordered The Animator's Survival Kit. At the time I didn't know an expanded edition existed. I have the How to Draw book, the Lezhin books, The Micheal Hampton book. I have two Framed books, but not Framed Perspective. I have Framed Ink 1 and 2. I honestly have a bit too many books on anatomy. So I really just need to get through them before I consider anything else.

I started reading perspective made easy but I don’t know how to use it to practise. There are no excersises to follow along with. I tried copying the illustrations that it has on each page but as a complete beginner it is very hard for me to do it correctly

Hey iam new to Art like cant draw a stick figure type new, a friend of mine gifted me the Taco Anatomy book which is really nice of him obviously, but i dont know how to learn from it. Do i just try my best at straight up copying each picture in the book or what am i supposed to do with it?
@TheTimothyBowen
@TheTimothyBowen 8 ай бұрын
Yup! Copy Copy Copy Copy! Believe it or not, that is the best way to Learn how to draw something from memory Copy it from observation! Some artist will tell you copying is bad. DONT LISTEN TO THEM! The more you Copy the more you can draw from your head! So draw all the pages from the Taco Book! Keep copying them, and then try to draw them from memory! That is the best way! I'll be making a video on this soon!

Read the Stonehouse book and would definitely recommend it as he goes WAY more in depth than other artist anatomy books and makes it a lot more fun. The way he explains things and how he encapsulates that explanation within a little comedic drawing makes it bearable to stick around for the long haul. As for the racism and misogyny alligations, respectfully but those people are looking to get offended.

How does one begin with Hampton's book before learning perspective, form drawing and proper pen control? I own this book but feels too advanced for me.

DrawABox is a good Starting point with just learning pen control leading into perspective! It's completely free! I did that before jumping into Michael Hampton's book :)

Not for beginners, only if you had to get 2 books I feel those books are all you need. If you asked me which book should you get as a beginner when it comes to learning perspective, how to draw or Framed perspective. Framed perspective as it doesn't feel too Text bookea compared to How to draw.
@saprissa9

You're right. I just wanted to clarify it for beginners. I got How to draw and Michael Hampton's book on figure drawing. I've seen people pushing those books, and them books are not for beginners. I need to get framed perspective, though. I have a hard time drawing circles and ovals in perspective.

I've read Stonehouse's Anatomy and I can see why some people would think he's somewhat a racist since there was some controversy because people claimed the book has elements of sexism, misogyny, racism, bigotry, and generalization. In his descriptions of the appearance of woman vs man characters / even when he was talking about the cranium he used a diagram of a gorilla who turns into a darker skin man who then becomes a light skin man stereotypical. Overall the book is useful but has a lot of stereotypes.
