Thank you, so much. Wish I could spend more time in it - I might need to get a gardener too soon! Working all over the country means I'm rarely home other than some weekends and, as you can appreciate, there's so much more to do - including YT! ha! But I really appreciate it - this is where I later constructed the woodland border and I really need to do an update on that. Considering making the pond larger at some point (!) this year and will of course document everything. Hope you're having a good weekend - best wishes, Joel

If only more young people were like you Joel incredible garden. I'm 57 so lot older than you but I've always loved wildlife. I got foxgloves centaurea verbena bonariensis knapweed cowslips..most of your favourites. My pond has cuckoo flower growing in it & it's full of tadpoles. I'll just say I feed the hedgehogs every night & have been thrilled by the goldfinches feeding on my sunflower hearts. They're such gorgeous birds. I love your videos mate keep up the great work

Thank you Stephen, so very much. You're not that much older ;) They are indeed all my favourites, and it's so good to know that others are already making such vital habitats and providing food sources for creatures so very much in need right now - I'll be sure to do an update when the meadow is in flower and the other plants are at their best - the thing is I've not managed to spend much time in my own garden at all but it proves that these gardens are a lot less work and provide at least 3 times the enjoyment with the visitors they bring :) Best wishes to you and yours - and thank you again for all the support, it means a lot - Joel

I have a pesky squirrel who visits my garden, but it can't get any birds eggs as the boxes are protected by wire baskets. The squirrel doesn't go hungry as he has access to plenty peanuts 👍
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 3 жыл бұрын
Fantastic idea - my rather peeved other half was looking into rigid wire to put across/around the boxes so that the birds can get in but the squirrel can't, or is at least thwarted in his efforts! Mine has plenty of peanuts and other foods, he usually helps himself to the seed in the feeders, destroying several feeders in the process, ensuring we purchased only metal ones but it doesn't stop him having a go! Great idea re the wire baskets though - many thanks Pat - best wishes, Joel

Thank you James - really appreciate your kind words and yes, totally agree that vast acres are not needed, it's the small suburban gardens that we need to concentrate on to provide vital habitat now - so much has been lost and the "need" for minimalist barren gardens with the astro-turf, wall to wall paving etc seems to remain fashionable - it's one of the reasons I try harder :) Best wishes, and thanks again - Joel

It's so funny to hear you saying you've built nest boxes for starlings and house sparrows that are declining, because here (in NYC) they're both enormously abundant and invasive! We're advised specifically not to build boxes that are accessible to starlings.

Enspiring. Our garden still needs to get a little wilder due to the neighbour removing so much on their boarder side. So much ivy was lost, but it’s getting there. You’ve given me some great ideas Joel. I especially liked that your canopy doesn’t mean that a meadow can’t be developed. In fact your meadow and pond have really given me some ideas to work towards. I love it. I’m thinking that my garden is still a little too formal. 🤔 my brain is buzzing now. 😄

Hello! Sorry for delay Tracey, rather packed weekend so am just catching up now - wish it'd been a packed weekend involving my own garden ;) Be as informal as you wish... half the time I think I increase the habitat in my own to balance out the lack of habitat in the surrounding gardens - it's your garden after all and I am sure you don't preach to your neighbours about how they manage theirs - keep it up, your garden is already such a vital habitat for so many creatures :) Best wishes, as always - Joel

You have a lovely garden! I love it! It's also wonderful to hear about House Sparrows and Starlings where they belong. Its sad to hear about their decline there, since they are a pest and major invasive species here in the United States (they bully and kill many of the native birds here, especially the Eastern Bluebirds). I love their songs, but they keep a lot of my more desirable native birds from my gardens and birdfeeders (I get flocks of dozens of House Sparrows and Starlings at a time). Keep up the wonderful work!
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton

Hi there :) I didn't know that about the Starlings being so invasive in the USA, they are described here by the word "raucous" when they turn up at feeders, although we see less and less each year, sorry if we made them head your way due to lack of thought this side! ;) Thank you for your support, it really is appreciated - best wishes to you - Joel

Lovely stuff Joel..I've done lots of projects (wildflower meadows, woodland regeneration etc) over the years in my garden and beyond but there is always new stuff to learn..amazed how you remember all the plants !! Just re nestboxes, I have had the open front type boxes used by Robins, Wrens, Blackbirds etc and all been raided by squirrels, crows or Great Spotted Woodpeckers over the years...my really strong recommendation is that they have to be incredibly well hidden in deep cover when put up to have a chance. I have found also putting the box sideways on against a fence or wall (still only in hidden spots) rather than with the entrance facing straight out, really helps success rate. The birds love to land someway away and make their way through the cover to the nestbox so predators have less chance of spotting the nest location. My other recommendation for anyone who's garden has no thick cover, is putting them in a busy location. So near a door on your house, in a garage or a workshop that has permanent access for them for them of course etc as the predators often are not brave enough to go there. Great channel ...everything here in Kent two weeks behind but bursting into life now !!
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton

Hi Nigel, sorry for the delay - working all weekend but just catching up now - absolutely agree with everything you've said - the Robin box was moved from behind the buddleja once it had been raided and I placed it against the Jasmine, it's seen better days to be honest, not that Robins are that fussy ;) The blackbirds I couldn't help unfortunately, I did hope that the rose establishing would have thwarted the squirrel somewhat, but alas no. Definitely considering some sturdy chicken wire shaped around the remaining boxes to allow the birds in but to attempt to prevent further damage by magpies, jays and even woodpeckers of course. Everything here is the same, about two weeks behind as well, I'm just across the water from you, about an hour from Dartford bridge/tunnel - thanks so much for your kind comments, really appreciated! Hi there :) I hope you do too, it's the easiest way to garden and the best way to make a difference to wildlife local to you - even a pot for pollinators (I'll be making some videos on those shortly) will help a hungry bee that urgently needs that energy to find other sources :) Best wishes, Joel

You are so welcome Jerry, I wish I could spend more time out there but if I'm going to make as many habitats as possible I need to move around the whole country - one of the reasons I set up this channel was to help people achieve this in their own gardens, the book helps in a big way too with the plants lists and instructions etc but knowing so many people have an increased interest because of the videos really does make it all worthwhile - thank you so much for your support, I'll be doing another update in a couple of weeks when the wildflowers should be showing off ;) Best wishes, Joel

Beautiful garden with tons of plants and wildlife😍😍 I love the look of the barrel pond with the flowering pots in the front. I think this would look awesome in my front garden, surrounded by perranials and annuals, native and non-native plants. We have quite a lot of man-made woodlands and ditches surrounding the suburbun area, loved seeing a blue with red eyed dragonfly/nymph perching on my pinky winky hydrangea past summer in the front garden. Defenitly (?) want to start a small wildlife barrel pond because of them❤😍 Now comes the hardest part, waiting for spring to come🌿🌼🦋🐝🐞🌺🌹Only a few months away 🤞🙌

What a beautiful garden. You have set nature set free to complete the design process and she is a sublime. artist. I'm trying for a biodiversity garden down in Cape Town South Africa and you're a real inspiration. Different plants, but similar principles. There are signs of so much work and thought. I've been watching your videos for over two years now. You said your garden was small but it doesn't look it. It's a paradise, and size is irrelevant. As you show, you can walk round the garden for nearly an hour and keep your viewers fascinated. Making room for the rest of creation is true spaciousness. Any sane person would rather have that than an acre of lawn. I so admire the way you've made this into a living, its one way to make continuous rehabilitation sustainable.

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton No problem Joel, to be honest, responses aren’t always necessary 😁 I’m looking forward to the next tour. I made a wildflower meadow last autumn. I just used the quick and easy method by cutting the grass short then raking it to dirt level then sowed a ton of seeds. @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin - thank you so much - it does indeed produce more flowers, but cutting the dead flowers off also does this, it's about space really - my really old buddleja houses a lot of sparrows and with it "leaning" against the pergola it thwarts the sparrow hawk somewhat - he used to crash in to the french doors on a regular basis before the pergola was there! Best thing about buddlejas is they're so tough that any cutting back won't stunt next year's growth, they just keep on coming and are so vital for so many insects, and birds for cover of course :) Thank you so much for your kind comment, it's appreciated and certainly makes a big difference to me - Joel

Very tranquil ! You have a lot of birds nesting in your garden area, they must see this as a haven, do you have much problem from the Magpies? They seem to find every nest in our area and destroy them, there are so many hazards to nesting birds it is a wonder that any on them survive, at least we do not have the Squirrel problem here, we only have the Red Squirrel, and they do not cause any problem, but Magpies are a constant threat, the Redstarts have the answer though, they build their nest deep in the cellar, away from the threat. Stay safe ! Chris B.

Hi Chris! Sorry, rather jam packed weekend. Magpies not so much, squirrels and next doors cats make a bigger impact, attempts to thwart them all are in progress! ;) Grey squirrels way more common down here than Red but red squirrels will also take eggs and chicks unfortunately, but then so do woodpeckers - nature tries to make a balance, even if the greys were introduced by "us" many many years ago, there's always a human hand somewhere in destruction of nature though. I saw my first Redstarts in France, the first one while enjoying a meal outside a restaurant, I recognised the call immediately and there he was atop a chimney, think my lunch went cold that day! ;) Hope you're doing well - Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Things have been bad for the nesting birds here, this week our Blackbirds nest was raided by the Magpie and all chicks taken, and the Redstarts chicks in one nest were all killed and the nest destroyed, I think the male Redstarts will destroy other Redstart nests, so it could have been that, the Redstart nest in the cellar was OK, so some have survived, we had a Peregrine flying around over the house yesterday, so our Collard Doves are staying low! Stay safe! Chris B.

@@453421abcdefg12345 It's pretty devastating isn't it Chris, my other half was rather upset after watching the female blackbird taking such care and making huge efforts to pick all the materials needed to make that nest, we've not seen her of late, just the male singing away in the hope of starting again I guess. Lucky Redstarts in the cellar! We know when the Sparrowhawk is about, shrill warning sounds then complete silence, immediately followed by a sighting of him overhead. Nature huh.... ;) Best wishes, Joel

Love this video. It's the second time I've watched it. We've just built an arch which is about 8 ft tall. I would have loved a honeysuckle scentsation on my arch but it will grow too tall. Would you have any suggestions of a honeysuckle to suit the arch please? I've got a climbing rose and clematis on the other side of it

It's so easy to maintain, if you work with the native plants in your area it should do well - I hope your wish comes true Apurwa :) Best wishes to you - Joel

Ohh you have a Malamute/Shephard x. I have three Shepherds and a chocolate lab. I’m considering a poop digester. Now can only garden in the front as no way to plant anything human consumption in the back yard.

Yep, GSD/Malamute, 1 x GSD/Malinois and 1 x Malinois - quite a handful and in recent videos I explain about additional fencing - they keep me on my toes!

Lovely video. Can I ask you a question Joel, would you remove bindweed, brambles and nettles? All three very good for wildlife but in my garden they are totally taking over and overwhelming everything else.

Have the trees you have in pots on your patio survived ok? I thought trees would need huge pots so I’m hugely inspired by how much you can fit in.
