I am a first year middle school teacher in CA, teaching 8th grade ELA. This video was a treasure trove. We use HMH collections at my school too. I want to fit in the Dear Evan Hansen unit at some point. Thank you for all of your videos! They are making a difference in my career.

The one-pagers are beautiful! I'm going to do one-pagers with my 8th graders after we finish reading about the Civil War in September. Can't wait to see how they turn out! This was so helpful!

I love what you said about not having a singular voice represent one group of people. We start Pre-AP 10 with a unit on identity. I try to pull diverse texts (I teach in a predominantly white area of Arkansas.) Sometimes if my students haven’t heard about a culture, once they read a piece, they assume the experience applies to all. How long do you spent on these short texts?

Hi! I’m from Texas so we have TEKS which are our standards. Would you be able to show how you align your lesson plans with your state standards just so I can visually see your process before even completing the lesson plan? Or does your district provide you with the curriculum aligned already in advance?

This is incredibly helpful. I’m starting my second year but because of some unique circumstances, it feels like the first. Grammar, vocab, and writing instruction are the hardest for me to pin down and feel comfortable with. I’m curious about your one-chunk paragraphs. Without luck, I tried searching for another place where you may have explained these more. Any details you can share?

Stopped the video when you introduced a communist teaching book. Social justice warriors are nothing more than Marxists masquerading as holier than thou communists. Communism only works when the heart and mind is truly good and man today is anything but. Also that is a social studies topic not an English language usage topic. 8th grade English is language usage form and function topic and not for social studies. Read a book and interpret its meaning is a 1st year high school topic. 8th grade children are still learning how to use punctuation and grammar structure. Things may have changed since I was in grammar school (1975) but not that much, I would think.
