Hey everyone, I'm back! About a week ago I managed to luck out and pick up one of the best project garden tractors I could ever hope to have: a Honda 4518. I have a long history with Honda garden tractors going back to the very first one that I rode, my Grandpa's 4514, when I was a little spud of four or five. At one point I did on a Honda 4518 that was in beautiful condition, but I sold it just because I felt it wasn't practical at the time. Now that I'm older and not trying to save my way through school, I can say to hell with practicality and take on this one as a project. I got it for a good price upfront, the parts pricing and availability is reasonable, and the end result will be the pleasure of working on a garden tractor I love instead of just fixing another garden tractor up for sale. I'll do whatever I can to take you guys on this journey with me.

Those Honda's are such a unique tractor. The inline twin liquid cooled engine is a neat concept for a machine this size - I've never operated one but I'd be curious to see how it compares to the more traditional liquid-cooled V-twin. A buff and wax job would do wonders on that paint, can't wait to see what it looks like when you're done with it. Looks like you've got a good project on your hands! And I agree with the whole part about not focusing on the cost and just owning the machine to have fun with it. I've stopped buying garden tractors recently, but mostly just because I've got farm tractors now that need my time and attention. At the end of the day, it's for the enjoyment factor and not the money.

I did a double take when i looked at the thumbnail because your 4518 looks alot like my 4514 mine even has the same kinks in the grill bars lol. I love those little hondas, they're so well built. Good to see a video from you and I'll be on the look out for more videos of the 4518.

Hahaha, pretty much every single one I’ve seen has some sort of grille damage. Even my grandpa’s got damaged by me running over a tree when I was small. Glad to see you’re still watching man :)

Just acquired one of these with the 46” deck, debating whether to keep (got in lieu of money owed to me). Sure runs smooth and quiet!

So we just got one of these. 38 in deck. Everythung is identical except the engine itself. Ours has carb on right side with an airbox that lays over the top of the engine. Plugs on the left side. It sat for at least 10 years maybe 15. I put new plugs in it, draine the deck varnish out of the tank and replaced it with fresh gas. Ive got it to finally fire and run. But it will only run with the choke on and it feels like the engine is onky running on one cylinder and its barely running on that. Its not running enough to engage the PTO. It just falls on its face and dies. Curious if my issues sound familiar? 😂 i need this thing to cut grass asap. 😂😂

Completely rebuild the carburetor and replace the spark plugs. That should get you on your feet. Yours is a 4514, with the smaller GX360K1 engine.

Rory it’s great to see you still doing tractor stuff, I’ll be looking forward to all the updates on this Honda for sure! It makes me miss that 3813 I had many moons ago, like you said over engineered but dam well worth it, mine too also had grill damage for the previous owner but I “fixed it” lol

I would love to own a 3813 sometime. The fact that they had an actual clutch assembly built in was so impressive. Weren’t they shift on the fly?
@RooneysSears01
@RooneysSears01 2 жыл бұрын
@@lobsterbox20 it sure was, all you had to do was clutch it into a forward gear then you could shift up or down from there, kinda like an automatic clutch very cool

@@RooneysSears01 That’s incredible. All that trouble to make a true clutch based shift on the fly mechanism when hydrostatic transmissions had around for decades. That’s kind of the wonder of these tractors - so much over-engineering, but not in ways that made them outright more powerful or fully featured than contemporary garden tractors.

The 4518 is nice, I've heard it could come with a 46-inch deck supposedly as the biggest deck they made in the lineup. I personally own a 4013 and just recently got a 4514 and love them both. I played hell finding parts for the 4013 but man now that its done it cuts way better than any other mower, the 38-inch mower deck is legendary in its suction ability and cut quality. Also FYI the 4013 is different from the 4514 and 4518 in the respect that its gear drive and has a 13 hp vertical shaft engine rather than a horizontal shift direct-drive hydro.

@@lobsterbox20 nice how was it compared to the 42 in deck? MY 4514 has the 42in deck with the power bagger attachment and it's great for grass but I noticed for leaf clean up it tends to blow a lot out under the deck from all the airflow. But then again that could be operator error since your supposed to have the deck as low as possible to the ground for suction. These tractors work great with a cyclone rake attached to them in the fall for leaf clean-up. I also have two detailed videos on my channel comparing my two hondas and also an in-depth rebuild of the clutch mechanism on my 4013.
